Global Pandemic: Coronavirus has shaken the world
Posted on March 20th, 2020

Corona virus has today impacted 182 countries with 246,467 confirmed cases and 10,047 deaths. In fact, though China had 80,967 confirmed cases the death toll was 3,248 and China proudly claims zero cases in China. However, Italy with 41,035 confirmed cases has 3,405 deaths exceeding that of China. What did China do right and what is Italy doing wrong? This is the question that engulfs most countries now dealing with the coronavirus coupled with indiscipline and selfish attitude of citizens as seen in the case of Sri Lanka. The peak in cases and contaminations has been as a result of contaminated Sri Lankans arriving from Italy in secret and refusing to be quarantined.

With no cure it is imperative that the people help governments, health authorities and law enforcement by staying at home and distancing oneself from others. It is the only way we can presently overcome something that humans are today having no control over.

It is times like this we return to Buddha’s teachings – Nothing is permanent. Everything is impermanent. Do good because that good will follow us like our shadow.

    Shenali,

Your last sentence of this lengthy article is the most important of all in the present context. How many of those dead would have expected their death like this?. But how many in this world are trying to amass wealth unjustly to live for ever?.

Couple of days ago I was watching a BBC program in which they were interviewing two of their people regarding the sudden closure of schools in the UK and how they are going to keep the students occupied. Two ladies were explaining what they would do. One of them was a head teacher of a school by the name Loraine. Covered behind head on the wall was a picture of Buddha which I find in many homes in SL. When ever she moved her head I could see it clearly. Perhaps this lady must have picked it up in in SL when holidaying. These people when holidaying they only meet the tour guides and ordinary people, not the politicos and see how this religion has affected their well being, happiness etc.
I think these ordinary folks in European countries are better Buddhist than our so called politicos who are there to serve us. They gather in their private houses and take decisions on purchases amounting to billions of dollars and syphone off large chunks of money belonging to the ordinary people for themselves. Some others commit daylight robbery of central bank and now come and give sermons to the citizens as if they are the saviours. They are all whitewashing themselves using Corona.
    Will the people forget?.

I am amazed and thoroughly disappointed that non of the world religious leaders have said anything about this. They must tell their followers that it is time to change the way they live. Stop being too greedy, stop polluting the air,sea and water. stop over indulgence and consumption. Stop messing with nature (genetically modification etc for profits), follow the basic principles of their faith. Worshipping and ceremonies are only secondary.

  3. dingiri bandara Says:

Italy is one of the worst affected countries but the Vatican is so silent. It is not surprising, as Vatican one of the richest organizations in the world. Vatican also was silent on the child abuse scandal by the priests. As a matter of fact the phedophilia was covered up and the priests were protected. Is his is what Jesus Christ wanted?
This is the time the mega rich corporations and individuals ( many of the became accumulated wealth by un scruple , not so honest means and exploitation)to share their wealth with the needy and not to be too worried about the stock prices. It will come back when things normalise. I don’t mean simple hand outs, but in a meaningful way.
In one of my previous comments, I have mentioned about the antimicrobial properties of copper and that we need to go back to using copper for frequently touched surfaces like doorknobs and handles, railings etc. Hope that the relevant authorities and the industrialists will take notice. There is adequate research on this subject.
