The inevitable SLFP counter-coup

Had the SLFP executive committee meeting held yesterday been mishandled, it could have resulted in a seismic shift in the political landscape of Sri Lanka. But President Maithripala Sirisena steered clear of making any contentious changes. He remains the party chairman, Anura Priyadarshana Yapa the general secretary, Susil Premajayantha has been appointed national organiser and S.B.Nawinna the treasurer. An Advisory Council made up of former presidents and prime ministers has also been set up. The SLFP has been retained in one piece. There was little room really, to make any contentious appointments as MPs like Vidura Wickramanayake were openly saying that if any ‘unsuitable’ persons who had not been in the SLFP for a long time were recommended for high positions in the party, he would contest such positions himself. Wickramanayake even said that Maithripala Sirisena was a ‘prisoner’ of the UNP.
Indeed any contentious recommendation for a top party slot may have motivated a flood of contenders to come forward for the various positions and Sirisena would not have been able to control the situation. The main contentious appointment in question was making Rajitha Senaratne the national organiser as was reported on some websites. It was reported on some websites that Chamipka Ranawaka was to be made national organizer while Rajitha would be made the general secretary. It was clear that the old guard of the SLFP was girding their loins to prevent such appointments. As it turns out, Rajitha Senaratne has been given the less contentious position of Vice President while Ranawaka has not been accommodated. Nobody will really oppose Rajitha being made a Vice President of the party as he had started his political career in the SLFP and had he remained with the party throughout, he would have been one of the most senior party members today. What blasted his prospects were the years he spent in the SLMP, BNP and the UNP before rejoining the SLFP in 2007.
In the view of the present writer, clipping the wings of the State Minister of Defence Ruwan Wijewardene was an integral part of this strategy to keep the SLFP in one piece. It was both an insult to the UNP and a warning. Ruwan has been left with four marginal institutions, the Rana Viru Seva Authority, the Defence Services College, Defence Services Command and Staff College and the National Cadet Corp. Just days ago Ruwan was touring the north and pledging not to remove army camps and to give the three forces the opportunity to function with dignity. Yet with one stroke of the pen, the armed forces have been taken away from his purview. This is no less a coup than what happened in November 2003.
It’s not that the UNP did not provoke such an action. The flippant attitude that the UNP leadership adopted towards the allegation that John Amaratunga’s goons had assaulted the Wattala PS Chairman was spreading so much dissension within the SLFP that President Sirisena obviously had to fire a warning shot over the UNP to stop the situation from getting out of control. When the SLFP took one step backwards on the no-confidence issue, Lakshman Kiriella went so far as to direct jibes at the SLFP saying that the opposition was now ‘dumbstruck’. These jibes were taking their toll on the party and Sirisena obviously had to do something to calm the SLFP down. Clipping Ruwan’s wings appears to have been the strategy adopted by Sirisena to keep the SLFP happy. This is also a warning to the UNP that the president can take the police department as well away from the UNP’s control.
If he was to retain control over the SLFP, Sirisena would have had to take a step like this. He will have to continue to dangle the carrot of state power in front of the SLFP in order to keep them at heel. It goes without saying that if the SLFPers began to feel that Sirisena was doing the bidding of the UNP by keeping the SLFP on a leash, he would have gradually lost control of the party. Now, having clipped the wings of Ruwan Wijewardene and refrained from making any controversial changes in the office bearers of the party, Sirisena has moved to counter the disillusionment that was spreading throughout the party. There was some urgency in this as Dinesh Gunawardena, Vasudeva Nanayakkara, Wimal Weerawansa and Udaya Gammampila had announced a meeting in Nugegoda with the sole aim of making Mahinda Rajapaksa the prime ministerial candidate of the UPFA at the next parliamentary election. Sirisena had to do something fast to prevent mass defections from the SLFP to this new platform. For the time being, he seems to have succeeded in keeping the SLFP together.
In the run-up to yesterday’s SLFP executive committee (Samastha Lanka Karaka Sabhawa) meeting, a list of over 60 politicians who served in the Rajapaksa regime who collectively had over 2,000 complaints filed against them with the Bribery Commission was published. Among those whose names were mentioned were Basil Rajapaksa, Mahindananda Aluthgamage, Rohitha Abeygunawardene, Dullas Alahapperuma, Namal Rajapaksa, Wimal Weerawansa, Pavithra Wanniarachchi, Lakshman Yapa Abeywardene, Sanath Jayasuriya, Nimal Siripala de Silva, Dilan Perera, Lakshman Seneviratne, Kumara Welgama, Arumugam Thondaman, Johnston Fernando, Sarana Gunawardene, Felix Perera, A.L.M.Athaulla, Susil Premajayantha, Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, D.M. Jayaratne, Vijithamuni de Soysa, Jagath Pushpakumara, Sumedha Jayasena, Susantha Punchinilame, John Seneviratne, Udith Lokubandara, Dayasritha Tissera, Sajin Vaas Gunawardene, Nishantha Muthuhettigama, Mahinda Amaraweera, Lakshman Wasantha Perera, Bandula Gunawardene, Gamini Lokuge, Keheliya Rambukwella, Duminda Silva, S.M.Chandrasena, Lalith Dissanayake, Mervyn Silva, Gunaratne Weerakoon, S.B.Dissanayake and Nirmala Kotelawala.
In addition to this, complaints were also said to have been received against key officials of the past regime including ex-CJ Mohan Peiris, Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, P.B.Jayasundera, Ajith Nivaard Cabraal, Gamini Senarath and Anura Siriwardena. In short, virtually everybody who was anybody in the Rajapaksa regime is on the list. The director general of the Bribery Commission was transferred and a new official appointed by the Justice Minister of the new UNP government for the avowed purpose of ‘expediting’ investigations into complaints. The strategy of the UNP (and the JVP and JHU) was obviously to destroy the credibility of the UPFA with corruption and bribery charges against everybody who was anybody in the past government ahead of the parliamentary election and to wade through slaughter to victory.
If Maithripala Sirisena had stood by idly and allowed the opponents of the SLFP to have their way, he would have gone down in history as the man who destroyed the party. It is unlikely that Sirisena would want to end his career with such a black mark.

I think people should ask for explanation. People have a right to understand what is happening under the table and why ?
People should not how USA/INDIA managed to manipulate the ex-president and how.

SLFP must get back to its roots. The party of the common man veered away from its core in the past 11 years. During the past 11 years, the party leadership (de facto leader and national organizer) shuttled between citizens of the United Kingdom and the United States. Even the pro-western UNP was not that bad. We must accept this grave mistake and bring the party back to its roots of the five great forces.

What ever said and done the end game should be Mahinda Rajkapksa take over the country back again before the International community comprise of evil Americans,British and Indians,Diaspora and the Europeans get together and hand over half the country separately to Tamils & Muslims and allowing Sinhalese to live in the rest of the country.
I said that because the leaders we have today cannot be trusted. Ranil will say YES SIR to everything what International community demands. Sirisena is just a puppet with no backbone. Chandrika is a LTTE Sympathizer and a friend of Diaspora and she will never do anything good to the country. Tamils & Muslims cannot be trusted for a dime even. They are waiting for the right time to grab what ever possible with NO love for the country but for their own benefit.
Nimal,Vasu,Dinesh,Gamampila are more patriotic to the Motherland than all UNPer’s and other traitors who are in this Yahapalana Govt. They have experience and shown great love to our country when it was necessary and during rough times in the past. Corruption was in both sides for the last 60 years and it’s difficult to find not only a politicians even Govt servant who are not corrupted in this country. Whole world has this phenomenon even America,British and all the European countries. Chose a better Govt than this Jarapalanaya if you need to live in Peace and Harmony same like we were having during 2009 to 2014.

Indian penetration in SL is quite high… They even penetrated BOC, and it happened that SL BOC board member invited so called indian company as management consultant and they are pushing indian sub standard products to the bank and distorting the whole tender process. In one meeting I told these consultant to shut up since they do not understand SL market and don’t push their rubbish here since their mandate is now being compromised. Once tender conditions are compromised , then whole BOC standards will come down and indian control would be difficult to remove.
I know the idiot who brought these indians and waiting to get him to account what he has done.

Sri Lanka’s revenue collection slows down impacting 100- day programme

The Inland Revenue Department (IRD)’s continuing failure to collect taxes due to the lethargic attitude of officials and poor administration at the helm could hinder the 100 day relief programme of the new government and hurt economic growth, Treasury officials warned.
According to the IRD’s monthly revenue performance report up to February 10, revenue collection was Rs.2, 928 million, falling short of the Rs. 5 billion target by Rs. 2, 803 million.
The Department should double the revenue collection efforts to meet the target and the present Director General should implement pragmatic programme towards this end, they said.
But the department officials are fighting for promotions after the change of the government and some of them have staged a protest demonstration recently against the top administration.
This situation is aggravating day by day and this was brought to the attention of the new Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake as well, they disclosed.
The government will have to find an additional sum of Rs. 17 billion to meet the salary hike of public sector employees and pensioners, they said, adding that the reduction of tariffs on essential items would compel the Government to further cut down state expenditure.
This combination of reduced revenue and increased expenditure will inevitably result in an increase in the budget deficit and additional borrowing, they pointed out.
A senior Treasury official said the failure to increase tax revenue will cause pressure to cut capital spending “with a possible adverse impact on growth”.

By the way Latest news says that Sri Lanka’s new government will seek to borrow more than $4.0 billion from the IMF and other international lenders as it “restructures” expensive Chinese debt, the finance minister said Thursday.Ravi Karunanayake said he was travelling to Washington next week for talks with the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank on securing support to boost reserves and finance investments in health and education.”With the new government in place, there is a lot of international goodwill,” Karunanayake said.
This is going to be a litmus test for IMF of their integrity as an independent apolitical organisation. If they allocate $4.0 billion for a government which has foolishly and irresponsibly ignored the basic IMF conditionality in their Interim budget, then whole world will react.

We are beginning to think that Sri Lanka’s Socio-Economic problem is Socialism vs Capitalism.
Let’s face it : It appears that the west wants Capitalism in Lanka. Is the UNP & their minority support groups the chosen ones to instal that in Lanka ?
Only America has mostly Capitalism with dashes of Socialism from the time of the two great Roosevelts as Presidents e.g. Social Security. President Obama has been trying very hard to bring in fairer deals to the common people through Affordable Health Care Act etc but is constantly criticised/thwarted for that by the Republican Opposition ! He also tried to bring in Gun Control laws but was again thwarted.
Does the west itself now have pure Capitalism ? NO ! Europe has mostly SOCIALISM. There were TWO WORLD WARS/many Revolutions before SOCIALISM was installed in European countries. Britain herself has heavy duty social programs.
Sri Lanka is presently a Socialist state. Why should we change ??
In Lanka, it should be a 35-40% private sector with at least 60% State sector ventures in order to maintain employment for the masses and fair play economics/security for the masses.
We ought to try and adapt the German Constitution for Sri Lanka. This Constitution was put in place for Germany by US President Harry Truman after the WW II. He failed to do the same for USA. Today, German is flourishing, thanks to Pres Truman’s wise ideas.

Dear readers, pardon me for going away from the main theme of the article. Since currently we all are experiencing a political turmoil in Sri Lanka, let me suggest the following proposals that we must bring onto the bargaining table for the winning of ex president Mahinda Rajapaksha back into reigns. Mahinda needs us, we need Mahinda, so we must come to a deal with him. However if he declares that he will abolish 13th and will adhere to national development policy based on the consensus of a national task force for a production oriented economy, then the UNP and the My3 faction will end up in the political wilderness. May the triple Gem bless Mahinda to be enlightened with this simple political wisdom.
