Amid reports of lawsuits being filed against former defence secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa in the US, the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) said he had made an irrevocable decision to renounce his US citizenship despite it being the best source of protection against allegations of war crimes.

At a news conference SLPP chairman G.L. Peiris referred to the remarks made by Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo on Friday that international officials trying to prosecute American military personnel will not be allowed to enter the US.

We are determined to protect the American, allied, and civilian personnel from living in fear of unjust prosecutions for actions taken to defend our great nation,” Mr. Pompeo told reporters at the State Department.

Commenting on these remarks Prof. Peiris said Mr. Rajapaksa as a US citizen had the best protection from war crimes allegations but however he would say goodbye to all these facilities by renouncing his US citizenship.

He said he wondered how frivolous attempts by some elements could thwart the renunciation of his US citizenship. Prof. Peiris said the attempt by Sunday Leader Editor Lasantha Wickramatunga’s daughter Ahimsa was in connection with an incident that took place more than ten years ago. He said there was another action being pursued against Mr. Rajapaksa in connection with an incident that took place in 2007.

Prof. Peiris said Mr. Rajapaksa had visited the US every year, but no case had been filed. However, he said the action which had been initiated so suddenly could be connected to the presidential election.  (

A question that bothers many a patriot is that he was the Defence Secretary since November 2005 until January 2015. Why didn’t he revoke his US citizenship then? Is he revoking his US citizenship just to contest elections?

In the same vain someone can ask the question: why did they wait until now to bring a case against him in the US?. The US should allow him to revoke his citizenship as they do to any other person; whether Gota can win here is another matter. During his time as defence secy, he showed that he is not a politician.

  3. Christie Says:

The people behind the attacks on Gota are connected to the Indian Empire.

In 2005 Indian intelligence Services failed by not taking Gota in to account when India and Indian Colonial Parasites backed Mahinda over Ranil.

So India and Indian Parasites are after Gota.

In Wickramatunga casse Pakiyasothi Sarawanmuthtu an Indian Colonial Parasite knows the whole story.

The other one s by Yasmin Sooka an Indian Colonial Parasite from South Africa.

  4. Dilrook Says:

Another grave danger of executive presidency is that if anything were to happen to the president, Ranil becomes president without having won any election because he is supported by most in parliament. Otherwise Karu becomes president which is even worse. He is highly incompetent and even unable to discharge his duties as Speaker. He is absent on most days and his biased action is well known. From frying pan to the fire itself!
