Former Russian Ambassador Udayanga Weeratunga has claimed that the Sri Lankan parliament will be dissolved on the 14th of next month, with parliamentary elections to follow before the presidential election. In an interview with Hiru News, Weeratunga stated that President Ranil Wickremesinghe has agreed to this timeline.

Weeratunga suggested that the dissolution of parliament may occur on the night of the 14th or 15th, paving the way for imminent parliamentary elections. He indicated that these developments will significantly impact the political landscape in Sri Lanka.

“A parliamentary election will be held very soon. How will President Ranil Wickremesinghe work with the government that will be formed after that? There is a possibility that a candidate from Pohottuwa or another party will come to the presidential election,” Weeratunga remarked.

Despite assertions from the Speaker of Parliament that such a dissolution is unlikely, Weeratunga remains confident that the elections will proceed as he described.

Furthermore, Weeratunga mentioned that President Wickremesinghe is not expected to contest in the upcoming presidential election. He emphasized that an agreement has been reached to prioritize the parliamentary election.

Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) has yet to nominate a candidate for Prime Minister. Weeratunga noted that MP Dhammika Perera is considered a strong contender for the position.<

As the political scenario evolves, these developments will be closely monitored by both local and international observers.
