The U.N delegation (José Antonio Guevara Bermúdez, Leigh Toomey and Elina Steinerte) who visited Sri Lanka recently to investigate Arbitrary Detention” of LTTE terrorist cadres in jail, have denied to listen to or accept a written appeal from the daughter of Navy Commodore D.K.P. Dassanayake who too is being arbitrarily detained and incarcerated along with Commander Sumith Ranasinghe on unsubstantiated charges by the current government.
Commodore Dassanayake and Commander Sumith Ranasinghe are decorated war heroes who have won numerous medals and accolades for their gallantry during the war for putting their own lives in harm’s way protecting thousands of innocent Tamil civilians from being harmed by the ruthless terrorists.
With this act of unequivocal refusal to lend an ear to genuine grievances of people who were arbitrarily detained and incarcerated, the U.N delegation has categorically violated article 55c of the United Nation’s Charter that pledges to uphold universal respect for, and observance of, human rights and fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as to race, sex, language, or religion.”
According to Manjari Dassanayake the daughter of the Commodore, her request was rejected by a local female assistant who was acting on the instructions of the U.N delegation stating she (Manjari) is not allowed to meet the delegates since her request is not related the LTTE.
However, Manjari was able to speak to the U.N delegates when they were passing by only to be told her father should be in jail!

This act of mean-spiritedness squarely goes against the ethos of the U.N and raises serious questions on the part of these delegates as to whether they are carrying out this task on behalf of the UNHRC or exclusively working for those parties with vested interests. i.e. influential strategists of the LTTE who are operating from the U.S/Western countries apparently manipulating the U.N.
It further translates to the unworthiness of these delegates to further remain as ambassadors of the U.N as they have violated the very Humanitarian Principles of Impartiality and Neutrality they are supposed to be defending and upholding.
We appeal to the Inspector General’s Office of the UNHRC to order those delegates to forward an apology to the daughter of Commodore D.K.P. Dassanayake and also they should accept the letter of appeal. It is of paramount importance to investigate any appeal of “Arbitrary Detention” without bias towards the LTTE. Last but not least, these delegation members should not be sent again on missions to Sri Lanka as they have violated the U.N charter and will not be well received by the people.
