General election: President will lead SLFP to form a National Government with UNP

First Television interview by President Sirisena
President Maithripala Sirisena on Saturday (Jan. 31) declared that though he was the leader of the SLFP, he wouldn’t undermine the UNP in the run-up to the forthcoming parliamentary election but lead the SLFP in balancing act for the benefit of the party. President says SLFP wouldn’t be let down. The President asserted that whatever the outcome of the next parliamentary election, the two major parties, the SLFP and the UNP would have to work together and form a national government as stated in his policy declaration.
President Sirisena stressed that the success of the on-going 100-day schedule aimed at providing relief as well as to bring in far reaching constitutional reforms to restore parliamentary democracy would entirely depend on the support extended by the 127 member strong SLFP/UPFA parliamentary group.
He further assured that his wife and children would under no circumstance use SLAF helicopters unless they accompanied him. The President stressed that the use of SLAF VIP helicopter fleet would be restricted.
The President also prohibited the indiscriminate use of children in functions attended by him, though they could participate in specific tasks such as recital of Jayamangalagatha.
The President called for a change of attitude as well as reappraisal of priorities to overcome present-day political challenges in a more peaceful political culture.
Initiating a new political culture president Sirisena directed that he should not be called His Excellency” anymore. The President also stressed that there was absolutely no requirement to call his wife, First Lady. The new leader said that he could be called President Maithripala Sirisena and his wife, Mrs. Sirisena.
Commenting on the need to be mindful of government expenditure, President Sirisena said that in line with an election promise he wouldn’t move into President’s House. Admitting that he was actually not so comfortable living in such a place, President Sirisena stressed that in consultation with the government action would be taken to preserve the President’s House as well as several President’s Houses in the provinces maintained at a massive cost to the taxpayer. The President said that he wouldn’t use any of those palatial houses; therefore a tangible plan was required to protect them and explore ways and means of using them.
The President also revealed that in consultation with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, he cancelled an order placed by the previous government to acquire a special aircraft from the US for the exclusive use of his predecessor Mahinda Rajapaksa. The President claimed that Sri Lanka was earlier scheduled to take delivery of the aircraft next month. It would have cost USD 16 million and that amount could be now utilised to acquire spare parts required by the Sri Lankan airlines, he said.
While stressing the importance of having security at an acceptable level, the President said that he had directed sharp reduction in the contingent assigned for his security. The previous president had 4,000 security officers and men, President Sirisena said that he would use only 1000 security officers and men. “I recently instructed senior officers as regards the deployment of vehicles as well as other assets for my protection.”
The President said that he would have given up presidency in just four years if the National Executive Council (NEC) had not told him that such action would be inimical to the national interest. The President recalled the circumstances under which previous presidents had failed to keep the promise to do away with the executive presidency. The President said that in accordance with his election manifesto, dictatorial features in the executive presidency would be repealed by April 20, 2015 and a presidency accountable to Parliament would come into being.
Commenting on delay on the part of the government to take legal action against those accused of waste, corruption and irregularities, President Sirisena said that the results of the on-going investigations would be known in the coming weeks. The President assured that those found guilty wouldn’t be allowed to escape by siding with the new government.
Responding to a query as regards the take-over of the SLFP by him immediately after the Jan. 8, 2015 presidential poll, President Sirisena said that the decision had been made at a meeting with his predecessor at the official residence of Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa. “My meeting with Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa lasted for about 10 minutes. My predecessor complained about post-election violence. I pointed out that there had been many incidents in the run-up to the poll, while promising to take every possible step to prevent incidents. We had tea and parted,” the President said, revealing that the venue had been decided by Mr. Rajapaksa. “Although it was to be one on one, the Speaker, too, participated in the discussion.”
The swift transfer of control of the party had helped avert a damaging split which could have caused irreparable loss to the organisation, the president said.
Pointing out that the then incumbent launched his campaign eight months ahead of January poll, President Sirisena said that the Opposition couldn’t have defeated the Rajapaksas without spearheading role played by the social media. Young boys and girls had played a significant role in the Opposition strategy, the President said, the social media and the Internet had contributed to his victory in a big way.
The President was perhaps responding to his predecessor, who recently publicly acknowledged his failure to counter social media campaign. Former President Rajapaksa said that their failure to realise the threat and take counter measures had caused a debilitating set back to his campaign.

That is an excellent idea. SLFP, UNP, JHU and even JVP should get onto the same stage. JVP should move forward by forgetting the past for the sake of the country.

Once corrupted SLFPers are booted out Sirisena can bring his dream true.
According to President only handful of SLFP politicians were involved in corruption. Even he is against some of the SLFP politicians who are trying to put all the blame on Rajapakse family and escape.

I am against the UNP and SLFP division. Remember, the last govt exploit UNP, JVP and SLFP division while most of the govt ministers from other parties. both SLFP and UNP has undesirable elements. So, get rid of those peole and fight the election both parties on one stage. Because, there is hardly difference in both party flat forms. As “USA says, it is just the rivalry and not an ideological difference. If SLFP, UNP, JHU and JVP get together, we can achieve a lot more.
Only the crooks in both parties will not like this as that will not benefit them.

In 1977 UNP was winning. Everyone knew. JR had the fantastic opportunity to field GOOD men and women but he did not. He picked some dirty people. CBK in 1994 was a little better. MR in 2010 should have done it but VERY BAD selection.
IF My3 can crack this code SL will do well. That will FORCE UNP to come clean too.
Otherwise UNP will win the next election.
My3 should NOT feel INDEBTED to UNP. His contract is only for 100 days. Beyond that NO obligation to UNP.

That is a good idea. If Maithripala Sirisena plans to promote SLFP, he should field only the best candidates and he can target the 75% of the Sinhala votes and 69% of the Sinhala buddhist votes.
A friendly competition between UNP and SLFP is desirable.

What we want is not a national govt, but an all party govt. So, major parties are together.
We should not promote three wheeler parties or parties working for a particular religion or a ethnic group.

UNP Yahapalanaya has already demonstrated today at Wattala Pradeshiya Saba Meeting. It is very important that UNP should be defeated at the next general elections in order to properly establish the Yahapalanaya as promoted and anticipated by President Sirisena.

I do agree 100% with your first comment, English version of the 2nd. The President does not use the term Maithreepalanaya anymore. It has no meaning.
UNP does not have 100% good people and so are the SLFPers. The President has accepted the reality but we must support his vision.
Provincial Councils got to be dissolved and filled elected people with minimum specified qualifications, if 13A cannot be removed right now. People can demand this to be included under the proposed constitutional changes.

These are very appropriate moves, at the moment, as the threat to his life from the International Mafia including LTTE supporters who were hell-bend on regime change during Mahinda Rajapakse’s period is no more there.
Even though this interview was stage-managed by the notorious pro LTTE sympathiser, Upul Shantha Sannasgala (One of Srisena’s campaign man) he has deliberately omitted the most important issue like fully implementation of the notorious 13th amendment to the constitution where Ranil is always barking on.

Is MY3 squeaky Clean? Certainly Not.
About 5 months ago when I went to Sri Lanka, I realised that my cousin who is a consultant paediatrician in one of the leading government hospital who got involved in purchasing million dollar worth of medical equipment for the hospital. I casually enquired about procedure for execution of tenders in Sri Lanka as I have been involved in such tender evaluations in London for the last 40 years.
What I found was stunning. Any corrupt official or a minister can easily manipulate the procedure and earn some commissions from the unsuspecting suppliers without any risk of being caught up by the ministry auditors or accountants.
This is exactly the epicentre of corruption in Sri Lanka where the misuse of public office for private gain can be easily carried out without any risk. By the way this Ministry was under Mithripala Sirisena at that time.
Then when I was visiting Polonnaruwa, I came to know about how Mithripala Sirisena’s brother got a World Bank Loan meant for small scale rice mill owners.
The proposed World Bank project provided long-term credit to the private sector for setting up modern integrated rice processing units in major producing areas in the world.
The story goes to say that when tenders are called, political influence has used to manipulate tendering procedure so that only two proposals were submitted, though tendering procedure requires minimum of five proposals out of which two were to be selected. Other tender was from another SLFP deputy minister. They both got the loan without any competition.
So, Has Sirisena manipulated the tender procedure to get only two tenders for the loan? It is up to Corruption commission to investigate it further sooner or later.

What really happened during the last Presidential Election has to be carefully looked at.
That the Election was ’cooked’ in favor of new President Sirisena’s is apparent (read Dilrook’s 2 articles on the matter on Lankaweb).
Other subtle but important points to consider :
* Mr Sirisena has been chosen by a diabolically clever group – we can call them Kapitalist Kolombian mostly Kristian Korporation (KKKK). They are a group mainly consisting of earlier failed UNP folk (RW, CBK, Mangala M. to name a few) and legal eagles from minority groups. Mr Sirisena has been chosen by the KKK for his desirable qualities, some of it to fool the masses.
Some examples of how the masses are being fooled. Example 1: The so called private sector salary increase is really only an ALLOWANCE, NOT A SALARY INCREASE. It is a one time Allowance of Rs 10,000 split into Rs 5,000 for now, and another Rs 5,000 AFTER the elections in April. The ‘After’ part is obviously to make the voter vote for the UNP/SLFP nexus.
Example 2: The private sector tax increases in the Budget : Can erase off most of these taxes by a bit of ’cooking of books’. Any savvy accountant will oblige.
* Also, dear Readers of Lankaweb, let us ask ourselves why it is that the Prov. Council of the North did NOT use the govt allocations of funds to the North. Only some 23% of the allocated funds were used during the MR govt time. Let us ask ourselves what the objective here was if not to discredit the MR GoSL as neglecting the Northern Tamils.
The other matter is the Upcountry Tea area where the Tamils are controlled by the CWC : The huge sums of EPF monies of the Tea pluckers were pilfered by none other than the Tea Brokering Companies of Colombo who are in charge of the Govt owned tea estates. The MR govt. had to lop timber and sell off timber to make good these lost monies.
Also the CWC never wants to upgrade the living conditions of the Tamil tea pluckers. They are still kept in the British line rooms. Also, the tea plucking is not mechanised as done in S. Africa, India and China. China produces cheap tea plucking machines. The internet is full of complaints about the conditions under which tea pluckers of Lanka live. MR, at the last election, promised to give these tea pluckers proper dwellings out of the tea estates. As things are, he is unable to that.
Tea pluckers of Lanka will continue to suffer. Why are Tamil folk deliberately kept down as ‘discriminated people’ by their own Tamil leaders ? One cannot help but think of ‘beggars wounds’ being exploited over and over again to give Lanka a bad name abroad. As well, to keep the Tamil population in different places in Lanka under the big foot of Tamil leaders.
Tamil illegal migrants to Lanka : These people have been given voting rights. Citizenship comes next ? The Tamil population in Lanka keeps increasing at alarming rates, no matter that over a million have migrated to the west where they manipulate the politicos with funds and votes. Lately there is talk of returning to Lanka so called Tamil refugees in Tamil Nadu camps. How many of them are genuine refugees ? Why can’t Tamil Nadu take back her own people ? Tamil Nadu is the Nation for the Tamil People.
These are subtle points, but of enormous social significance.
Another point I like to make is that Pres. Sirisena contradicts himself constantly. In fact, he is constant in his self contradictions. Example : Pres. Sirisena said that MR’s home in the South was not searched by the police, whereas everyone knows it was.
* The formation of the Governing Council which can over ride Parliament. This Council has been formed in line with the Latimer House Rules (LHR). As pointed out in a Lankaweb article earlier, the LHR is a set of rules hatched in Britain’s upper class circles to control the public in various countries.
No need to say any more about the LHR.
The unholy hurry in which all the actions are being taken by the new govt. leads us to suspect of a deeper and reason at the bottom of it all. That reason is that the corner stones are being laid for the eventual DIVISION OF THE COUNTRY.
Is the Governing Council aware of this ? There are DISTRACTION GALORE to take our attention away from the REAL DANGERS
facing the country.
Is the new President, Mr Sirisena, aware of all this ?

A CORPORATE JET is NOT needed. In 2012 and 2013 we bought 3 BELL helicopters for VVIP travel on top of existing 6.
$16 million must be earned by poor housemaids. It is better spent elsewhere.
My3 also has a threat to his life but he doesn’t waste so much. NAMAL is behind this EXTRAVAGANZA too. NOT MR.

You have not closely followed the news during the past election. All Tamils without ID cards were issued ID cards and allowed to vote. Check with Elections Commissioner’s office.

I assume you are referring to the increase in registered voters an not the voter turn out.
I give you three reasons for it and you can pick the one you think best suits you.
1) Many of the 1 million IDP in India and other areas of Sri Lanka were “beamed up” to Jaffna District to vote.
2)Tamils from other parts of Sri Lanka used the super road conditions to vote twice.
3)In 2010 many Tamils were displaced from their habitat and had no opportunity to register to vote 6 months after the end of the war. 2015 following resettlement they have registered to vote. (see Ministry of Resettlement & Election Dept Statistics)
I have yet to read any remarks or comments from either Sri Lankan (reputable) newspapers or even Mahinda Rajapakse Campaign team making such an issue.
Obviously certain Lankaweb commentators are well informed of this “anomaly” that even an astute politician like Mahinda Rajapakse has missed this.
Strong letter of protest to the Election Commissioner is now warranted.

There is no BALANCE to your STATEMENTS; EVERYTHING is PRESENTED as if it is a REASON TO HANG MR! That is the BEGINNING and the END of your REASONING …. BECAUSE it WAS and IS your GOAL as an EELAMIST!
There were MANY COMPELLING REASONS to develop the North and East Rapidly:
1. Defuse International Criticism quickly,
2. Enable the Tamil people, however much they supported the LTTE in the past, the opportunity to rapidly reconstruct their livelihoods,
3. To CREATE the BASIC INFRASTRUCTURE NECESSARY for Sinhala people to WILLINGLY VOLUNTEER to settle in the North and East in search of greater opportunities.
Sinhala people will not settle in a devastated war zone, without decent Roads, Railways, Post Offices, Banks, Police Security, Supermarkets, and all the infrastructure necessary to create jobs for workers, and the means for farmers and other producers of manufactured goods, to sell their products locally, and in markets in the rest of the country.
That voluntary migration and settlement by Sinhala people, is not the RAPID GOSL sponsored settlement we like to see in the North and East, but is very likely to be MORE PERMANENT & STABLE than GOSL settlement BECAUSE of the National Infrastructure that the GOSL was creating there to INTEGRATE the entire nation into ONE WHOLE.
That is the PRINCIPAL REASON why the TNA DOES NOT WANT Infrastructre Development by the GOSL in the North and East. They don’t want it UNTIL THEY HAVE THE LAND and POLICE Powers to prevent the migration and settling of Sinhala people in those areas. EXCLUSION of Sinhala people from SETTLING in those areas WAS and WILL FOREVER BE the FOCUS of their RACIST concept of EELAM!
And you, “Facebook” Lorenzo … KNEW that VERY WELL … so you did your UTMOST to UNDERMINE and OUST the UPFA GOSL before that OBJECTIVE of INTEGRATING the North & EAST into the rest of Sri Lanka could be achieved!

Any dumb guy can see how these Jaraplanaya is moving. Americans are praising them and say excited to help them. They are on target.
