A Deputy Inspector General of Police is under investigation for allegedly conspiring to assassinate President Maitripala Sirisena.
This comes as Joint Opposition Member of Parliament Mahindananda Aluthgamage yesterday (13) told a press conference in Colombo that there was evidence that Terrorist Investigation Division’s (TID) Deputy Inspector General Nalaka de Silva was behind the conspiracy.
Police Media Spokesman Superintendent Ruwan Gunasekara confirmed to Ceylon Today that the Inspector General of Police Pujith Jayasundara yesterday instructed the Police Special Investigations Unit (SIU) to inquire into allegations brought against the DIG. The directives were given to the SIU office by the IGP, based on the allegations levelled against DIG de Silva by a group of individuals earlier this week.
Aluthgamage also said that the conspirators were planning to attack former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa as well.
Earlier in the week, a group known as the Anti-Corruption Front, holding a press briefing in Kandy, accused DIG de Silva of conspiring against President Maithirpala Sirisena. Namal Kumara of the said Front claimed that recorded audio clipping of the various conversations, which provides evidence of the conspiracy, has been handed over to the National Police Commission, after the group had filed a complaint against DIG de Silva.
Superintendent Gunasekara noted that Police SIU will conduct a separate investigation into the allegations alongside the National Police Commission.
Aluthgamage added that until the DIG concerned is apprehended in this regard and as the JO does not have any trust in justice meted out by the current Police Department, neither him nor any MP of the JO, if they were to be summoned by the Police, will not visit any Police Station and only appear in Courts in this connection henceforth.
The MP made these remarks during a JO convened media briefing held in Borella yesterday.
Speaking further, MP Aluthgamage said A conspiracy to assassinate the current President was published in today’s press as well as in news reports aired on television. I am going to talk about this conspiracy today. It is the Police, led by IGP Pujith Jayasundera, that is behind this plan. These charges have been directed at DIG Nalaka de Silva. Aluthgamage also said that the DIG tells Namal Kumara to do something now. The DIG says that plans should be drawn to bump off both leaders with the help of an underworld gangster and that it should be deposited to the account of a person called Pushparaj. Furthermore the underworld gang leader who is to be used in this murder plot is a noted drug trafficker. He is against the current President and the former Defence Secretary. The reason for that is they both take measures to bust the local drug trade.”
Aluthgamage said that it was the IGP who had introduced Nalaka de Silva to Namal Kumara.
