Rajapaksa’s SLPP sweeps Elpitiya local government elections indicating trend

Colombo, October 11 (newsin.asia): The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) founded and led by former Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has swept the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha (local government) elections winning all the 17 divisions.

The win is of great importance in as much as it indicates the popularity of the SLPP and the Rajapaksas ahead of the Sri Lankan Presidential election to be held on November 16. Gotabaya Rajapaksa, a younger brother of Mahinda Rajapaksa is a Presidential candidate.

Elpitiya is in Galle District in South Sri Lanka. The election saw 70% polling.

The total number of overall votes obtained by the SLPP is 23,372. It got 17 seats. The United National Party (UNP) has secured 7 seats after obtaining some 10,113 votes. The United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) led by Lankan President Maitripala Sirisena secured 3 seats after obtaining 5,273 votes. Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) secured 2 seats after obtaining 2,435 votes.

A total of 53,384 voters were eligible to cast their votes at the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha election which was held at 47 polling booths. 155 candidates from recognized political parties contested.
