Letter to the editor: Mahinda still could have won, if only…………………….

Of all the sad words of tongue or pen, the saddest are these, ‘It might have been.”So said John Greenleaf Whittier.

Watching Mahinda Rajapakse leaving, one marvels at the fact that  we have absolutely  no control of what tomorrow holds for us.  One day you are king, and the next day you are nothing. No body. Analyzing the election results one can see he still had a good number of people who wanted him to come back, for reasons we will not know, but the following was not small.

He could have been the President of Srilanka for life if only……………for the following  two facts ( in the order of importance).

All other matters, such as arrogance, greed, nepotism etc. were secondary.

 If only…….

  1.   1. He did not believe in the astrologer. I am pretty sure there would have been many instances the prophecy of this particular  astrologer would have been wrong. How did he miss the simple fact that no one – absolutely no one – can predict the future but God alone knows it?
  2.   2. He treated the minorities better. Why in the world did he target the Muslims to be abused, terrorized  and oppressed is still a dilemma. There are many  theories but none of them makes sense. How come he did not realize that old saying Much more things are sought by prayers than this world dreams of?”  If he wanted to create an uprising of Muslims he chose the most wrongest  person in the world – he not only antagonized the Muslims ( if that is what he wanted) but also antagonized majority of right thinking people, especially the Buddhists who saw the gutter tactics of his choice degrading Buddhism more than Islam.

With all the wealth at his fingertips all he needed to help the Tamils was to spend a bit of it to rehabilitate  them. He could have had all of them en bloc supporting him.

Well, it was not to be.

I like to add some fact more to what you have said:

    1. If he continued to be the President for the balance period of two years and within that period he had changed the whole of the Governing System that was in disarray due to the “mismanagement” and “visible” plundering of state resources by the “vultures” who “infiltrated” into his “inner circle”. These “vultures” even “visibly” plundered the state resources for his election campaign.

    2. If he did not “alienate” the “Intellectuals” and fall a prey to the most “self seeking” group of people, both so called “educated” and equally “uneducated”.

    3. If he did not commit the “Crime” of “Down Grading” the Judiciary to his subordination.

    4. If he gave up his “Ego” both harmful to him and the country that paved the way for “mismanagement of State Resources” in embarking on unwanted and uneconomical ventures that were a “heaven” for criminals of all sorts.

    5. If he was able to “discipline” and effectively and visibly take prompt action against his own colleagues; among whom Minster Mervin silva; Duminda Silva portrayed well. Also that includes some of the Provincial Council higher ups.

    6. If he with the reconstruction of the war torn North and East, initiated a parallel meaningful accelerated programme to address issues in relation to all minority communities, without “dillydallying” by appointing a PSC and adducing failures to its non functioning.

In conclusion, he missed his opportunities by surrendering himself to the “urge”, deceived by “ego”, to go for an election before the conclusion of the balance period of two years, that could have been used to do all of the above and show the country that he is a “LEADER” who can DELIVER. Still he can come out of this failure, provided he is prepared to “Change” himself. Hope he will “meditate” and reflect upon his own failings sincerely to himself.

  2. Nanda Says:

Oh ho mareena is back !

So you listed your two Jihadist Agendas. 1. and 2.

Wait and see. Maithree will remove your Gonibilla suit.

Do not start preaching you dreaded Hatred to maithree. Maithree is just the opposite of Koran. Why did you vote for him ?

  3. Nanda Says:

    Douglas,
Please watch closely what will happen to My3’s younger brother’s case. Whether he preaches what he said.

I agree with you generally. I am optimistic but will be open minded ( except for Ma-Hinda part which is close now).

  4. Lorenzo Says:

Typical BS logic. When did minorities vote for MR? NEVER!

Go tell that to FRENCH people and AUSTRALIAN PEOPLE. They too are now feeling TERRORISM.

  5. Susantha Wijesinghe Says:

DR. MAREENA !!! THE SECOND FACT>>>DIATRIBE, IS ALL ABOUT MUSLIMS AND MUSLIMS ONLY, AND YOU TAKE A SUBTLE SHOT AT BUDDHISTS. YOU TALK OF GUTTER TACTICS. WILL YOU JUST WITHDRAW THAT, WITHOUT MAKING THE HAMMERSMITH HAMPDEN BUBBLE IN ME.

AS LORENZO SAY, TYPICAL STERCUS TAURI LOGIC.

JUST STOP COMING OUT WITH YOUR MUSLIM TALK. PEOPLE KNOW WHO YOU ARE. IN FUTURE IF YOU WANT TO SAY SUCH THINGS, JUST DROP THE “””DR.”””

  6. Ramanie Says:

Don’t hasten to write eulogies for Mr Rajapakse yet! He is not dead- he is not ‘nothing’ either! He is the leader of a very strong opposition! Your racist community voted for a separate administrative unit in the Eastern Province; don’t be too arrogant- you are not ‘there’ yet!

Pres MR lost votes because he was conned into pandering to the Muslim demands and fantacies- remember the promise to send every Muslim to Mecca? That’s one of the things that backfired on him; but, he will be back before you can swing your burka around!

  7. Lorenzo Says:

New defence secretary is BMUD Basnayaka who was CHAMPIKA RANAWAKA’s ministry secretary (appointed by MR then) and a HUGE FAN of Gotabhaya Rajapaksa!

A very wise choice. Need I say more!

I appeal to all PATRIOTS (only) to SHED HATRED and team up together to defend SL. We need UNITY not DIVISION. Togetherness not punishment. We NEED people close to MR and GR too.

  8. Charles Says:

Wrong Dr 52 per cent of Sinhala Buddhists had voted for Mahinda Rajapakse and only 48 percent of Sinhala Buddhists had voted for Maitripala Sirisena. On Sinhala Buddhists votes Mahinda Rajapakse had won. It is the Tamil and Miuslim votes that had given victory to Maithriipala Sirisena. Tamils as Lorenzo says will never vote with the Sinhala as they have their own Agenda. Rauf Hakeem represents Muslims-undependable treacherous.

  9. NAK Says:

This is the result of a large amount of foreign funds and as always money talks. People should never ever forget that. Once the effects of that money fades, reality will dawn on everyone. Mareena may wish Mahinda a nobody,so are many others. But he will be back more sober and wiser and stronger so, those who betrayed him beware!

  10. charithsls Says:

This election is a severe blow to Muslim voters & strengthened the hand of JHU as the king makers.
Champika said he brought nine lakhs with him & they will run the show.
Muslims lost face & their credibility with the major race when Sinhalese came to know after the results what Muslims have done. Even Muslims (& Tamils) voting en masse given only a few lakhs difference & hereafter the two major parties will learn to act disregarding the effects of the muslim votes as their leaders will jump the party at the last minute in spite of having had all the benefits. Sunday Island gives a good account how the muslims should keep mum at present as the majority is awaiting to take the revenge on MS the moment he is seen to antagonize them.MS will be very keen to shake off the shame of seen as a leader who came to power because of minority votes.
