Sri Lanka’s president says the organisers of an Enrique Iglesias gig should be whipped, as punishment over the behaviour of some female fans.
President Maithripala Sirisena said local women running on stage to kiss the singer and throwing their underwear at him during a concert in Colombo on 20 December was “most uncivilised”.
“This is most uncivilised behaviour that goes against our culture,” President Sirisena told a public meeting.
“I don’t advocate that these uncivilised women who removed their brassieres should be beaten with toxic stingray tails, but those who organised such an event should be.”
Whipping with “toxic stingray tails” refers to an ancient punishment reserved for hardened criminals in medieval Sri Lanka.
Public displays of affection are frowned upon in conservative Sri Lankan society.
Police are known to have arrested couples for kissing in public parks.
The concert was part of the Latin pop star’s Love and Sex world tour.

In a way he is right. We should not follow the west and let those young rich Colombians chance to bring USA to Colombo.
But there are more important issues he should realise wrong and address them NOW.
1. Give his brother a job he is worthy ( may be Manager of a Cooperative shop)
2. Don’t interfere with the justice system but get rid of rouge judges.
3. If you want to bring your children into politics let them start from grassroots.
4. Sack all the rouge Ministers and MPs.
5. Punish police and CID rouges and reinstate law and order. Make sure they catch the right suspect not the innocent.
After this is done you can eat ice cream. Now you can even afford Kiri Hodi.

Pacha sira is only trying to divert attention from the pathetic situation his government is in by whipping up a deer pelt at home. Those who attend these type events give a damn about our culture and values. They live in a different world and as if Sirisena didn’t know about it.

Thank you so much for pointing out this uncivilized behaviour of this girl who as you said should be whipped with a ‘Madu Waligey’ just like in glorious Saudi Arabia and the other open-minded ‘civilized’ countries in the middle east..
I mean why should we be concerned about such trivial matters like abuse of minor children, ethanol, ecstasy when what we should really worry about is some hormone-charged girl getting on stage to kiss her idol??!!

Cricket and concerts from abroad ‘modernises’ and connects the outside world to Sri Lanka, especially for the younger set.
This is a sensitive topic.
There ought to be space and areas for young people court in privacy. False values and morality will not get us anywhere.
Public displays of excesses which can offend others sensibilities ought to be avoided. Parents and teachers have to talk to the young folk of these things.
GoSL should seriously consider handing out free birth control material to all adults needing such material, to contain population growth, and unwanted pregnancies which some resort to terminate through dangerous illegal abortions. An unwanted child is the saddest thing on Earth. Stop such events happening.
