Uvatenne Sumana Thera remanded over alleged financial fraud

Chief incumbent of the Maligawatta Sri Bodhirajarama Vihara Uvatenne Sumana Thera has been remanded till December 14 by Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court over an alleged financial fraud relating to coconut oil deal.

The CID alleged that Sumana Thera had issued eight dishonored cheques amounting to Rs.58 million in lieu of purchasing coconut oil from a businessman in Dematagoda.

The CID told the court that the suspect monk had purchased 84,240 kg of coconut oil while acting in the capacity of a private company director. (Lakmal Sooriyagoda)
