In a bizarre statement, Industries Minister Sunil Handunnetti said yesterday that Sri Lanka had ‘won the Nobel Prize for tea’ after entering the Guinness World Records for producing the world’s most expensive tea.
Addressing the media, Handunnetti who seemed unaware of what a Nobel prize meant said this was a proud moment for the country, proving the unmatched quality of Ceylon tea and strengthening its place in the global luxury market.
Sri Lanka recently entered the Guinness World Records after the New Vithanakande Tea Factory achieved recognition for producing the world’s most expensive tea.
The record was secured with its premium Ceylon Black Tea (FFExSp), which was sold in Japan for LKR 252,500 per kilogram (approximately ¥125,000).
