GMOA praises President for liquor ban, wants it extended to fag sales as well

When I read the above article I recollected experience about an incident 1972 in Russia

I was sent to an industrial site in a City called Orenburg in Russia with about 40 male and female students who were doing a major degree with me in Drilling and Exploration equipment for Oil and Gas

This city was full of hardcore Heafty Russians treated this brown-skinned small man and drank vodka quite often with a chaser  of dried pig fat or raw dried fish

Whole city administration collected money from shops in the corporate bank in the government-controlled economy to pay salaries to workers in the city. Most of the money collected is from Gastronom where they sell liquor – staple booze Stoleeshnaya Vodka

The provincial state wanted to curtail liquor consumption and decided  not to sell vodka for the last week of the month in summer

Money did not come to the bank and there were no funds to pay salaries

I assume that they hurriedly brought the money from another oblast and managed to pay a few days late ( obviously without printing!)

The funniest part is that all  the  perfume bottles sold in shops were grabbed by suffering workers to satisfy their unbearable thirst  Orenburg never tried that method anymore

My fear is that illegal liquor making is cracked down our addicts will resort to drinking something else  like thinner used in paint

Later I worked in the Norwegian oil sector and all my colleagues had an illicit winemaking distillery in the basement which is illegal in Norway and Finland where liquor prices were highest in the region

Norsk government kept blind eye though it is illegal considering the plight of the nation during lunch Bg severe winter

The Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA), yesterday, urged shop owners to stop the sale of cigarettes at least until the threat posed by COVID-19 was over. Secretary of the GMOA, Dr. Haritha Aluthge, issuing a media statement, commended the President for reversing the decision to open liquor stores.”The decision taken by the Commissioner-General of Excise to open bars was a mistake and we opposed that on Monday itself.

This was also a decision that was against our recommendations, to control the spread of COVID-19.”He said the GMOA had opposed the sale of liquor, during COVID-19 crisis, due to four main reasons: intoxicated people will not maintain necessary distance from each other, several people gather to drink alcohol, which in turn disrupts physical distancing, police and other agencies have to deal with the issues that are created by intoxication.

Kannangara Free Education Fund (KFEF) for Corvid-19 Rescue

April 22nd, 2020

Sarath Bulathsinghala

21 April 2020

Free Education recipients of Sri Lanka,

Brave Sri Lanka is weathering a storm of unprecedented proportions alongside other countries in the world – The Corvid-19 Pandemic. This is the gravest threat to the modern world in living memory. The human cost has been heartrending, the economic cost colossal and the full implications how we all will be affected in the future yet to be ascertained!

Our motherland, Sri Lanka is meeting this disaster headlong and the role played by the Presidential Task Force is commendable, to say the least! The relevant expertise has been husbanded and put into good use and the results are there for all to see. Today Sri Lanka ranks high alongside a host of wealthy countries who have resources impoverished Sri Lanka can only dream of! The day the world is out of the Corvid-19 jungle and when the cost is counted and the responses to the threat are judged in all its aspects and ranked, I hope to see Sri Lanka at the very top!

The dedication of all involved, The Presidential Task Force, the Health Officials, the Armed Forces, the Police and Intelligence Services Officials down to ordinary people giving a hand in anything they can contribute towards common effort is not surprising to us Sri Lankans. We have come together as one before during natural disasters, recurrent floods a tsunami as well as many manmade disasters since we gained independence from Britain. Here we are facing another disaster with equal vigour and dedication. It is time to give a hand to this noble task and stand proud and tall to be counted!

MOST OF US SRI LANKANS, EXCEPT FOR A VERY FEW WHETHER IN SRI LANKA OR CURRENTLY DOMICILED ELSEWHERE IN THE WORLD ARE RECIPIENTS OF FREE EDUCATION IN SRI LANKA, AT LEAST IN OUR FORMATIVE YEARS. AT THE OTHER END, WE RECEIVED EDUCATION UP TO UNIVERSITY LEVEL AND GOING FURTHER BECAME RECIPIENTS OF GOVERNMENT SCHOLARSHIPS OR THOSE OFFERED TO SRI LANKANS BY FOREIGN GOVERNMENTS. SOME RETURNED TO SRI LANKA AND OTHERS LIVE SCATTERED AROUND THE WORLD AS PER OUR WISHES AND CIRCUMSTANCES. WE ALL OWE SRI LANKA, OUR MOTHERLAND A DEBT OF GRATITUDE FOR THE FREE EDUCATION AND FREE HEALTHCARE WE RECEIVED AND THERE IS NO BETTER TIME THAN NOW DURING THE CORVID-19 PANDEMIC TO DO SO WHILE WE STILL CAN!

The way proposed here to is to institute a collection funddedicated to the memory of Hon CWW Kannangara – the father of Free Education in Sri Lanka.  The trials and tribulations of  Hon CWW Kannangara to bring about universal free education to all and sundry and the necessary legislation to do so in the 1930-40s through the then legislative process is now history and praiseworthy!

This fund is to be set up to collect funds for Sri Lanka’s current efforts to contain the Corvid-19 situation as well as eventually to bring the nation out of the pandemic to a healthy situation health-wise as well as economy wise.

Wherever we are in the world or in whatever station of life we find ourselves, we are in a position to contribute even in a token way, each according to his wish and ability to the Presidential Fund also called Corvid-19 Healthcare and Social Security Fund through the above mentioned Kannangara Free Education Fund (KFEF)

All recipients of Free Education in Sri Lanka are invited to give a hand to this noble objective. I propose a lively discussion through the Lankaweb Forum on  how exactly this may be done so that different views can be entertained and a suitable modus operandi agreed to transfer the funds to the COVID – 19 Healthcare and Social Security Fund with the least possible delay.

All the donations from the KFE Fund can be credited periodically to the special account opened under the number   85737373 at the Corporate Branch of the Bank of Ceylon.  Donations to COVID – 19 Healthcare and Social Security Fund have been exempted from taxes and foreign exchange regulations.

IN SUMMARY, WHAT IS PROPOSED HERE IS TO SET UP A FUND TO BE CALLED THE KANNANGARA FREE EDUCATION FUND (KFEF) THROUGH WHICH FUNDS TO THE ABOVE MENTIONED ACCOUNT OF THE COVID – 19 HEALTHCARE AND SOCIAL SECURITY FUND CAN BE TRANSFERRED TO BE SEEN AS COMING FROM THE GRATEFUL RECIPIENTS OF THE FREE EDUCATION IN SRI LANKA!

Plans underway to revive Sri Lanka’s Tourism Industry

Dirty sewage threatens Sri Lanka’s golden beaches

Colombo, April 22 (newsin.asia) — Sri Lanka Tourism plans for an early revival post-COVID-19, as the country starts opening up gradually from this week.

A major step was the Cabinet approval of the critical five-year global promotion initiative last week and plans are underway to finalize the Terms of Reference and appointment of the Procurement, Project and Technical Evaluation Committees; and the process will start when the time is right.

The approach focuses on consumer types and will allow for research supported global promotional campaign for Sri Lanka and a traveller-focused, evidence-based promotion strategy will be developed” Sri Lanka Tourism Chairperson Kimarli Fernando stated.

Sri Lanka Tourism is also currently working with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in a three-stage strategy of situation assessment, impact assessment and road mapping, to help get tourism industry back on its feet.

According to Data, there are 11,071 registered entities and individuals in the industry. Additionally, there are 2,669 accommodation facilities with 39,253 rooms. The industry also comprises of 34 associations including regional associations. In addition to the accommodation sector, there are associations of Travel Agents (DMC’s), Tour Guides and Drivers, inputs from whom are also essential going forward.

Tourism in Sri Lanka is an industry built on diversity and inclusivity, the input and collaboration of all tourism organisation is critical in the current situation, and would be of great benefit in planning the future. I look to all associations to provide us with their formal proposals to help Sri Lanka Tourism to complete an inclusive long-term strategy,” she said, adding that the Sri Lanka Tourism Alliance industry grouping has already submitted a proposal.

She said despite the uncertainty of the current situation, it is necessary to address day-to-day
matters, whilst maintaining the foresight to plan ahead.

COVID-19 also provides us with an opportunity for Sri Lanka Tourism to re-profile itself when the time is right. We can realign our focus towards higher-yielding tourists and a unique Sri Lankan experience; while ensuring the safety of travellers, our employees and citizens,” she added.

According to her, the Sri Lanka Tourism’s post-COVID-19 approach takes is in two stages – Stage 1 (December Season 2020) and Stage 2 (Post-December 2020).

Stage 1 focuses on the immediate recovery of the industry, which involves changes to the visa process to include mandatory testing, adjustments to the immigration process, airport entry, hotel transfer and certification of hotels to ensure health and safety of tourists, employees and the local community.

She pointed out that designated quarantine hotels need to be established with staff safety being paramount. With advice from the Ministry of Health, a detailed guideline will be released, and establishments will be audited to ensure compliance.

Rigorous health and safety activities incur costs and as such, it is recommended that a minimum pricing structure be established for accommodation, avoiding undercutting and the resulting race to the bottom.

In the spirit of global solidarity, we would also recommend an optional rapid test on departure at Sri Lanka Tourism cost, with results to be instantly messaged. This would provide assurance to tourists as they continue their travels elsewhere. When the airport is fully operational, it would be an opportunity to increase flights and
connectivity to Sri Lanka as an emerging transit hub in South Asia. This would be a learning experience from Singapore and Dubai’s example in building their tourism industry,” she added.

Sri Lanka Tourism Chairperson also stressed that the Government and the Central Bank have extended their fullest support to fast track industry recovery.

We look to the banks and financial institutions to support us and stand by our industry. We are personally contacting banks to assist our industry and currently working on how to support the industry for payment of salaries for the lower brackets and individuals with no safety net, through engagement with international funding agencies.”

She said COVID-19 was a severe blow to the industry which was still recovering after the Easter Sunday attacks last April. She said as the pandemic unfolded, the priority was the safety of tourists in Sri Lanka and on 12 th March when the World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 a pandemic, there were 76,224 foreign travellers in Sri Lanka.

Immediately, a 24/7 call centre was set up to assist tourists and with transportation issues in times of curfew, outbound flight tickets were allowed to be used as curfew passes to reach the airport. Another issue faced by foreign travellers was accommodation, with many hotels closing.

Alternative accommodation was found in other hotels and hostels and Sri Lanka Tourism liaised with the Foreign Ministry, embassies, airport authorities and airlines to facilitate safe departure.

We also launched The Tourist and Expatriate Support Centre” website which provides live updates, essential information and assistance to tourists and at present, there are 12,329 tourists in Sri Lanka.

She appreciated the resilience and solidarity within the industry and all stakeholders and said will focus on the rebuilding the tourism industry with their support.

Further, she stated that the Government’s preparedness for this pandemic is commendable and success in mitigating the impact gives Sri Lanka a chance to share the country’s deep-rooted history of wellness with the world.

As a nation, we have much to offer in terms of our tranquil tourist experiences, Hela Vedakhama, Indigenous Ayurveda, traditional spices, herbs and traditions. Our nation prides itself in its hospitality and focuses on wellbeing. In a post-pandemic world, there will be a greater appreciation for what our nation has to offer. We will soon once again be able to share the beauty of our country with foreign travellers across the globe and welcome them with a warm Ayubowan” Sri Lanka Tourism Chairperson said.

Health clearance may be needed for all future arrivals at Sri Lanka

April 22nd, 2020

Tourists arriving in Sri Lanka in the future must be armed with Covid-19 health clearance certificates approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) and be subjected to rapid testing at the airport, under a set of new proposals to revive tourism in the country.

Visitors must clear a WHO-designated health test two weeks prior to arrival and pass a rapid health test at the airport before they will be allowed to get to immigration counters.

Proposals for a new immigration process have been made to ensure arriving tourists have a clean bill of health

Under the proposed measures, future visitors will also need to book their accommodation in advance. Hotels will need to be certified as being Covid-19 prepared.

Detailing these measures in a webinar with other industry experts on Tuesday, Sri Lanka Tourism chairperson Kimarli Fernando added that a new visa process will also be implemented while visa-on-arrival will be terminated. The government is also deliberating the possibility of issuing five-year visas to encourage visitors to return.

Fellow speakers expressed hopes that Sri Lanka’s success in taming the viral spread – through a month-long countrywide lockdown and rigorous testing – will encourage travellers to regard Sri Lanka as a safe and healthy destination to visit once it is safe to do so.

So far, Sri Lanka has 309 cases, 100 recoveries and seven fatalities out of a population of 21.6 million people.

WHO says coronavirus came from an animal and was not made in a lab

April 22nd, 2020

Courtesy The Daily Mirror

The available evidence indicates coronavirus originated in animals in China late last year and was not manipulated or produced in a laboratory as has been alleged, the World Health Organization said Tuesday in a news briefing in Geneva.

“It is probable, likely, that the virus is of animal origin,” WHO spokeswoman Fadela Chaib said.

The global health body’s remarks follow confirmation from President Donald Trump last week that his administration is investigating whether coronavirus originated in a lab in the Chinese city of Wuhan, where the disease emerged.

Speculation about how coronavirus may have escaped the Wuhan Institute of Virology has circulated among right-wing bloggers and conservative media pundits.
One suggestion that the virus could be man-made and linked to a Chinese biowarfare program has been widely dismissed by scientists. Under a second scenario, the virus was naturally occurring – from a bat, say – but accidentally escaped the research facility because of poor safety protocols.

Both notions are based on circumstantial evidence such as the Wuhan Institute of Virology’s history of studying coronaviruses in bats, the lab’s proximity to where some of the infections were first diagnosed and China’s lax safety record in its labs.

Chaib said there remain questions over how precisely coronavirus jumped the species barrier to humans, but an intermediate animal host is the most likely explanation. She said the coronavirus, which causes the disease COVID-19, “most probably has its ecological reservoir in bats.”

The Trump administration accused the WHO of a catalog of errors over its response to the pandemic, including failing to adequately prepare for the outbreak, raising the alarm too slowly and naively accepting flawed information from China.

‘Almost like an eternity’: 3 months since US confirmed its first coronavirus case, what have we learned?

The WHO disputed all the allegations. Most public health experts don’t agree with the Trump administration’s specific criticisms of the WHO, although they acknowledge that the organization needs reform and lacks transparency. The Washington Post reported over the weekend that American officials working with the WHO sent back information to the White House about the spread of the virus in the crucial early days of January.

No need to deploy military from other countries to fight Covid-19 in Sri Lanka – Defence Secretary

Defence Secretary Maj. Gen. (Retd) Kamal Gunaratne said there was no necessity to seek assistance from other countries to deploy their military to contain the spread of coronavirus in Sri Lanka.

He said Sri Lankan Tri-Forces and the Police had already proved their capabilities in containing the spread of coronavirus.

Our military has already shown their expertise and professionalism in handling the emergency situation created under coronavirus threat,” he said.

The Defence Secretary said Sri Lanka would set an example to other countries, which were battling with coronavirus, on how a country could use its intelligence agencies with the military and health authorities effectively to control the spread of the highly infectious virus.

Sri Lanka’s intelligence agencies have been used to trace people who are closely associated with coronavirus positive patients and also their whereabouts to direct them to the 14-days quarantine process,” he said.

Referring to the recent news reports which claim that the Indian Army would be deployed in Sri Lanka to support the country’s effort to control the spread coronavirus, the Defence Secretary said that no such dialogue had been taken place between the two nations.

Indian media, quoting official sources, had reported today that India is readying separate rapid response teams for dispatching to friendly neighbouring countries like Bangladesh, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan in the spirit of its commitment to help them deal with the coronavirus pandemic.

Three-wheelers will be permitted to carry only two passengers due to the coronavirus risks, says Director-General of Health Services Dr. Anil Jasinghe.

He stated this during the media briefing of the National Operation Centre for Prevention of COVID -19 Outbreak (NOCPCO) this evening.

In the meantime, barber shops and salons, as well as food stalls located near hospitals that have low hygienic conditions, will remain closed until further notice, Dr. Jasinghe added.

Speaking further, he said, as the country is partly open for restoring normalcy in the civilian life, there are certain restrictions in place to be adhered to. It is imperative that general public continues the hygienic practices as the threat of the virus is yet to be eliminated, Dr. Jasinghe continued.

Health guidelines that were introduced must be followed at workplaces and public transport services, especially maintaining social distance and washing hands properly, Dr. Jasinghe noted.

A pandemic engulfs the globe with deaths nearing 200,000 and millions of confirmed cases documented. So far no one, not even the World Health Organization can firmly say what caused the virus, how the virus is spreading or what the cure for the virus is. Everyone is simply experimenting and making cautionary statements that often contradict previous statements made. There is no single golden rule and there is no universal solution or cure to address covid-19 and each country are on their own experimenting and rolling out best practices that have worked for them. In such a scenario, Sri Lanka opted to take the worst-case scenario to determine how it would expose covid-19 dead. It was not a decision based in favor of any community or against any community. Sadly, those that played the community-grievance card both locally & internationally has done great injustice to the Nation, the Government and to the Rest of the People of Sri Lanka. The damage as a result has resulted in Sri Lanka’s covid-19 success stories getting drowned in media releases claiming Sri Lanka is now targeting the Muslim minority. This damage caused by irresponsible & opportunistic individuals of one community is difficult to undo and will be forever unfairly flagged against Sri Lanka in the future.

Countries that boasted of superior health care systems, technology & equipment have found themselves in a precarious situation where hospitals cannot deal with the influx of patients, lack of health insurance deny hospitalization or medical attention, hospitals are without ventilators, face masks and other surgical equipment, confounding the situation, people are refusing to listen to their governments and fatalities among doctors and nurses are increasing further burdening the situation. The West accounts for close to 100,000 covid-19 deaths.

The WHO has been regularly issuing statements and guidelines which have been changing with each day some even contradicting original statements. But people have not made issue realizing that WHO too are also trying to deal with the situation. WHO guidelines issued to countries were meant to be benchmarks for countries to follow and around which they could devise their own decisions. Nowhere does WHO say it is mandatory to follow to the word what WHO gives as guidelines.

Sri Lanka too like all other countries naturally did not realize the magnitude of the danger of covid-19 and so initial decisions naturally had to be changed with time. It was in such a scenario considering that Sri Lanka too could see a rise in deaths that the decision to cremate all covid-19 dead was taken. It was a decision that was taken considering the nature of covid-19 dead un-embalmed decomposed fluids contaminating the ground water/soil and affecting the lives of the living. It was a decision that all others for a moment did not think was an affront to the dead or something declared against their community except for one community whose opportunistic leaders and wannabe politicians thought opportune to use as a form of bargaining tool to rouse their community against the government and show their might internationally, given the power of their 1.8billion number!

It was hurtful to the other communities who though realizing the opportunism in the demands did not wish to add to the government’s worries by making demands themselves on behalf of their communities.

Let us all realize that close to 200,000 people have died all over the world. They all belong to families who care for them and who feel for them and who are sad that their loved ones have suddenly died to an unknown virus. Many of the dead were as young as 13 some as old as 80. But whatever the age, they were people who are no less important. Inspite of WHO guidelines for the dead there is no country that is following 100% what the WHO has recommended.

Even in countries where a community is the majority diverse practices are being followed and applied. Though ritual practice mandates the dead to be buried in 24hours some of the countries where this community is in the majority have kept bodies in the morgue for over 2 weeks, some villagers are refusing to allow their town cemetery to be used to bury covid-19 dead, some governments are not even allowing washing or dressing the body or even taking the dead body to the home or place of religious worship. So none of the countries where this community is in the majority are practicing to the word any of the rituals they practice. Most of these countries are even hiding covid-19 deaths by not disclosing the cause of death. In so duplicitously burying covid-19 dead in town cemeteries only time will show the damage to these towns and those innocents who may contract the virus when rains and other natural disasters occur.

How fair was it to only project globally the notion that one particular community was purposely being denied their funeral ritual? This is hurtful to the other communities who have also lost their loved ones and who have had to sacrifice funeral rituals to their dead by putting the interest of the living before their dead family member. These families must no doubt be saddened that they could not give their dead family member a fitting farewell but they have come to terms that their actions have been in the best interest of the Country and the living. Why is it difficult for this community to think this way? Or rather why do leaders of this community always think that they can play the community card and get their way?

In Sri Lanka we saw 7 deaths. 3 out of the 7 were of the same community while 2 deaths were Buddhist and 2 deaths were Catholic. Catholics generally bury their dead. Catholics believe soul lives after death depending on the righteous life led (Heave, Hell or Purgatory) Funerals are generally held in Church, led by a Priest who delivers sermon, there is a funeral mass, procession, sprinkling of Holy Water, songs & prayer, readings from Bible, there is a dress code, Priest officially commits the body to the earth and traditionally Catholic funerals are not held on Sundays. None of these rituals could be performed on the 2 covid-19 dead but no one from that community complained or commenced an international media campaign against Sri Lanka.

2 Buddhists died of covid-19. For Buddhists death is a transition from one life to the next on a journey to Nirvana. Death is a reminder of impermanence of life. The body is brought home, family & friends visit to pay homage. Cremation or burial is a personal choice. On the day of the funeral Buddhist theros arrive and are offered Pansakula (robes)/mataka vastra Pooja (offering cloth on behalf of the deceased), merit is transferred (Idam me natinam hotu) followed by anumodana (thanksgiving) then there is the pouring the water of dedication. The Pansakula rite has been followed since Buddha’s time and is an integral part of a Buddhist funeral.

None of these rituals coming down from over 2500 years could be performed on the 2 covid-19 dead victims but Buddhists did not complain or carry out an international campaign against the government.

Imagine how these families would have felt if the Government gave in to the demands of one community totally disregarding the rituals of the other communities that they compromised because it was a necessity!

However, since January, deaths have occurred of all communities and apart from the 7 covid-19 dead, all of the families have either cremated or buried their dead following all rituals. Nevertheless, with curfew and lockdowns and requirement for social distancing even ordinary rituals have had to be amended to suit the situation. As such an ordinary funeral has meant that it is not possible for people to travel to the funeral home to pay last respects – it is only the immediate family who have had to run through the funeral rituals among themselves. So everyone has had to adjust their lives. But the notion presented to the whole world is that Sri Lanka is purposely targeting one community – which is totally wrong and totally unfair by the other communities who are accepting the decisions of the Government and not trying to make things difficult for the government.

Relevant to this discussion is the example from India. India has a central government and state governments. The Centre issues a general circular to all State Governments and the State Governments in turn issue directives based on what they deem is appropriate for the state.

Mumbai is the capital of Maharashtra State which has a population of 114.2million. 13million are Muslims. Capital Mumbai has 2.5million Muslims. Maharashtra State has 4669 covid-19 cases with 251 deaths. As of 20th April Mumbai has 2,798 confirmed cases and 131 deaths.

The Mumbai Corporation of Greater Mumbai issued a circular on 30 March 2020 declaring that covid-19 dead bodies were to be cremated.

All the dead bodies of Covis-19 patients should be cremated at the nearest crematorium irrespective of religion”

It also cites the penal code for action to be taken against anyone going against order.

The other letter attached is one sent by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai to the Trustees of a Muslim cemetery while reminding of the circular of the State, clearly states that the Trustees must take full responsibility for spread of virus to neighborhood. The MCGM also informing Trustees of complaints received regarding covid-19 bodies from other neighborhoods being brought to site and informs that they shall not accept any such covid-19 dead bodies for burial outside of their neighborhood and reminds the Trustees of the penal code action to be applied if circular is flouted.

How come these circulars which were applicable to 13million Muslims from the Maharashtra state did not result in the uproar that Sri Lanka witnessed? How come the level of lobbying that continues to take place even now does not take place in India? How come the international media are not drawing attention to these State circulars? Sri Lanka has only had 3 covid-19 dead from the Muslim community but the notion projected to the world is that all Muslims are being cremated. A version that is false and fabricated and for which the Muslim community in particular the notorious set of politicians and some wannabe future Parliamentarians are responsible. It is natural that when facts are brought forward their immediate reaction is to subtly re-divert attention speaking about cooperating and supporting the government while beneath the surface lobbying and other tactics are pursued. They should not think the general public is ignorant to these chameleon tactics.

At this juncture, it is true that some unfortunate people have perished from covid-19 and whatever race or religion they belong to, all of them could not get the farewell they deserve but that situation is relevant for all of the deceased and not just one community and this is what this particular community needs to accept and realize. It is not that they don’t it is just that their leaders want to always fish in troubled waters trying to gain some publicity for themselves. We have seen in the countries where the strictest forms of religion is practiced the natives of these villagers would not even allow a dead covid-19 corpse to be brought to their village for burial not even when the victim was a doctor who treated them because they realized that the chances of the entire village, the children and elders getting it was far too important to ignore.

Covid-19 is teaching the people many lessons – let this be one, not to think of one’s community only.

Amnesty International: LTTE says “Hoole is a Fool”

April 21st, 2020

LTTE declared him anti-Tamil and anti-Hindu…. Sri Lankan’s question him on his bias and lack of integrity. What can we comprehend of his actions? Let’s go back a bit to understand. Amnesty International on 12 April 2006 issued a release regarding Ratnajeevan Hoole. It was issued immediately after his appointment as Vice Chancellor of Jaffna University and following repeated death threats by LTTE claiming to return his body ‘headless in a box’ if he takes up position as Vice Chancellor. The Jaffna Students Union put posters calling him ‘anti-Tami, anti-Hindu and not ‘loyal to the Tamil people’. In fact, LTTE websites ran articles on Hoole titled ‘Who is this Fool’. This speaks volumes about his actions thereafter!

Let us first look at what the Amnesty document is trying to convey.

https://www.amnesty.org/download/Documents/72000/asa370102006en.pdf

Amnesty declares they ‘fear for safety’ of Hoole & his family not by Sinhalese but by the LTTE after his appointment as Vice Chancellor, Jaffna University. Who was threatening Hoole? A front organization of the LTTE called People’s Uprising Force (Makkal Eluchip Padai) presumably had telephoned Hoole on 11 March 2006 warning him not to enter Jaffna university or return ‘headless in a box’. On 12 March 2006 he is threated with assault by the Jaffna University Students Union head if he steps into the University. A month earlier the President of the University Council received a letter from the Students Union that the VC has to be someone loyal to the Tamil people. Obviously Hoole was not wanted by the LTTE and Tamils supporting LTTE.

So this Tamil Professor, living in Peradeniya, functioning as the VC of Jaffna University receives 2 threats – one from an LTTE front and another from the Tamil student union leader and a certificate that he is not wanted as VC Jaffna University as ‘he is not loyal to the Tamil people’. So the Tamils too regard Hoole as someone ‘against the Tamil race’. Hoole finds his photo pasted across campus walls too. So Hoole was alleged to be ‘anti-Tamil, anti-Tamil race and anti-Hindu’. Hoole was a Christian. All this is not declared by Sinhalese but by Tamils themselves.

Amnesty document adds that a website operated by the LTTE – nitharsanam.com on 12 March 2006 posted a photo of Hoole titled ‘Who is this Fool’ claiming ‘Army spy appointed VC’ and now Hoole says he’s afraid of Sri Lanka’s Army Commander. Unbelievable!

The LTTE website according to Amnesty International links Hoole to the 1990 publication of The Broken Palmyra which criticized LTTE.

The website on 18 March 2006 published another article ‘Who is this Fool – Part 2” again accusing him of being connected to the University Teachers for Human Rights run by Hoole’s brother Rajan Hoole which had documented abuses by LTTE but tends to twist and turn stories to its advantage. UTHR also lied about the supposed death of K. Thyabaran who was found very much alive by the Dhanushkodi Police, India.

According to Amnesty on 22 March 2006 Hoole’s daughter Anbini receives an anonymous call threatening to ‘kill her younger brother and chop him into pieces’ if father Hoole takes post as VC Jaffna University. More calls were received from the PUF.

Hoole ran to report the threats to Norwegian embassy in Colombo & the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) who was monitoring the 2002 cease fire agreement.

What is really interesting about this Amnesty international document is that Hoole also received calls from the TNA on behalf of LTTE asking Hoole to resign.

Also poignant is Amnesty report stating ‘LTTE-affiliated Tamil National Alliance’ – that rests our case about LTTE and TNA link!

What is strange about this Amnesty international communique is that it is recommending 3 appeals

  1. To express grave concern about the death threats issued to Hoole and family
  2. Asking LTTE to guarantee that Hoole would not be attacked
  3. Asking LTTE to publicly state it will adhere to international humanitarian law which prohibits targeting of civilians.

Its communique lists addresses to where appeals are to be sent

  • LTTE Peace Secretariat in Kilinochchi
  • LTTE representative organization the World Tamil Movement in Canada

And copies to be sent to

  • SLMM office Colombo
  • Diplomatic representatives in Sri Lanka

It was President Mahinda Rajapakse who appointed Hoole as Vice Chancellor of the Jaffna University on 9 March 2006. But his appointment was opposed by the pro-LTTE Jaffna Students Union and more importantly by the TNA.

Wikileaks US embassy communique on Hoole – 20 March 2006 https://wikileaks.org/plusd/cables/06COLOMBO428_a.html

This is what Hoole told the Island Newspaper when interviewed – http://www.island.lk/2006/03/23/news2.html “I have received several anonymous telephone calls threatening me with death, if I assume duties as the Jaffna VC. They said if I come they will assault me. I want to contribute the development in the Northern Province. I already have proposals and plans to establish an Engineering Faculty in Jaffna. So, I plead and ask the students and the LTTE to come forward and hear my explanations.”

Fast forward to 2020 April, Hoole is today playing a different tune.

Is he still regarded as ‘anti-Tamil’ ‘anti-Hindu’ ‘not loyal to the Tamil people’ well the man who feared the LTTE fled Sri Lanka for US/Canada on 20 April 2006. An article by Carlo Fonseka to the Island claims Hoole wished to return to Sri Lanka after defeat of LTTE in May 2009 & Carlo Fonseka had on behalf of the Hooles discussed with President Mahinda Rajapakse to support his return. The Hooles returned to Sri Lanka on 2 September 2010 and President Mahinda reinstated Hoole on 13 September 2010 but administrative hiccups and delays & Hoole was not appointed VC of Jaffna University.

Note how Mahinda Rajapakse played a role in Hoole’s appointment and return to Sri Lanka – so much for returning gratitude!

An article by Hoole against EPDP head resulted in a police complaint and Hoole gave statement to police in August 2011, though summoned to appear in Kayts court by Magistrate, Hoole sent lawyer instead of appearing personally and fearing issuance of arrest warrant for contempt of court Hoole fled Sri Lanka for the 2nd time. http://island.lk/index.php?page_cat=article-details&page=article-details&code_title=25194

It is interesting to know who requested Hoole’s return after regime change in 2015 resulting in being propped into the Elections Commission. But, there has to be a link given the manner of his actions coming nowhere near what he claims to be. A closer look at the Elections Commission 2017-2020 strategy https://elections.gov.lk/web/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/Strategic-Plan-2017-En.pdf brings to questions his very role & actions.

Some questions for Hoole from the General Public

  • Are you or are you not a dual citizen? If so, bragging about ethics and integrity how come you have accepted to be a member of the supposed to be independent Election Commission if you are a dual citizen?
  • On what grounds are you making public insinuations against Sri Lanka’s Army Commander who has not been found guilty of any charges in any court of law? Isnt this racism and racial profiling publicly. Shouldn’t you make a public apology to the Army Commander for this! Would you like it if anyone writes publicly calling you a terrorist and claiming fear to appearing for a meeting with you?
  • How can you use social media to castigate high profile officials publicly?
  • As a member of the 3 Member Election Commission –  you are supposed to agree or disagree behind closed doors but publicly stick to the common agreement concluded upon – you are not to be finding fault or making public comments against decisions of the commission – if you are so against the decisions without making a public spectacle of yourself, why not honorably resign & leave the commission!
  • You are only flouting the constitution – Under article 103(9) All members of the commission shall be deemed to be public servants within the meaning and for the purpose of Chapter IX of the Penal Code.” Therefore, a public servant has no business to be berating another public servant in public!
  • Apologize for HATE SPEECH & RACISM – Your berating of high profile public figures in public tantamount to HATE SPEECH & INSULTS and defaming their character in public without any evidence.
  • You are biased – The public will continue to question your bias by the unbecoming manner for a public official to challenge the President who dissolved Parliament by filing a FR while serving in public office in 2019 against the dissolving of Parliament in favor of the government that appointed you as a member of the election commission.
  • Why were you silent? – If Hoole is so concerned about constitutional acts and unconstitutional acts – why were there no objections by him when Ranil was appointed PM without removing the sitting PM, or when the CJ Mohan Pieris was unceremoniously removed from office simply by not allowing him to enter his chambers. Why didn’t he make a noise to demand action against the Bond Scam robbers & the appointment of a foreigner as Governor of the Central Bank?

THE PRESIDENT A TREMENDOUS ASSET TO THE NATION.

April 21st, 2020

LANKAWEB EDITORIAL.

The tremendous asset that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has proved to be both in the past, as well as today, is portrayed visibly through his actions and words which resonate to a great extent and permeate the minds of his respectful subjects – the citizens of Sri Lanka irrespective of their backgrounds or origins.

Today they live in relative trouble and worry-free environment both in the face of the COVID19 Virus and the terrorist threat where fortifications have been set in place comprehensively to safeguard the people.

When  says ” he will not leave any room for any form of extremism, or violence from any extremists to be unleashed on the Sri Lankan people again and assured that the true perpetrators responsible for the Easter Sunday attacks will be identified and brought before the law.”

it is a comforting thought for the Nation and an object lesson perhaps for the rest of the world to emulate.

On the first anniversary of Easter Sunday attacks as quoted from a media report “The President stated that exactly a year ago, on April 21st, 2019 a group of extremists, bent on a macabre agenda unleashed a sequence of terror targeting Catholic churches and tourist hotels.

I deeply empathize with the families of all those who lost their lives and sustained grave injuries, the Catholic community and entire Sri Lankan citizenry who were terrorized by these horrifying massacres,” he said.

Around 270 people were killed and about 500 were gravely injured in Easter Sunday attacks. Some who survived, later succumbed to their injuries after months of suffering. Some others will be disabled for life Even though Catholics were targeted, this was a terrorist attack against all Sri Lankan citizens.” This heinous crime against humanity needs to be condemned by all without any tolerance towards this extremist ideology”  in the words of the President as he continues to pilot the Nation at its helm in an equitable manner dispelling all apprehension of a Nation once gripped in the dread of terrorism and today facing all the perils of a deadly virus and directing his team in his inimitably disciplined manner towards dealing with it.

He has also referred to the salient reality that “the mechanisms that were in place to ensure national security were once compromised and dismantled. and that when anarchy prevails, it is only natural for extremism, terrorism and all kinds of violence to raise its despicable head.”

The world today knows that it was through the concerted efforts of his brother Mahinda- then President and his efforts as Defence Secretary at the time that the evil of Tamil Tiger Terrorism was eliminated in its entirety to which the Nation should be unquestionably grateful for all time.

Today as a result of the President’s judicious handling of the issues confronting him he has won the admiration and respect of many world leaders and may his regime be long-lived as he continues to guide the people of Sri Lanka.towards her ultimate destiny.

Election Phobia of SJBs and their cohorts – Part II

April 21st, 2020

By : A.A.M.NIZAM – MATARA

Continuing with his opinions the diaspora proxy Sumanthiran said that the COVID-19 threat could last for several months, if not a year or two. In such a context, it is absolutely essential that all arms of government function effectively to meet this threat. Parliament must immediately deal with the question of laws needed to meet the new threat. Even if the State of Emergency is declared by the President under the Public Security Ordinance, that must be approved by Parliament. Previously during the period of war, Parliament met under Article 70(7) to extend Emergency. If Emergency Regulations are promulgated, they must be laid before Parliament without delay…

Referring to North and East he said that the situation in the North and the East is precarious at the moment and some people are nearing starvation. Local authorities are the best-equipped bodies to deal with this situation are not being allowed to uplift the funds they have saved and kept precisely for situations like this! I have spoken to the Governor of the North while R. Sampanthan had spoken to the Governor of the Eastern province, but so far, they have not granted their consent. Either the government must grant relief to the most vulnerable sections or at least allow the local government institutions to do that. He said that the local authorities in the North and East have emergency funds in fixed deposits for situations such as this. However, they need the concurrence of the Commissioner for Local Government (CLG) to uplift or withdraw them. So far, the Governors of both provinces have refused to permit the CLGs to uplift those funds.

The prat-fallen Janatha Vikurthi Peramuna too has opposed holding of elections and it is merely in fear that their popularity percentage will further decrease if elections are held.  The leader of this Vikurthi Peramuna who is now called Mr. 3% has called EC head for an appointment to discuss the polls.  A former MP of this outfit Bimal (Biyagulu) Ratnayake has said that the government must not use the election in South Korea as an excuse for holding the parliamentary polls before the COVID-19 crisis was over. He has said that the South Korean health authorities have issued a fresh warning that the next two weeks would be crucial after their election on April 15. So those who speak of holding elections, talking of the Korean experience, should take all factors that prevailed during the elections in that country should take into consideration,” he has said.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa has issued a comprehensive message covering the Corona Virus situation in the country. Steps being taken by the government to control the spread of the epidemic and on the success that has been achieved, the sabotage being made by the opposition to curtail food, essential items, and medicine distribution, and on the election phobia of the opposition,

The prime minister says that the Coronavirus pandemic hit countries like the USA, India, and Bangladesh in a situation where their economies had been experiencing strong growth for years. In contrast, Sri Lanka has had to face this crisis in a state of economic ruin. During the five years of yahapalana misrule from 2015 to 2019, our debt burden increased by 71%, the Rupee lost one-third of its value and economic growth had plummeted to 2.7%. Furthermore, though we had won the presidency in November 2019 and formed a government, we did not have a majority in Parliament and were not able to get a vote on account passed even to pay off the previous government’s debts to suppliers of fertilizer and medicine.

The financial powers vested in the President under Article 150(3) of the Constitution were the only saving grace in this situation. It was with all these debilitating disadvantages that we had to face the Coronavirus pandemic.

The Prime Minister explains that after the first Coronavirus patient was discovered on 11 March, we introduced a raft of measures to control the disease including early detection, isolation treatment of patients, quarantine for those exposed to risk, the tracing of patients’ contacts and social distancing measures. An operation like this has not been seen in our lifetimes. Curfews lasting for weeks on end had to be imposed to prevent the spread of the disease.

He states that people unable to go out of their homes had to be supplied with essentials like foodstuffs, medicines, and even cash throughout the country. Aid had to be provided to low-income earners. The produce of paddy and vegetable farmers and fishermen had to be bought to keep the production process going on. The fact that all these tasks were dealt with simultaneously at short notice is nothing less than a managerial miracle and today, the whole world acknowledges Sri Lanka’s success in containing the coronavirus pandemic.

Commenting with gratitude about the contributions made and being made by our public officials he says that the President’s leadership in this regard has to be commended. Our government doctors, nurses, and health service workers have come to the attention of the entire world. The skill and dedication of the intelligence services in tracing the contacts of patients, the efficiency of the armed forces in implementing quarantine and lockdown measures have prevented the spread of the disease. The Police and government officials at all levels have all contributed to the success of the anti-Coronavirus campaign. Today, our country is one of the safest places to be in the whole world. We have achieved this despite an economy that had been driven into the ground, and an unpatriotic and opportunistic opposition bent on undermining our government at every turn.

The Prime Minister claims with disdain that the opposition leader tried to sabotage the anti-coronavirus campaign at the very outset by personally encouraging protests against the quarantine process. Then they tried to undermine government services including the health service with the argument that the President had no power to allocate funds for government services after the dissolution of Parliament and now they say that the Gazette dissolving Parliament should be rescinded the as the new parliament has to meet before the 2nd of June, and the parliamentary election cannot be held before that.

He reminds us that the yahapalana government delayed local government elections by nearly three years. Their attempt to postpone that election indefinitely by moving courts failed only because the Elections Commission declared they would hold elections to the institutions that were not involved in litigation. With just days to go for the dissolution of the provincial councils in 2017, the yahapalana government changed the provincial councils’ elections system to prevent elections from taking place. When the Attorney General held that a two-thirds majority in Parliament was required to pass that amendment, they bartered policy for votes in the corridors of Parliament to obtain the required majority.

As a result of that unprincipled political horse-trading, the local government elections law which was passed on 25 August 2017 has 40% proportional representation whereas the provincial councils’ elections law passed four weeks later has 50% proportional representation! Sri Lanka is also the only democratic country in the world where political parties petitioned the Supreme Court to get the declaration of a parliamentary election annulled. The present scramble to have the parliamentary elections put off is a continuation of that deplorable past.

The Prime Minister emphasizes that things have to come back to normal sooner or later and in eleven of the 25 administrative districts, there have been no coronavirus patients at all. In another seven districts, there have been only one or two patients and five to seven patients in two more districts. Only five districts have a high incidence of coronavirus patients.

In the conclusion of the message, the Prime Minister explains that on 2 March the President dissolved Parliament and fixed 25 April for the poll and 14 May for the first meeting of the new Parliament. Ten days later, when the first Coronavirus patient was found, the President did not have the power to postpone the poll. Under Section 24(3) of the Parliamentary Elections Act No: 1 of 1981, when the poll cannot be held on the day fixed by the President, the Elections Commission is mandatorily required to fix another day for the poll. They have no power to postpone the poll without fixing another date. Such mandatory legal requirements cannot be ignored on the basis of speculation as to what may or may not happen weeks and months into the future. The Elections Commission should first fulfill its duties under Section 24(3) and thereafter take up for discussion any outstanding issues.

Infuriated and dismayed by the above-referenced statement of the Prime Minister which binds the Election Commission with no room to allow SJBandits and their cohorts to play around and demand further for postponement of elections, force the EC to attend to their constitutional responsibility, the SJBandits have issued a statement-making various baseless, illusory and fanciful allegations completely forgetting the hardships forced upon the people by the Sirisena/Ranil regime in which the SJBandits and their cohorts were the kingmakers.

The very first and horrendous act by the despicable regime was quisling Mangala Samaraweera blindly co-sponsoring the American initiated UNHRC resolution No. 30/1 without the consent of the President and without informing the Cabinet of Ministers. This nincompoop didn’t care that the said resolution was inconsistent with our constitution and it violated the sovereign rights of our country.  What he wanted was to be in the good book of the Amer4icans.

Their ravage activities during the 4 ½ years of Black Rule in the country included unprecedented corruptions and gross misuse of power practiced by them on a level never seen in any country in the world, which  included sale of valuable national assets and making arrangements to sell all Sri Lankan assets and subjecting several future generations to slavery under foreign countries, allowing the terrorist diaspora elements and despicable tyrant western nations cabal to witch hunt our gallant war heroes and national liberators and  imprison them and enacting legislations to hand them over to war crime tribunals, depriving pension rights and disability allowances for disabled war heroes and forcing them to spend days and days in front of Fort Railway Station and shuttle to and fro the Presidential Secretariat,  completely denying the liberty for our war heroes to travel abroad, officially robbing from the Tils in the Temples which had never happened in  the 3,000 year old history of Sri Lanka, arrest and imprisonment of joint opposition politions, their family members and supporters and even much venerated Buddhist priests and holding tjhem in remand prison for several months on cocked up charges, allowing the racists in the North to destroy ancient archeological sites and prevent any new settlements there and even deny carrying out of funeral rights of Buddhist priests in that part of that country , MPs poisoning the innocent participants of opposition rallies by distributing poisoned milk packets, making Sri Lanka second only to Mexico in consumption, distribution of drugs and allowing drug peddlers to sell drugs and narcotics freely to school children, Ministers and MPs of the government without any hesitation and shame demanding huge commissions from contractors and potential foreign investor, suspending work on all ongoing projects launched by Mahinda Rajapaksa government and thereby de-employing and retrenching from work several thousand innocent persons,  until they were forced to recommence work on these projects following demands for huge amounts of compensations were demanded by the foreign partners of the said projects.

The Speaker of Parliament contrary to the much respected and admirable personalities who hel this hallowed office in the past, allegedly was the worst Speaker ever had by Sri Lanka who appointed the leader of a minority party in the opposition as the Leader of the Opposition, a leader of a party that had only 6 MPs in the parliament as the Chief Opposition Whip, and making this individual a member of the Special Advisory Committee functioned from Prime Minister’s Office and allocating most of the debating time reserved for opposition was allocated to this individual and severely restricted debate times for the joint opposition and continuously and arrogantly interrupted the speeches of the joint opposition members and made the parliament similar to  a fish market, government MPs brought weapons to parliament with the reported concurrence of the worst Speaker and when it was reported to him his response was that he doesn’t mind even if one or two murders take place in the parliament,  this overtly biased Speaker misused his powers and made political appointments to the so-called independent commissions and Parliament Committees – For instance appointment of vicious Tamil separatist Ranjan B.Hoole as a member of the Election Commission, terrorist proxy Sumanthiran as the Chairman of the Higher Posts Approval Committee and so on.

They deliberately ignored credible foreign intelligence reports about the Easter Sunday suicide bomb attacks, sharing the information only with Ministers and government MPs and thereby causing the death of over 500 innocent people and injuring a similar number of whom some are still undergoing treatment, taking no action against a government Minister who has held discussions with the main suicide bomber and who has made a hospital visit to see the brother of the main suicide bomber as it had been shown in several video clips, adopting the Horaage ammagen pena ahanawaa” (seeking divine revelation from the mother of the thief) appointing this alleged Minister as a member of the Parliamentary Select Committee  appointed to investigate on the Easter Sunday Carnage

Even many of them who entered Parliament as bicycle politicians wearing rubber slippers got infected with back pains and wanted to have super luxury vehicles worth several hundred million dollars and even for the travel of their spouses.  If they have continued to be the members of parliament further they may have even requested personal helicopters.  They were receiving millions of rupees as various allowances which included attendance allowance, office maintaining allowance for Colombo and the same for their electorates, in addition to various other perks and privileges.

Some of these bicycles and betel and laveria seller politicians became big businessmen and business partners of major companies. Many of them were well-known drug peddlers and wine shop owners. When the import of drugs was found in containers that brought other goods to State institutions no investigations were carried out to take legal actions against those responsible.

They ruined the agriculture sector, suspended the fertilizer subsidy and encouraged the paddy farmers to grow maize or other crops or fill the paddy lands and sell them for building/house construction. Cultivators of pepper, cinnamon, and tea were made paupers by importing low-grade qualities from Vietnam, Kenya, and some other countries and exporting adulterated products and gaining he profits while depleting the prices for the local products drastically.

Nepotism and political favoritism reigned high.  Several Ministers filled their Ministries and the departments under their Ministries with their spouses, paramours, siblings, and even distant relations.  They included Lakshman kiriella, Arjuna Ranatunga, Rishad Bathiudeen, Rauf Hakeem, etc.

Promises made in the budgets were never implemented.  Dreams held by A/L students to get personal Tabs passed as bad dreams.  One thing they encouraged was creating boozers in the country.  Mangala Samaraweera even attempted to sell liquor to women, employ girls in night clubs and Bars and keep Wine Shops opened on Poya and other Holidays.  He said that keeping these shops closed on holidays deprives the freedom of foreign tourists.

People were made to lose the trust they held in our Courts and the judicial system. Ranjan Ramanayake’s recorded tapes vividly expose how politically motivated cases were filed, how judges were threatened and were forced to spin their judgments etc.

When the presidential election was to be announced, probably getting the information from their proxy Hoole in the EC, many Ministers made quick appointments in Departments and Corporation coming under their Ministries.  Only such appointments in the Kallathoni descendant Ganeshan Ministry and National Savings Bank under the Finance ministry got suspended/cancelled by the EC due to delays caused by delay in issuing appointment letters.  In addition to this, there were several hundred people getting salaries without work from Sajith Premadasa’s Ministry (appointed on the basis security if tall and labourer if short”) and nearly one hundred persons as road construction including some Buddhist monks from Kiriella’s Highways Ministry.

Plantation laborers were made to stage demonstrations demanding salary increases for several months and many disgruntled plantation youths left the Estates for labor jobs in Colombo and other towns..

University students and their parents who joined in their demonstrations presenting reasonable and justifiable demands and who are destined to be our future leaders, doctors, engineers, scientists, professionals and administrators were inhumanly harassed, beaten, subjected to high pressure water cannon assaults, tear gassed and many were hospitalized with severe injuries. These assaults were carried out on the insistence of certain prominent rogue Ministers.

The government was completely appeasing the Sambandan/Sumanthiran cabal.  Several Bills were passed pleasing this duo fulfilling the commitments that had been made under UNHRC resolution 30/1. Sometimes people were even wondering whether these two vagabonds were the President and the Prime Minister of this country. Video clips on Parliamentary proceedings showed once Sumanthiran walking up to the Leader of the House Lakshman Kiriella and strongly instructing him on certain things and the Ministers and government MPs staying ‘bakan nilagena’ (nikan valaafena – just watching motionless.  The only thing these racist duos could not get achieved was to get a new constitution, a federal and secular constitution adopting repealing the existing constitution although the draft was ready and that was because to adopt a new constitution it is mandatory to have it approved with a two-thirds majority in Parliament followed by a referendum.  However, they would have made an alternate arrangement and got it approved similar to what they did in respect of postponing the provincial council elections if parliament was not dissolved early by the idealistic President.

These are some of the misdeeds carried out by the previous government and those who were mainly responsible for these acts are now in the fold of Shameless Jabbering Bandits (SJB) group and among their cohort.  Most of them are uncertain of returning to Parliament from the ensuing elections and suffering from an acute election phobia and hence desperately attempting to reconvene the parliament to complete its full term and become eligible for pension rights.

Sunday Times Political Editor revealed in his column week that Basil Rajapaksa, General Secretary of the ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Nidhas Sandanaya, told them that he doesn’t want to comment on the parliamentary elections as it is a matter for the Election Commission. However, he was surprised by the position taken by some parties which had earlier introduced legislation to put off Provincial Council elections. They also periodically put off local government elections. He has further stated that these parties they fear for elections know that the government has ensured almost near normalcy on the virus situation.  Referring to South Korea, he has pointed out that they held elections there and the turn out despite their being affected badly by the Covid-19 pandemic was more than their previous poll.

The news item stated that Mr. Basil Rajapaksa recently told Election Commission Chairman Deshapriya to avoid resorting to any action that would institutionalize the present stalemate” and then blame them for the situation.” In other words, the news item explained the President’s Special Envoy was making clear that an indefinite delay in the conduct of a parliamentary election would mean the indefinite continuance of the Presidency without an elected government and it means no Parliament and priority matters like amendments to the constitution will then be difficult. In this setting, some Buddhist prelates have even said that President Rajapaksa should continue in office without worrying about elections.

The strong messages are given to Deshapriya by the Prime Minister and after that Mr. Basil Rajapaksa have put him in an awkward position unable to dodge anymore despite reluctance from the pro-separatist and racist member in the Commission Ratnajeevan Hoole and forced him to hold discussions with health authorities, security services, district administrators who will act as returning officers and issue a gazette notification announcing a new date for holding the elections.

Fortunately, we will now be electing a new government on Saturday 20th June.  I hope it will be a government with a two third majority and only such a government will be able to reverse many of the damages that had been caused by the so-called yamapaalana government during the 4 ½ years of Black Rule.

Question President Sirisena Over Easter Sunday Terrorist Attack

April 21st, 2020

Dilrook Kannangara

President Sirisena was the president, commander in chief, defence minister and the head of the national security council when the Easter Sunday terrorist attack happened. That is a very long list of highly responsible positions concerned with national security. He must take responsibility for the lapse in security provided to the people and he is answerable. He must be questioned over it.

The attack didn’t happen out of the blue. Indications were many. 34 Sri Lankan Muslims trained to become terrorists in Syria and elsewhere and it was discussed in parliament. It was widely known that they were returning home after a beating in Syria. Local intel units repeatedly warned the government about the impending attack. Indian, Turkish and US intel agencies also warned of it. In fact, the government did heed the warning and informed all MPs and their security detail about it. Thawheed Jamaath and other controversial groups were operating in the island freely. Even Tablighi Jamaath which rose to notoriety recently has a very large following in Sri Lanka. Apart from face-save measures, nothing was done against them. How many more of these are there?

Former police chief and the defence secretary were arrested over it but they were mere instruction-takers. They acted according to instructions. Unless justice takes its course, this won’t be the last of offenders. All offending parties must pay for the crime.

April 21st, 2020

Nava Thakuria

Guwahati: Journalists’ Forum Assam (JFA) expresses concern over the infection to a large number of media persons while they went on reporting about novel corona virus outbreak across India. It terms the news of over 50 journalists turning Covid-19 positive in a single city as horrible and requests every scribe on the ground to follow the necessary guidelines.

Local reports reveal that at least 53 media persons including reporters, video journalists, news photographers in Mumbai were tested positive for the deadly virus. Chennai reported two cases of media

Covid-19 positive and Bhopal witnessed one scribe with the corona infection. All affected journalists were reportedly sent for quarantine.

While appealing to all working journalists for maintaining health protocols in the time of a pandemic, we also urge the government to extend the benefits of Rs 50 lakh insurance cover to media persons on duty hours in the line of health professionals, sanitation workers, police personnel etc,” said a statement issued by JFA president Rupam Barua and secretary Nava Thakuria.

The news media, which has been exempted from the nationwide lockdown to carry out its duty, carries the obligation to inform the people about the Covid-19 pandemic along with the authority’s efforts to combat the catastrophe, JFA preaches the scribes to follow  some recognised guidelines (like those included in the Committee to Protect Journalists site www.cpj.org/2020/02/cpj-safety-advisory-covering-the-coronavirus-outbr.php

or https://cpj.org/coronavirus_safety_advisory_assamese.pdf) for their own safety and securities.

As a result, aquaponics uses only a small amount of water compared to traditional soil based farming and zero artificial fertilisers or pesticides.

US offers to help fight terrorism and the Catholic church reiterates commitment to religious harmony

Colombo, April 21 (newsin.asia): The Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa said in his message to make the first anniversary of the Easter Sunday suicide bombings in the island nation that he will identify and bring before the law the true perpetrators” of the massacres.

I will not leave any room for any form of extremism, or violence from any extremists to be unleashed on my people again. I also assure you that the true perpetrators responsible for this Easter Sunday massacres will be identified and brought before the law,” the President said.

It is most unfortunate that the mechanisms that were in place to ensure national security were dismantled (by the then regime). When anarchy prevails, it is only natural for extremism, terrorism and all kinds of violence to raise its despicable head,” Gotabaya added.

I deeply empathize with the families of all those who lost their lives and sustained grave injuries, the Catholic community and entire Sri Lankan citizenry who were terrorized by these horrifying massacres.”

Exactly a year ago, on April 21, 2019 a group of extremists, bent on a macabre agenda unleashed a sequence of terror targeting Catholic churches and tourist hotels. Around 270 people were killed and about 500 were gravely injured in Easter Sunday attacks. Some who survived, later succumbed to their injuries after months of suffering. Some others will be disabled for life.”

Even though Catholics were targeted, this was a terrorist attack against all Sri Lankan citizens. This heinous crime against humanity needs to be condemned by all without any tolerance towards this extremist ideology,” the President said.

In conclusion, he said: I once again commiserate with all those who were adversely affected by the Easter Sunday massacres and all Sri Lankans who were deeply shocked by these barbaric acts.”

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s Message

In his message, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said: Today we mark the anniversary of the terrorist bombings that shattered the peace of Sri Lanka and the world on Easter morning one year ago. These malicious attacks targeted churches and hotels, places where people had gone to worship and to enjoy time together on a holiday. We remember the more than 250 victims of these ISIS-inspired attacks, including five U.S. citizens, and extend our deepest condolences to their families and friends. We stand in solidarity with the survivors of this brutality, and pray for their healing. Just as the Government of Sri Lanka works to hold those involved to account, the United States will not rest in its pursuit of justice for those who commit such atrocities.

Together with our Sri Lankan friends and partners, we reaffirm our shared commitment to countering terrorism while respecting civil liberties, to ensuring sustainable development for all, and to freedom of religion and belief that supports mutual respect.

Cardinal Ranjith reiterates Catholic church’s commitment to religious harmony

In his message Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith saidL On this occasion when we commemorate the dead and pray for the wounded of the Easter Sunday bomb attack in April 2019, on its first anniversary, I wish to express our sincere thanks to all those of you who stood by the victims showing your solidarity with them and for assisting them in every way possible. These victims belonged to all ethnic and religious groups in Sri Lanka and included foreigners.”

We honour specially all those, who lost their loved ones and those who were injured, for their spirit of magnanimity in not reacting in anger and hatred. What was remarkable in that, was the resolve to stay calm and peaceful so that an evil plot to destabilize Sri Lanka with racial or religious riots was defeated by all Sri Lankans.”

I wish to commend all those who espoused the cause of peace and extended a helping hand to those injured and to the families of the victims in many ways. We also call to memory and pray for the 42 foreigners who came with their families to visit this beautiful and peaceful Island and lost their lives in this heinous attack.”

First of all I wish to extend our grateful thanks to the Holy Father Pope Francis who was one in spirit with us during this time and sent his special envoy to convey his closeness to our country and its people. We are also thankful to the foreign missions in the country, particularly the High Commissions of all the Islamic Republics for their prompt visit to me after the attack, to convey their solidarity with our nation. I wish to extend my sincere thanks to the many foreign countries and their citizens who sent messages of condolences, support to the Relief Fund and the assurance of prayers.”

For example, the Eiffel Tower switched off its lights at midnight on 21st April and the Burj Kalifa in Dubai was lit up with the colours of the Sri Lankan flag, in honour of the victims. We are also grateful to the many other countries, who showed similar gestures of solidarity with our people and also to the local and foreign business entities and individuals who generously supported the Relief Fund established to help the victims.”

We are thankful to the International Media, especially those who interviewed me locally and via phone, for reporting the true facts to the international community. I wish to state that even in the future we need you to support us in reporting to the international community the true facts and the true image of our beautiful Island Nation which has been called the Pearl of the Indian Ocean.”

We are grateful to those friendly nations that generously shared their intelligence information prior to the attack on several occasions, which our political leaders did not take seriously. We are aggrieved that those responsible for governance at that time, did not take seriously the repeated warnings received concerning these attacks and so, not only allowed this massacre to take place but also sought to hide their culpability in different ways after the attack.”

Still more serious is the responsibility of all those who masterminded these attacks, by planning, funding and encouraging the perpetrators and deliberately covering up the facts of the case. Some of them surely knew this was coming.”

We thank the incumbent President for his insistence in investigating these attacks thoroughly and for ensuring that those responsible are brought to book. We are indeed sad and shocked to hear that some educated and elitist people, some of whom are connected to the legal sphere, are trying to bring pressure on the President to cover up these investigations and possibly hide the authors.”

What are human rights when they try to use such to cover up the perpetrators and associates of those who violated the basic right to life of so many innocent human beings ,men, women and children?”

We also wish to affirm our confidence in the Presidential Commission of Inquiry appointed for this purpose and we are hopeful that we will be able to ascertain who orchestrated these attacks and who shirked their responsibility to prevent them and why.”

At the same time we Catholics wish to affirm our commitment to live harmoniously with the other religious groups, conscious of the common culture that has been enriched by the teachings of Buddhism to a very large extent and in which culture we find a high level of acceptance and tolerance. Our challenge would be to work amicably with all our fellow citizens and to ensure a spirit of true acceptance and integration within the national fabric of cultures for a peaceful and prosperous new Sri Lanka free of all divisions, and petty mindedness.”

Finally even though it is difficult to comprehend the Will of God, as a ray of hope that miracles do happen, I wish to mention that the Danish family who lost their children in the bomb attack, has been blessed with twin girls on 11th March 2020. This indeed is a new beginning for them and a new hope for all of us, that life is precious and we need to be responsible and live in harmony with one another.”

I end with the words of our Lord Jesus: Love one another as I have loved you” and do unto other as you would have them do to you.”

Easter attack culprits will be brought to book soon – Defence Secretary

The Government would bring all culprits who planned, financed and supported the Easter bombing carnage that killed over 270 and wounded over 500 innocent people on last year’s Easter Sunday, to book soon, Defence Secretary Major General (Retired) Kamal Gunaratne has said.

Issuing a statement yesterday that marked one-year of the coordinated bomb blasts carried out by a local Islamic extremist group that blew three Christian churches and three hotels in Colombo, he said there would not be any space for any group or individuals to spread extremism in the country.

We will bring all those who involved in those bomb blasts, irrespective of their social status, political affiliations, ethnicity or religion to book,” the Defence Secretary has said referring to the on-going investigations into Easter Sunday attacks.

He said under the leadership of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who had pledged to give the top most priority to national security, country’s people would be protected from terrorism and extremism.

We will not let our people to die and suffer in such unfortunate incidents. We have taken all precautionary measures to identify such acts of terrorism or extremism at early stages and taken all necessary actions to bring them before the law,” the Defence Secretary said.

Highlighting the importance of public support and contribution of the intelligence agencies in curbing extremism, he said under the directives of the President the intelligence agencies had been strengthened under a system that brought all intelligence agencies in the country into one fold.

The Government will do the justice for the people, including the children, who died and living with deadly scares and their families by punishing the culprits and also strengthening the national security,” he said.

The Defence Secretary said according to an assessment done by the President Secretariat and Defence Ministry, the Easter Sunday bomb blasts occurred year was mainly due to negligence to maintain national security.

Sri Lanka commemorates one year since Easter Sunday carnage with two-minute silence

Sri Lanka today commemorates the one-year anniversary of the coordinated terror attacks that left the country devastated on the 21st of April 2019.

A two-minute silence was observed at 8.45 am in remembrance of the victims of the tragic carnage which killed over 250 including foreigners and injured at least 500 people.

https://youtu.be/JPQgLkNz5N8

On Easter Sunday last year, in a coordinated move by a local militant group called National Thowheed Jama’ath, bombs were detonated at St. Anthony’s Church in Kochchikade, St. Sebastian’s Church in Katuwapiriya, Zion Church in Batticaloa, Cinnamon Grand, Kingsbury and Shangri-La hotels in Colombo, a guest house in Dehiwala and at a housing complex in Dematagoda.

Sri Lanka declared a state of emergency immediately after the bombings and the probes launched into the incident led to the arrest of many who have had links to the suicide bombers.

Archbishop of Colombo, His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith recently appealed to all Sri Lankans to observe a two-minute silence at 8.45 am in remembrance of those who were victimized by the catastrophic attacks.

In his sermon at a Mass celebrated at his residence for this year’s Easter Sunday, the Cardinal said Some misguided youths attacked us and we as humans could have given a human and selfish response,” adding that we mediated on Christ’s teachings and loved them, forgave them and had pity on them.”

In the meantime, as Sri Lanka is currently under curfew owing to the local outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, all public congregations to commemorate the Easter Sunday attacks have been called off.

The general public was, hence, requested to light a lamp and observe religious practices at homes.

WOULD THE WORLD ECONOMY BE TAKEN BACK TO THE CLASSICAL ERA BY THE CORONA PANDEMIC?

April 20th, 2020

BY EDWARD THEOPHILUS

The world economy has been radically changing since the great depression experienced in the 1930s, meantime, the cold war also supported control of consumer demand and the market economic system forcing many countries to spend for defense activities than investments in development projects. The war mentality limited the production in various areas thereby increased unemployment and excess capacity. The classical economists looked at this situation considering that the wage cut would positively support to increase wage funds and provide more employment opportunities, but Keynes viewed that the idea of the classical economists would negatively impact the effective and aggregate demand thereby creating more unemployment. The other significant point that should be considered by policy-makers is can helicopter money concept get the world out of the depression from the downturn originated from the corona pandemic. My feeling is there is no difference in the helicopter money concept and deficit budget concept of John Meynard Keynes.

The view of Keynes accepted many countries and presented deficit budgets to achieve full employment level.  However, we can see that the views of economists have been changed since the late 1980s especially Chicago economists understood that deficit budget would support hyperinflation and proposed to an inflation tax to take out excess money from the economy.  The current situation is how to off excess money from the helicopter money in the economy and should the world go to a new tax regime in 2022. The World Bank and IMF and other international monetary institutions attempted to correct policies of the world and advantages of such efforts of international financial institutions have gone to developed nations and lower-income countries relegated to a debt trap and to agree with trade policies which were supported to secure the advantages of international trade to developed nations. A higher volume of national income of lower-income countries goes to debt repayment than the investments in economic activities for stability, creating employment and reasonable distribution of national income. Injustice in the distribution of economic gains augmented in the world.

Economists in the IMF predict that the world economy will be recessed by 5% in 2021, which means the corona pandemic will negatively impact all over the world and unemployment has already risen to more than 10% in the developed world as well as in lower-income nations. The prediction of the IMF will have a difficult to abide by lower-income countries and injustice in the world is dominating. The powerful nations did not listen to the cry of lower and middle-income countries and developed nations organized conferences to discuss the matter than taking action to give justice to lower and middle-income countries.  Many people talk about injustice and some predict that the corona pandemic would be an abstruse blessing to recorrect the world. However, people don’t want to go to the Malthus theory, but they want justice.

The COVID 19 pandemic and related economic crisis seem to be directing the world economy back to the classical era giving a new interpretation to economic theory that a pandemic also can push the world economy to depression and nobody can predict about the concussion of a pandemic without inventing an effective medicine to control it. Economists are poor when depression is created by a pandemic because they cannot model and effective way out of the problem.  Economic students never learned this idea before and they were limited to a few points based on experience interpreting the reasons for an economic depression.  Economists never believed such a new interpretation and during the classical era, there were theories relating to all production factors and modernization, during the past three decades economists attempted to a new interpretation for economic growth and development but they reluctant to talk on the difficulties of the poor.

With strong speculation that the world economy will recess or downturn, the temporary policy direction of high-income countries is to recorrect the market demand giving incentives to consumers and the policy of developed nations motivated developing nations such as Sri Lanka to offer few incentives to poor people for their survival. The International Monetary Fund has focused to provide credit facilities rather than to suggest justice in the distribution of economic advantages to lower and middle-income nations.  The most significant support in the pandemic situation is to help them to enhance the exchange value of currencies in lower-income countries to enable them to manage imports, increase foreign exchange reserves and the quality of human life. Neither the IMF nor other international financial institutions are being considered this point.  Many economists feel that it needs restarting North-South dialog or globalization as the corona pandemic crystallizes the disadvantages of or injustice to lower and middle-income countries. The justice to poor nations is not helping to carry begging bowl, but to help them stand on their feet.

If it looks at the changes initiated in the early 1980s with the invention of microcomputers and mobile phones the automation has been supported by the technology in all areas of the economy conscripted job losses to poor people and to work more times to gain fewer returns. Quick innovations in technology and product developments such as the internet-based UTUBE, Twitter, Facebook, Mobile communication in Whatapp and Viber and other new electronic products have contrived the young generation to follow the technology like mad dogs and spend the assets and revenue to purchase technology.  The advantages of technology and new products have gone to a few rich people.

When analyzing the spending pattern of the household more than seventy percent of monthly income must spend on technology, renting, and debt repayments and people have no opportunity to spend hard earn income on food and other essential requirements such as educating and skills development of kids.  Young kids spend all earning from part-time work on mobile communication and few capitalist owners of electronic products gain billions from poor and it is a clear injustice in the world. Few investors persistent to make new products and exploit the young generation and the economic advantages of innovation go to a few people and poor people push to further difficulties.  Technology (Mobile phone) use to present an immoral presentation and poison brains of people and finally, payments for these presentations go to pockets of limited rich people. It seems that new electronic products such as Facebook, Utube, and many other users to change political opinion and against laws and regulations in countries, but the governments cannot react because the authority is with the owners of products.  They are contrary to democratic rights.

Before the great depression 1930s, to build a house in developed countries as well as in lower-income countries had an opportunity to poor people and to buy a small piece of land for less than $ 10000, now it has gone to more than a half-million and poor people in developed countries struggle their entire life to repay housing loans, personal loans, and credit card debt while rich people build high rise apartments for renting and exploit poor people.

After the recession incurred in the 1990s international financial institutions insisted hard conditions to provide credit facilities to lower and middle-income customers. When analyzing the post-pandemic era, the opinion expressed by Victoria Wisnieskey Otero in the South China Morning Post on 18 April 2020 gives valuable points. According to her opinion Corona Pandemic is not a great equalizer, but it could be a force for good if we learned a lesson for the post-pandemic era.” She mentioned two vital points (a) unprecedented livelihood relief measures would work to reduce social inequality, and (b) we must invest not only in supporting individual needs, but also strengthening the fabric of the community.” The spending patterns in the developed world don’t reflect that they are with social inequality and investing in strengthening the fabric of the community.  My feeling is developed countries invest to secure the market that is the source of wealth and they haven’t a genuine concern on social equality. Now developed nations are looking for strategies to regain the lost market and regain assets.  Economic policy-makers in the world need to look back at the practical implementing of policies like a repenting sinner and reduce social inequality.

Going back to the classical era is not the wish of modern people or an option to correct policy. It is seen that some leaders urge supporters to liberate states encouraging protest coronavirus restrictions. Innovation, modernization, and technology are exigencies to the world and all these must be operated in a just society, which means advantages of modernization must reasonably go to rich and poor.  After the great depression during the 1930s a large volume of economic benefits from technology, modernization and innovations went to a small number of rich people in a country. In Sri Lanka, the economic benefits of the service industry attracted to a small group of rich people.  There is a disparity in development between urban and rural areas.

Policy-makers of Sri Lanka need to focus on social equality and the fabric of the community.  The restriction of modernization is not the answer, but it needs expanding modernization to the rural community and supporting for equalizing them with urban people by more investment in the rural production process and creating employment opportunities.

Sri Lanka’s Easter Sunday attack & understanding Islamic Terrorism

April 20th, 2020

On 21st April 2019 the people of Sri Lanka stood shocked. Exactly 10 years after defeating 30 years of terror Sri Lanka was to face a new form of terror. What is peculiar and notable about the Easter Sunday multiple mass murders was that the attacks on Catholic churches and luxury hotels by very rich Muslim suicide bombers did not have any demands. No one still knows why they committed the attacks. This question one year on remains unanswered still. While we are searching for the answers and the masterminds behind the attacks and inspite of two commissions being appointed to find the answers, while understanding the Muslim sentiment given that all suicide bombers were Muslims, it is good for the Muslim minority to look inward & also search for answers as to why an increasing number of Muslims are killing more Muslims than non-Muslims as statistics now reveal.

The Muslim population globally is 1.8billion making up 24% of the world population. This also means there are 1.8billion Islam adherents.

There are 53 majority Muslim nations in the 57 Muslim organization calling itself the OIC – Organization of Islamic Cooperation.

Ironically majority of Muslims do not live in the Middle East but in the Asia-Pacific region (South & South East Asia) which accounts for 62% of the global Muslims.

Incidentally 1.2billion of the 1.8billion Muslims live in 10 countries (Indonesia, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Egypt, Iran, Turkey, Algeria and Iraq) Of this 10 only in India despite Muslims being 194million, they are a minority.

A little over 600million Muslims are spread across rest of the Muslim majority countries but mostly in non-Muslim majority countries.

In Europe, Muslims comprise 8% of the population in France (5.8million) while in UK Muslims make up 5% (2.6m) however it is in newly created Kosovo where 90% are Muslims and Albania where 82% (2.6m) are Muslims that make the only 2 Muslim majority countries in Western Europe.

The Muslim population in the US is 1% while Israel has a Muslim population of 18% (1.6m)

Islam spread after the 7th century. Islam is broken into 2 main groups – Sunni & Shia with Shiites making only 10 to 15% of the 1.8billion Muslim population. Shiites are concentrated mainly in Iran, Southern Iraq, South Lebanon and there are Shiite communities in Saudi Arabia, Syria, Afghanistan, Pakistan & India. Shiites also dominates where there is oil – Iran, Iraq, Eastern Saudi Arabia. The sufi’s are another group. There are in all around 73 denominations. Iran, Pakistan, Saudi, Afghanistan, Mauritiana, Yemen make up the major Islamic states. Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, Kuwait, Algeria, Malaysia, Maldives, Morocco, Libya, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, Somalia, and Brunei Islam is considered a state religion.

However, there has been a split between Shias and Sunnis since 632. The split was over the question of succession after Muhammad – Shiites preferred succession to remain in family (Ali married to Muhammad’s daughter Fatimah) while Sunni’s wished to have the elite select a suitable leader. Sunni’s demand prevailed but Ali became the fourth caliph but he too was killed in 661. Ali’s son Hussein led the Shiites caliph against the Sunni caliph. Shiites refer to their leaders as imam – Ali being first and Hussein being third. The reference in usage of ‘imams’ & reverence further divides the two groups. Shiites held Persia while Sunni’s the Ottoman Empire

https://www.huffpost.com/entry/sunni-shiite-violence_n_5617767

https://www.cfr.org/timeline/modern-sunni-shia-tensions

So we see two factors at odds with each other.

The friction since 632 continuing through sectarian violence between Muslim-Muslims causing more deaths than non-Muslims killing Muslims and then armed conflicts of which majority are committed by Muslims and majority of victims are also Muslims.

The religious element to these conflicts is affecting Muslims more than others.

Muslims & Armed Conflict

Of the major conflicts around the world majority are Muslim, majority of fatalities and injuries are to Muslims, majority are in Muslim nations and majority of the perpetrators are Muslims. This is a strange scenario – the victims are Muslim and the perpetrators are also Muslim.

According to Pew Research out of 49 Muslim countries 41% have experienced civil war. Of the over 400 insurgent organizations recorded since 1945 more than 200 are Muslim. Ironically all of these groups are being armed and trained by Western intelligence who are manipulating Muslim terror groups for their geopolitical advantage. If this is well known, why are Muslims joining groups that end up only killing Muslims?

Of 167,221 terrorism-related fatalities reported from 2001 to 2015, almost all — 163,532 or 98 percent — occurred outside the United States and Western Europe, according to the University of Maryland’s Global Terrorism Database (GTD). GTD data on 25 Muslim-majority countries from Iraq to Malaysia reveal that these countries account for 75 percent of all fatalities from terrorist attacks from that period. The past 15 years Iraq has accounted for over 50,000 sectarian deaths. In Pakistan between 1987–2007 – Sunni-Shia sectarian rivalries has caused 4000 Muslim deaths.

Iran-Iraq war in 1980s is said to have caused over 500,000 deaths.

All of the conflicts where Muslims are armed, the use of violent parts of Islam is used to justify their killing.

Contrary to Samuel Huntington’s Clash of the Civilizations implying a showdown between Christianity & Islam, its looking more a Muslim-Muslim confrontation.

Leading OIC member states (Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey) have provided direct and indirect support (intelligence, weapons financing, territorial respite) for members of Hamas and ISIS” (globalgovernancewatch)

While much furor over anti-Muslim and Islamaphobia is projected and promoted by Muslims, the Muslim-Muslim killings that account for lakhs more deaths among their own is silently ignored.

Libyan conflict has allegedly caused death to some 25,000 Muslims. Irrespective of whether the deaths were pro-Libyan or rebel … all were Muslims. Lakhs of people remain displaced also. It is good for the Muslims to remember that it was the non-Muslims globally that decried the manner that the Libyan leader was ousted and killed and how Western leaders laughed after helping kill him. This writer was one of the first to write against Gaddafi’s murder. Karma has killed the rebel leader responsible for Gaddafi’s death by coronavirus!

The Syrian conflict has caused the death of over 400,000 Muslims – again irrespective of whether they were Syrian government forces or rebel – all the dead were Muslims.

Yemen conflict has resulted in 100,000 dead Muslims and almost 16million Yemeni’s in hunger. Who are bombing Yemen? The Saudis.

Thus, none of the anti-Muslim incidents often repeated come anywhere remotely close to the number of casualties, displacements, fatalities and injuries caused by Muslims on Muslims the world over. This should be more of a concern to all Muslims than the attention they divert towards presenting an anti-Muslim Islamaphobia image. Uniting against non-Muslims but divided amongst their own.

There is another area that Muslims must also look at.

The 57 Muslim member states of the OIC contributed $6.425trillion to the world’s gross domestic product (GDP) in 2016 (World Bank). This $6.425trillion is just 8.5`% of world GDP. OIC’s contribution to world GDP is not proportionate to its population size (1.8billion or 24% of the world’s population)

But out of the 10 richest countries in the world 4 include Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Brunei and Kuwait. The Gulf State Qatar is the richest Muslim country in the world which has GDP per capita 93,714 USD.

Qatar gained independence in 1971 from Britain and from 1971 ($387.7m GDP) Qatar has increased GDP to $156.6billion by 2016. Qatar’s growth is reliant on natural gas reserves, oil and migrant workers. In 1971 its population was 119,000 today its over 2.5million. 2.2million migrant workers comprise 90% of Qatar’s population & workforce. Per capita income published by Qatar is based only on incomes of native Qatari citizens whose population is just 250,000

10 highest GDP countries in the OIC are – Indonesia, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Iran, UAE, Egypt, Malaysia, Pakistan & Bangladesh (highest to lowest)

According to Islamicmarkets.com 25 of the OIC member states are placed amongst the 56 most poverty-stricken countries of Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. One in every five citizens of OIC countries — 21% Muslims that is 350million Muslims live below US$1.90 per day world poverty line.

21 OIC member countries routinely appear on the World’s Least Developed Countries. Yet OIC nations possess 70% of the world’s energy resources & 40% of the world’s natural resources. Why is the wealth not shared even amongst the Muslim countries by the Muslim countries?

Irony is that the Islamic empire boasts of a civilized and advanced world for over 1000 years. What happened to the Golden Age of Muslims contributing to the arts, sciences and culture? There have been 3 Muslim Nobel Prize recipients and all three made their names living in Western countries.

According to Al Jazeera it is estimated that around 20% or more of the 34 million Saudi citizens live in poverty. More than two-thirds of Saudis are under 30, and nearly three-quarters of all unemployed Saudis are in their 20s, according to government statistics. (UK Guardian) Saudi Arabia’s population is around 33 million. In 2019, Saudi Arabia’s estimated unemployment rate amounted to approximately 5.92 percent.

The Easter Sunday attack in Sri Lanka was committed by suicide bombers who were not poor and belonged to rich and affluent Muslim families. This is the first time suicide bombers from rich families have committed suicide, it’s also the first case of mass suicide and mass murder in Sri Lanka by Muslims. People naturally have genuine questions given the magnitude of the tragedy. These questions cannot be silenced by diverting attention and presenting a global image of islamophobia and attacks upon Muslims. The above examples show if attacks on Muslims is a key issue for Muslims, then it is Muslims who must save Muslims from Muslims and stop the growing sectarian and terrorist violence taking place globally, though funded and armed by non-Muslims, the acts of terror are committed by Muslims on Muslims. This is the reality that Muslims should finally come to terms with. The answers are found with them among their own.
