COLOMBO: Feelings in Sri Lanka after the two-day visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi are mixed, both among the Sinhalese majority and the Tamil minority.

To look at the brighter side first, Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena described the visit as a blessing” and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe lauded Modi’s speech in parliament as a clarion call to take Lanka-India relations to new heights. Both Sirisena and Wickremesinghe broke protocol in interacting with Modi. While the President journeyed to Anuradhapura to play host to Modi at the Mahabodhi tree, the Lankan Prime Minister received Modi and saw him off at the airport, when this task should normally be done by the Minister-in-Waiting, Lakshman Kiriella.

When Modi was in Jaffna, the Tamils who had gathered to hear him, took to him spontaneously, cheering him lustily whenever he offered to help them face the ravages of the 30 year war and assured them that India will never let them down. Some beneficiaries of the Indian housing scheme shed tears of joy.

Northern Province Chief Minister C.V.Wigneswaran said that he was blessed” to give the welcome address  and praised Modi for advocating cooperative federalism” as a model for Sri Lanka.

Modi has implanted the idea of cooperative federalism and devolution in the minds of Lankan leaders,” the CM said.

The Sunday Island described Modi’s visit as a resounding success.” The Tamil daily Thinakkural  said that Tamil leaders should heed his advice to workout new strategies to deal with the new and friendlier Sirisena-Wickremesinghe regime.

Flip Side

On the downside, Sunday Times criticized Modi’s promotion of the system of devolution contained in the 13 constitutional Amendment (13A) and his appeal to go beyond it. The paper said that the Provincial Councils set up under 13A are a drain on the exchequer. It also criticized Modi’s refusal to take action to stop poaching by Indian fishermen. The Tamil daily Uthayan said that Modi’s words were empty as he had nothing concrete to offer to the Tamils on devolution.

When I asked Modi if India would help ensure greater devolution, he only said that he could not believe I was 75 !” joked Wigneswaran, the Northern Province CM.

“Modi has implanted the idea of cooperative federalism and devolution in the minds of Lankan leaders,” the CM said.”

With that kind of statement THERE IS NO BRIGHT SIDE FOR THE SINGHALESE… MAYBE FOR THE TAMILS. UGH.

    So MODI CAME
    \MODI SAW
    AND MODI CONQUERED

WHAT DID THE SINGHALESE NATIONALIST MOVEMENT IN SRI LANKA DO? WRIT BUSILY IN THE LANKAWEB THEN GO HOME AND FEEL CONTENT. JOB WELL DONE.

Now lets give these “nationalists’ an example

If the leader of Pakistan visited India under the leadership of the BJP. THEN WENT TO KASHMIR AND TALKED TO THE KASHMIR SEPARATIST LEADER: “SYED ALI SHAH GEELANI” ABOUT KASHMIR SEPARATISM OR EVEN THE MILDER VERSION
THAT SINCE PAKISTAN IS THE OFFICIAL HOMELAND OF ANY SUBCONTINENT MUSLIMS THE LEADER OF PAKISTAN SHASTRI HAS THE RIGHT TO TALK TO THE KASHMIR MUSLIM POPULATION ABOUT ALIGNING WITH PAKISTAN, WITH AN ADDED INCENTIVE FOR ECONOMIC HELP.

THEN GO TO MODI AND TALK ABOUT RETAINING ARTICLE 370 PLUS POSSIBLY ENTERTAINING A PLEBISCITE FOR KASHMIR TO SET A DATE TO VOTE WHETHER THEY WANT TO BE PART OF INDIA, PAKISTAN OR AN INDEPENDENT NATION.

I COULD JUST SEE THE HINDU NATIONALIST RUN TO THE NEAREST HINDU NATIONALIST PAPER TO FEVERISHLY WRITE ON HOW OUTRAGEOUS THIS IS AND THEN GO HOME. NOT!!!!

THEY WILL BRING HELL AND BRIMSTONE UPON PAKISTAN. THEY WILL BE SCREAMING THEIR HEADS OFF ACROSS INDIA.

SEE HOW IT IS DONE. IF NO ONE WILL EVEN MAKE A LITTLE SQUEAK OF A SOUND THAT WOULD GRAB ATTENTION AFTER MODI DID THIS VISIT FOLLOWED WITH A “SUGGESTION” FOR FEDERALISM WHICH IS THE SAME AS AMENDMENT 13 THEN PLEASE TELL ME WHY WOULD RAJAPAKSE WANT TO RETURN TO A NATION OF SHEEP?

WHY DO I KEEP REFERRING TO THE SINGHALESE AND THE SINGHALESE NATIONALISTS AS SHEEP?

    For the saying goes

“A NATION OF SHEEP WILL BEGET A GOVERNMENT OF WOLVES”. Colombo now can afford wolves for the populace are acting like sheep and Rajapakse most likely does not want to be the leader of sheep.

  2. Mr. Bernard Wijeyasingha Says:

FOR THE SINGHALESE NATIONALIST MOVEMENT I SUGGEST THE FOLLOWING CHILD RHYME AS YOUR ANTHEM TILL YOU GET A BACK BONE:

Baa, baa, black sheep, have you any wool?
Yes sir, yes sir, three bags full!

    One for the master,
    One for the dame,
And one for the little boy
    Who lives down the lane

    Baa, baa, black sheep,
    Have you any wool?
    Yes sir, yes sir,
    Three bags full…

    Baa, baa, white sheep,
    have you any wool?
    yes sir, yes sir,
    three needles full.

    one to mend a jumper,
    one to mend a frock,
and one for the little girl,
    with holes in her sock.

    Baa, baa, white sheep,
    have you any wool?
    yes sir, yes sir,
    three needles full…

    Baa, baa, grey sheep,
    have you any wool?
    yes sir yes sir ,
    three bags full.

    one for the kitten,
    one for the cats,
    and one for the owner,
    to knit some woolly hats.

    Baa, Baa, brown sheep,
    have you any wool?
yes sir, yes sir, three bags full.

    One for the mammy ,
    One for the daddy
and one for the little baby
    Who lives down the lane.

    Baa, baa, bare sheep,
    have you any wool?
No sir, no sir, no bags full.

    None for the master,
    none for the dame,
and none for the little boy
    who lives down the lane.

    Baa, baa bare sheep,
    have you any wool?
    No sir, no sir,
    no bags full…

  3. Lorenzo Says:

No guard of honor for Modi?

Rajiv had one. IF Modi received what Rajiv got, he would be dead by now.

IF Endia will not let Tamils down, why not take the 3 million Tamils in SL back to Endia? That is the BEST way to look after them!!

Moda Modi should realize Tamils gave his party only 1 SEAT at the Endian election out of 39.

  4. SA Kumar Says:

    Baa, baa, bare sheep,
    have you any wool?
No sir, no sir, no bags full.

    None for the master,
    none for the dame,
and none for the little boy
    who lives down the lane.

    Baa, baa bare sheep,
    have you any wool?
    No sir, no sir,
    no bags full…

    – Like it

  5. Mr. Bernard Wijeyasingha Says:

Lorenzo: I agree. If Tamils think they can control Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka and in the United Kingdom than so can the Singhalese CONTROL THE TAMILS IN SRI LANKA

IF THE TAMILS WANT TO BRING BACK HELL FOR THE SINGHALESE WITH AS 2ND ATTEMPT AT ELAM. WITH SIDE LINING CHINA FOR THE PRO TAMIL INDIA THEN
THE SINGHALESE CAN SIDE LINE THE TAMILS IN SRI LANKA TO THE EXTENT THEY WOULD WISH TO LEAVE. IF THEY USE THEIR NEW LANDS TO PUSH FOR ELAM AS THE PALESTINIANS ARE DOING THEN WIPE OUT ANY TRACES OF THE TAMIL HERITAGE FROM SRI LANKA LIKE PAKISTAN HAS DONE REGARDING THE HINDU HERITAGE IN HER LAND.
