President Mahinda Rajapakse is a great and noble person. His life story shows his dedication to the people and is a true Buddhist. It is rare for a country to get a President with all the qualities that he shows and it is Sri Lanka’s great good fortune that it happened in time to rid the country of the terrorist blight.

He has a vision for Sri Lanka and Sri Lankans. MR rescued the country from the death trap of terrorism. When the opposition, which is now in power nearly sacrificed the country, MR rescued the country from the very brink of annihilation and rebuilt it in record time. He rehabilitated even the hardcore terrorists in a truly Buddhistic fashion and used 90% of the funds to build the North and the East for the Tamils at the expense of his own support base.

He is being rewarded with highly fabricated character assassination programmes by people of the lowest level of character and ethics. It is sad to see an eighth standard educated moron who is spineless who has been placed in power by puppet masters and another psychologically warped person whose antics at Batalanda resulted in the investigation commission to recommend that his civic rights be removed speaking against a great a noble person like MR.

May President Mahinda Rajapakse live a long life and succeed against this band of thieves and puppets who have been put into power by powerful countries to allow them to suck the life blood out of Sri Lanka and destroy it utterly as they have done in many other places in the world. The more these puppets pander to these powerful countries the more they praise their puppets like a master praising a dog who is obedient.

“There is a force in the universe — call it God or spirituality or whatever you like — that wants the victory of truth and justice. This force will help you if you are steady, humble, and patient. Never ever give up however bad things get.”
Nelson Mandela (first South African black president)

A good documentary. LTTE kind of had the last laugh in assassinating Lakshman Kadirgamar before Mahinda assumed office. Had he survived, Sri Lanka would have presented a compelling case at the UNHRC and some local manipulators may never have had a chance. Even without a UNHRC success, he could have devised a way out.

Mahinda’s first term remains the best era of post-Independence Sri Lanka.

However, Mahinda cannot be praised for his second term which was a disaster in terms of the economy, national security, resettlement (Sinhalese and Muslims in particular and Tamils too if you ask them), development, democracy and governance.

Tragically, both Mandela and Mahinda failed their nations and the people after their historic victories.

I disagree with Cerberus on Mandela’s statement. Facts and the truth are two different things. Facts cannot be argued and always prevails. Facts cannot be defeated or manipulated (then they become lies). However, truth is a contested word. Different versions of the truth exist to different people. The version that is most sold triumphs. Other versions of the truth fail.

A classic example is the ethnic problem (or war crimes by Sri Lankan forces). The prevailing version of the “truth” that will triumph is there is an ethnic problem affecting Tamils and Sri Lankan troops did war crimes. This will not change. However, the facts are there is no ethnic problem and no systemic war crimes were committed by Lankan troops. However, this version of the truth has not been sold as much and it will not triumph (unless the relative sales change).

Truth shall triumph is an absurd claim and it never happens automatically. Hard work, persistent effort, lobbying, shrewd tactics and smart promotions are needed to make our version of the truth win.

During Mahinda’s first term, in addition to winning the war, the economy was managed better than anytime before. Borrowings were modest, development works were truly beneficial and long term, balance of payment deficit was controlled, steady economic growth ensued and things were under control. Jumbo Cabinet and other distractions failed to win people’s support. People simply flocked around Mahinda more and more every passing year. Each PC election increased Mahinda’s popularity.

All these went for a toss since 2010. People responded accordingly. Progressive elections saw Mahinda’s popularity shrink gradually. UNPers (Hirunika and Dayasiri) had to be hired to win elections. By September 2014 Uva PC election, it was clear Mahinda could not win 50%. Unpopularity was so intense people voted for a politician without a recognised political party and without any visible leadership skills.

64% in 2010 April ended up just 48% and 40% 5 years later. The largest fall in popularity of any government in history. Missing these vital signals (and our predictions) along the way as Sirima’s government did, spelt disaster.

The purpose of writing these is not to add insult to injury but to help future politicians avoid these pitfalls by recognising progressive signs and course correction along the way.
