The United National Party (UNP) Working Committee today unanimously decided to go for General Elections under the present system after April 23, sources said

Meanwhile Opposition Leader Nimal Siripala de Silva said today the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) would oppose any form of ‘urgent’ parliament Bill to curtail powers of the executive presidency and said the amendments to the executive presidency and electoral reforms should introduced simultaneously. This is the most appropriate time to introduce electoral reforms and amendments to the executive presidency and we will support them if introduced simultaneously. But it is learnt that the United National Party (UNP) is hoping to present a Bill in parliament to amend executive powers. We will oppose such a move,” he told a news conference. He said the Elections Commissioner had informed political party leaders on Monday that he could expedite and conclude amendments to the electoral system within 90 days. The Government can declare elections on the very next day no sooner the new system was implemented,” Mr. de Silva said. –
