State Minister Ranjan Ramanayake’s allegation that there were Ministers and MPs who used cocaine will be forwarded to the CID for investigation, Public Enterprise, Kandyan Heritage and Kandy Development Minister, Lakshman Kiriella said yesterday.

“In my view, there are no parliamentarians addicted to cocaine or any other narcotic substances”, he told a political meeting at Wattegama.

Politicians cannot be blamed for associating with people across the board in society. There are different types and kinds they have to deal with, and even if they are addicted to one vice or another, politicians cannot exclude them in carrying out their political work, the Minister noted.

Politicians have to associate with even IRCs in day-to-day life, but that does not mean that politicos are addicted to drugs, Kiriella said.

“That’s why we have decided to ask the CID to probe the allegations leveled by State Minister Ramanayake against lawmakers”, he explained.

The Minister further said that a presidential election will be held this year and the UNP will field its own candidate.

“We are optimistic of forming our own government without a coalition. We could not do much for the benefit of the country because of the obstacles the party faced when in the coalition”, he said.

“We came out with many useful proposals but they could not be implement then due to leg-pulling”, Kiriella added.

The UNP chief organizer of Pathadumbara, Tilina Bandara Tennakoon, also addressed the meeting.
