The formation of the United National Party (UNP) led alliance, Democratic National Front (DNF), is being further delayed, and as a result, nominating a Presidential candidate has also been postponed, sources said.

United National Front (UNF) leaders, on the night of 13 August, met at the Temple Trees to discuss matters in regard to expediting the formation of the DNF. However, according to a UNF source, the discussion had not led to any concrete agreement.

It is reported that the UNF had paid a great deal of attention to discuss the widespread opinion among UNF leaders regarding not nominating Presidential candidate until the DNF is formed.

The UNF source further said that another discussion will be held on 17 August at the Temple Trees, and the Party expects to arrive at a final decision regarding the formation of the DNF.

Meanwhile, Minister Mano Ganesan said that a Sub Committee was appointed to take a final decision regarding the forming of the new alliance and the committee will meet on 17 August.

The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on forming the new alliance and announcing the alliance’s Presidential candidate are scheduled to take place on the same day, after a final decision is made, he added.

UNP Deputy Leader and Minister Sajith Premadasa had also taken part in the discussion held at the Temple Trees.

The next two rallies of the islandwide series of rallies named ‘Sajith Enawa’ are scheduled to be held in the Matara and Matale Districts. According to State Minister Dilip Wedarachchi, the Southern Province rally will be organised targeting the Matara City, demanding that Premadasa be fielded as the UNP’s Presidential candidate.

  1. Dilrook Says:

    The losers’ alliance.

The last time UNP won a presidential election was in 1988. That is 31 years ago which is more than a generation. UNP’s best chance is Sajith (for a decent defeat).

(However, UNP can turn tables on its election misfortunes by a clever transformation election strategy over the next 3 months which it lacked. Very unlikely.)

  2. Randeniyage Says:

UNP can win, if they field SF and promise to remove 13A and come up with ONE LAW for all policy.

However, with Sajith rampaging like a bull they will end up in Maskade.

  3. Ananda-USA Says:

The UNP can’t win under ANY CIRCUMSTANCES because they have lost the hearts and minds of the Sinhala Voters; to put it simply …. the UNP is NOT TRUSTED by the Sinhala people in particular, and by most citizens in general!

Fence jumping SF is not trusted either, so he cannot rescue the UNP, irrespective of his sterling war-time defence credentials and his recent weak unenthusiastic patriotic bleatings designed to create a way out of his Yamapalanaya dalliance.

OOPS! TOO LITTLE, TOO LATE to jump the FENCE now, Gonseka dear!

  4. Ananda-USA Says:

I am AMAZED at the PUBLIC DISPLAY of ABSOLUTE GREED & INDISCIPLINE in the UNP, and the GRASPING CONTROLLING CHARACTER of its permanent MAXIMUM LEADER Ranil Wikunanasinghe!!

This man wants to keep ALL POWERFUL POSITIONS in his Party, and in any ALLIANCE thereof, SOLELY for himself or be given to a non-threatening STOOGE who can be controlled!

He wants to be the ONLY PARTY LEADER of any substance in the UNP for the rest of his natural life!

If he can’t have it, no o0ne else in the Party should have it either, even if the UNP dies an ignominious death in the elections!

    He wants to be:

    1. Leader of the UNP
    2. Leader of the DNF
    3. Executive Prime Minister
    4. Master of the General Secretary of the DNF who will be his STOOGE
    5. And also…. IMPOSE STRINGENT CONDITIONS on the Presidential Candidate who will answer to him as President!

WOW! A REAL ONE MAN SHOW! And THIS is the Party that claims to protect PARLIAMENTARY DEMOCRACY? SAYS WHO?

If ALL of this is IMPOSED on the DNF and Premadasa the Presidential Candidate will not be the Leader of EITHER the DNF OR the UNP, Premadasa as President will be a an EVEN WEAKER PRESIDENT than Sirisena, hamstrung and checkmated at every turn by Ranil Wikunanasinghe.

If the Younger echlon of the UNP accepts this, there will be NO FUTURE in the UNP/DNF for ANY OF THEM until Ranil Wikunanasinghe dies in office as Party Leader and PM!

FORTUNATELY for the country, the UNP is just rearranging the chairs on the deck of the sinking TITANIC!

We citizens of Sri Lanka will SOON be spared the TREASON & the MACHIAVELLIAN ANTICS of the UNP, when the TSUNAMI of ENRAGED PUBLIC OPINION HITS on ELECTION DAY!
