Near Death Experience (NDE) Reply to Dr Ruwan M Jayatunge

December 23rd, 2016

Ruwan M. Jayatunge, M.D. describes Near Death Experience (NDE) as a subjective experience with many NDEs depending on the individual’s education level, cultural factors, and religious beliefs.  Although NDE is not defined as a universal experience, it does have common elements associated with it.  These elements include characteristics such as out of body experience, traveling through a tunnel, floating, levitation, and seeing a light.  This phenomenon certainly warrants more scientific investigation by researchers.

Dr. Raymond Moody coined the term NDE in his famous book Life After Life.  Dr. Moody documented more than one hundred case studies of people who experienced NDE. Subsequent to interviewing over a thousand people who had these experiences, Dr. Moody made the following conclusion:  It has given me great confidence that there is a life after death.  As a matter of fact, I must confess to you in all honesty, I have absolutely no doubt, on the basis of what my patients have told me, that they did get a glimpse of the beyond.”

From a scientific perspective, the latest research on NDE has revealed that neuro-physiological reactions occur in the brain.  Some research suggests NDEs are the result of stimulation of the hippocampus by endogenous endorphins; resulting in limbic and temporal lobe seizures. During these seizures, it is believed that the stress of dying generates natural opiates” such as enkephalins and endorphins; which subsequently disinhibit the hippocampus, as well as lower the seizure threshold within the temporal lobe.

Upon reading Dr. Jayatunge’s article on NDE, I recalled an experience that my own father had which he must have retold at least fifty times.  He was given the wrong medication while in the doctor’s office, and went into a state of being unconscious.  While efforts were occurring to resuscitate him, my father later explained how he literally saw himself leave his body.  He described in great detail how he floated toward the corner of the ceiling, and viewed in detail all the efforts to revive him.  Then he suddenly found himself in front of a beautiful body of water that he described as a river in heaven.”  On the other side of the river were hundreds of children dressed in white apparel, dancing gleefully as if they did not have a care in the world.  My father described how everything within him wanted to cross over to the other side” but he couldn’t.  At that moment, he found himself back in the doctor’s office, and slipping back into his body.  He later described to the doctor in precise detail exactly what they were doing to resuscitate him. The doctor was shocked to hear the accuracy of what my father described, despite being unconscious during these events.

Another NDE that I am personally aware of involved my sister-in-law who passed from cancer.  On her death bed, she was gasping for breath as her husband was by her side.  Suddenly, she sat up with much ease and looked up toward the ceiling, looking intently as if she was staring straight at something or someone. She then said, Lord, I thought you were going to heal me!”  She then paused and said Okay Lord, I understand, I understand.  I love you too!” She settled back down onto the bed, closed her eyes, and peacefully passed away.

On a final note, the Apostle Paul had significant encounters with death that he survived.  Of significance, it is believed that Paul visited heaven on a given occasion after being stoned. This is described in 2 Corinthians 12:1- 4: Let me tell about the visions I’ve had, and revelations from the Lord. Fourteen years ago I was taken up to Heaven for a visit. Don’t ask me whether my body was there or just my spirit, for I don’t know; only God can answer that. But anyway, there I was in Paradise, and heard things so astounding that they are beyond a man’s power to describe or put in words (and anyway I am not allowed to tell them to others).” TLB

NDE leaves one with many questions. Maybe as the future unfolds, we will grasp a deeper understanding of this phenomenon.  The conclusion that I’ve come to is best described in an old hymn called By and By.”  One verse in this song states:  By and by when the morning comes; All the saints of God will gather at home; We will tell the story of how we overcome; And we’ll understand it better by and by!”

Uva PC defeats Development (Special Provisions) draft bill

December 23rd, 2016

By Yusuf Ariff Courtesy Adaderana

December 23, 2016  07:38 am

The Development (Special Provisions) draft bill was defeated by the Uva Provincial Council with a majority of four votes.

Thirteen provincial councillors had voted against the bill while only 9 voted in favour, Ada Derana reporter said.

The bill was submitted by Uva Governor M. P. Jayasinghe for approval and taken up at a council session chaired by A. M. Buddhadasa yesterday (22).

All SLFP members except Chief Minister Chamara Sampath, who abstained, voted against the Bill, which all UNP members voted for.

Minister of Development Strategies and International Trade Malik Samarawickrama announced this week that the Development (Special Provision) Bill will be presented in Parliament in February 2017.

He denied that this bill would pave the way for a ‘Super Minister’ as accused by several opposition parties and added that, through this bill, it will facilitate the investors coming here to easily get their work done through a one-stop shop.

The dragon laughs

December 23rd, 2016

Editorial Courtesy The Island

Time was when Sri Lankans thought they were blessed with more grey matter than their Chinese counterparts. Their superiority complex is evident in a popular local expression which they still habitually use on being told a tall tale: konde bendapu cheennunta kiyapan— ‘go tell it to the Chinese with chignons’. But, today, the Chinese sans chignons, smartly dressed in western attire, have turned the tables on Sri Lankans who think no end of themselves and have underestimated the power of Confucianism.

India, which gave a RAW deal to President Mahinda Rajapaksa for being pro-Chinese and allegedly went to the extent of helping topple him last year, has got a raw deal from its darling, the Sirisena-Wickremesinghe government, which is desperate for Chinese funds for its survival. The current political leaders opposed the Chinese funded Port City, which was under construction at the time of the last presidential election and inveighed against the Rajapaksa government for appeasing China at the expense of the country’s sovereignty and relations with India and the western block. But, today, they have made a complete volte-face; they have not only authorised the resumption of the construction of the Port City but also allowed the Chinese company concerned to reclaim more land from the sea! Whoever would have thought the bigmouths of the incumbent regime would grovel before the Chinese? China has also got the Hambantota port and 15,000 acres in that area at bargain prices as it were. It couldn’t have asked for more! It has outfoxed not only Sri Lankan politicians but also their foreign allies.

China having thus got the best of both worlds, it will be interesting to see the reaction of India, the US and others, which helped engineer last year’s regime change here, to the handover of the Hambantota port and thousands of acres in its vicinity to the Chinese, their common enemy. Their silence is baffling. The Hambantota port is of strategic importance to China in that it lies close to its energy routes as is only too well known.

China’s rivals, however, cannot be expected to take it lying down. Now, Sri Lanka is of more strategic importance to them with China having secured the Hambantota port. They usually don’t baulk at anything in their efforts to protect their interests; they have a history of even bombing countries back into the Stone Age for that purpose. One wonders whether they have made a virtue of necessity by allowing the cash-strapped Sirisena-Wickremesinghe government, which they certainly cannot help financially, to strike the controversial port deal with China so that they can use it to gain a foothold in Trincomalee and/or Mattala? There is no way the government can refuse if they want to have a permanent presence here. If what is feared comes to pass—absit omen!—this country will become another battleground for world powers and find itself in the same predicament as the proverbial monkey which placed itself between two elephants engaged in a fierce clash, as we argued in this space the other day.

The Joint Opposition (JO), consisting of UPFA politicians loyal to the Rajapaksas, is in a quandary as regards the controversial Hambantota deal. The JO big guns cannot back it openly as they do not want to irk the public and lose votes as a result; they cannot oppose it either because of their strong bonds with China, which has been solidly behind them. Their mild criticism of the deal is sickening. They are floating like bees and stinging like butterflies while the government is suppressing workers’ rights, crushing labour struggles, endorsing attacks on the media and forcing the public into submission so as to curry favour with China and obtain loans.

Sri Lankans should stop using the aforesaid Chinese-with-chignons expression, which is no longer valid. Their own government has taken them for asses! It is said that people get the governments they deserve.

Fifth container terminal to India Colombo Port development

December 23rd, 2016

In the wake of a simmering controversy over China Merchant Port Holdings being given an 80 per cent stake in the Hambantota port, a fresh dispute is brewing at the Colombo Port regarding a move to involve India in the development of the East Container Terminal (ECT).

The SLPA has announced that it was planning to award the ECT on Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) basis. Well informed sources told The Island that the government was planning to privatise the ECT.

article_image

Addressing the media at the Centre for Society and Religion (CSR) at Maradana, Purawesi Balaya spokesperson Saman Ratnapriya claimed that they had been briefed by port workers of the move.

The ECT in its present form has 440-metre long breakwater and an 18-metre approach depth, a 20 hectare yard area and connected facilities developed by the SLPA.

Ratnapriya said that the SLPA had obtained USD 350 mn loan from the Asian Development Bank for the project.

The trade union activist urged the government to explore ways and means of retaining its ownership while managing the facility with suitable partner. According to Ratnapriya handing over the terminal to a private party wouldn’t help Sri Lanka’s efforts to raise state revenue.

The SLPA has estimated that acquisition of gantry cranes for the ECT would cost USD 68 mn. Ratnapriya said that it would be a grave mistake on the part of the government to give up the ECT.

There are four container terminals in the Colombo Port, with two terminals (Jaya and Unity) operated by SLPA and the other two (SAGT and Chinese CICT) developed and operated by private terminal operators on BOT concessions.

China Merchant Port Holdings which owned 85 per cent of CICT recently secured 80 per cent share of the Hambantota port in accordance with 99-year lease. While SAGT or South Asia Gateway Terminals, a consortium of local and international industry players reached agreement with Sri Lanka in September 1999 on a 30-year BOT operation, whereas CICT operated on a 35-year BOT project.

No other port can be built from Oluvil to Galle – JHU Hambantota harbour deal

December 23rd, 2016

The Jathika Hela Urumaya yesterday called on the government to clarify if the agreement between the Sri Lanka Ports Authority and China Merchant Holdings prohibited any other ports being built along the belt stretching from Oluvil to Galle.

Jathika Hela Urumaya Western Provincial Council member Nishantha Sri Warnasinghe, addressing a press conference in Colombo, said that the 99-year lease agreement reached with China Merchant Holdings was shrouded in secrecy, with terms of the agreement not made public.

“We are told that the accord prohibits any local or foreign company from building a port along the stretch of sea from Oluvil to Galle. It behoves the authorities to clarify this issue,” he noted, alleging that a USD-100 million commission had changed hands.

Warnasinghe also demanded an explanation on conflicting reports emanating from the government over the number of acres to be released to a Chinese company to build the proposed Hambantota Industrial Zone (HIZ) with figures ranging from 1,500 acres to 15,000 acres being mentioned.

Pointing out that the Bombay Industrial Zone in a huge country such as India, was only 7,000 acres in extent, he queried how the HIZ could extend upto 15,000 acres.

All the 14 Industrial Zones in Sri Lanka covered only a total of 3,000 acres , the JHU member added.

Warnasinghe said that good governance could not be confined to only politics. “One of the reasons for the people to have sent the Rajapaksa’s home was mega corruption. If the current rulers do not clear suspicions that exist with regard to the Hambantota Port, it is only natural for them to be accused of corruption as well.”

Cheating Sinhalese in proposal and Tamils through outcome

December 22nd, 2016

 Malinda Seneviratne

JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake has made two statements regarding reconciliation via constitutional reform. Firstly, he has said that a referendum on a new constitution should not be approached the way the Presidential Election was fought. In that election, the Northern and Eastern Provinces overwhelmingly voted for President Sirisena, who was the default candidate of the United National Party and as such was backed to the hilt by the coalition led by that party.

What Anura K is saying, then, is that in this instance voters should not back a UNP-drafted proposal. In other words, as far as the JVP is concerned, this is not something to do with Mahinda Rajapaksa and indeed is a larger issue that has little to do with regimes, regime-change, good governance and what not.

The signal is that the JVP is opposed to the new constitution or at least those sections that refer to devolution. Why the JVP cannot openly oppose the secrecy shrouding the process or detail the relevant articles to which they only hint that they object, is anyone’s guess.

The second contention is that in the event that the new constitution is rejected at a referendum, the cry for ethnic-based devolution should be abandoned. This provides a clue. The draft new constitution clearly includes articles that go beyond the 13th Amendment in terms of devolving power to the provinces. This is not surprising since the chief architects of the process, Jayampathi Wickramaratne, representing a party that would not win a single seat in Parliament in a first past the post system, is ideologically committed to such devolution. Add to that the ideological preferences of Mangala Samaraweera and Chandrika Kumaratunga, and the intellectual sloth and political naivete of the UNP and we cannot expect anything else.

That said, there is a serious political problem in Anura K’s second wish. Why should defeat result in a dropping of a demand? In the first instance such change of heart cannot be legally obtained. Secondly, if electoral defeat must necessarily result in abandonment of political project, there are lots of things the JVP should have dropped a long time ago. And not just the JVP, one might add.

It is like saying that since there are laws against theft, thieves should give up on wrongdoing from pickpocketing to misusing power and abusing trust to pull of heists worth billions through the manipulation of Central Bank bond issues. Silly.

While we can attribute the formulation of such wishes by the JVP to anxieties about how much political bleeding the JVP could suffer from the enactment of such proposals (if endorsed by a referendum) and of course sophomoric thinking, the key issues are essentially being skirted here, by the JVP and by the Government.

First of all, the question ‘why devolution in the first place?’ is not addressed beyond the crass regurgitation of the logic of Eelamist myth-modeling sans appropriate weight to all the relevant factors. According to all indications, is yet another ill-conceived pandering to Tamil chauvinism marked by an absolute disavowal of history and a shameless and even dangerous refusal to factor in historical, demographic and geographical realities.

It is also, in effect, a proverbial lifting of the sarong to the valid observations made by President Maithripala Sirisena with respect to the errors embedded in provincial boundaries which (need we even mention?) were arbitrarily drawn by the British and has been the ‘base’ on which the Eelam Map has been traced. It’s a trace that Tamil chauvinism swears by and sections of the current Government are loathe to inspect. That’s pernicious historiography compounded by pernicious approval by the very fact of nonsensical constitutional drafting.

It is clearly incumbent upon governments to listen to grievances and to set in place structures and processes that allow for the rational treatment of aspirations where the true dimensions of grievances and the appropriateness of aspirations are correctly assessed. One can argue that these structures and processes do exist. What is lacking is the political will to do this important and necessary audit. The formulation of ‘resolution’ where such ‘homework’ is not done is irresponsible and goes against the basic principles of good governance. In the absence of such will the natural yield is ‘whim and fancy’.

The fate of a people should not be put in the hands of whim-fancy politicians because such idiocy and irresponsibility do not yield reconciliation but rather exacerbate antipathies and produce bloodshed.

What if, for example, the JVP went further and something of this kind: ‘include a caveat whereby a an overall yes” for devolution requires all Tamils to live in the North and East’? That would be unfair, absolutely. On the other hand, therein lies the key problem about devolution predicated on chauvinistic thinking and the exaggeration of claims. Close to half the Tamils live OUTSIDE the so-called traditional/historical homeland (whose histories and traditions at best remain unsubstantiated).

Strong supporters of federalism are now swearing that this is not the right time to have a referendum. It will be defeated, they claim, because ‘wounds are still new’. They advocate a brainwashing of Sinhalese before putting the question to them. That’s ‘democracy’ in their book. In other words Anura K and the JVP need not worry, going by what the devolution racketeers are worried about right now. Any ‘yes’ vote for such measures in Parliament would seal the political fate of the aye-sayers and perhaps even their parties, at least in the short term. The President, at the right time, could pull out SLFP support. That’s ‘goodbye’ to the two-thirds needed to get it passed in Parliament. The UNP could tell Tamils that they did their best but the SLFP wrecked it and thus seek to retain the minority vote. The SLFP will say that the UNP was trying to whack the Sinhalese. A general election would see the UNP losing much ground among the Sinhalese. Needless to say parties such as the TNA will tell Tamil youth that the Sinhalese will never yield anything.

This is what happens when you put the horse before the cart. Reconciliation is scuttled. The necessary starting point of the exercise has been missed. Failure gets scripted, even if that’s not intended. Sooner or later, after much pain, suffering and even bloodshed, we have to return to the beginning, the historical audit and the sober assessment of grievances and the equally sober consideration of aspirations.

If the ‘beginning’ is to be painted in colours that are acceptable to Tamils, then the Vadukoddai Resolution is an excellent document to have on the table. The claims therein could be evaluated with those affirming and negating bringing substance and not rhetoric to the table. Anura K can find his voice, even.

All of the above, we must not forget, has the danger of scuttling important deocraticising measures which may have been included in the draft. The mishandling of Tamil chauvinism by the constitution drafting pundits can therefore wreck that other, more important project that is such an important part of Maithripala Sirisena’s manifesto. We saw a similarly surreptitious move by the Chandrika Kumaratunga government in the year 2000. Proposing the kind of ‘resolution’ that her political successors in this Government are currently pushing effectively resulted in keeping intact the executive presidency.

These are the issues that the JVP could take up, if indeed they want to remain politically relevant into the foreseeable future. As of now they are party to the insidious attempts by a few to cheat the people, the Sinhalese in the proposal itself and the Tamils through the most likely outcome.

Constitution making process: JO spells out non-negotiable conditions, urges govt. to reveal UNP-SLFP proposals

December 22nd, 2016

By Shamindra Ferdinando Courtesy The Island

The Joint Opposition yesterday stressed that its participation in the ongoing constitutional making process would be subject to 14 non-negotiable conditions.

The JO grouping comprises 51 members of parliament elected on the UPFA ticket at Aug 17, 2015 parliamentary polls.

JO leader Dinesh Gunawardena and former External Affairs Minister Prof. G. L. Peiris said that the JO had explained its position to the government, which, they said, was divided over the proposed constitutional reforms.

article_image

Prof. Peiris highlighted the sharp differences between the UNP and the SLFP on key features including the status of executive presidency. In addition to constitutional reforms, the JO addressed several issues at the media briefing at the Dr N. M. Perera Centre.

Prof. Peiris said the UNP and the TNA had been pursuing a common strategy in respect of a referendum on the proposed constitution whereas the SLFP under President Sirisena’s leadership called for a two-thirds majority in parliament for constitutional reforms sans approval at a referendum. Prof. Peiris said the UNP and the President were still undecided on whether they wanted a brand new Constitution or just amendments to the existing one.

The JO conditions included unitary status, special status for Buddhism, no re-merger of the Eastern Province with the Northern Province, non-devolution of police powers, provision for the cetnre to utilise land in any part of the country, retention of the Concurrent and the government’s right to intervene in any province in matters concerning public security.

Prof. Peiris said that the Sirisena-Wickremesinghe coalition should present its proposals before asking others to do so.

MP Gunawardena said the government’s decision to co-sponsor a Geneva Resolution in Oct 2015 on accountability issues should be taken into consideration when studying constitutional reforms. MEP leader Gunawardena said the Geneva Resolution was aimed at facilitating a federal solution at the expense of Sri Lanka’s unitary status.

Gunawardena said that since the change of government in January 2015, the JO had been resisting the ruling coalition’s efforts to promote separatism, both inside and outside Parliament. “The JO recently briefed Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and TNA leader R. Sampanthan on its stand. We reiterated our stand that these conditions cannot be diluted.”

The former President had participated in the discussion, MP Gunawardena said, stressing that the JO participated in the process as the genuine opposition in Parliament.

The MEP leader faulted the Speaker for recognising Trincomalee District MP R. Sampanthan and Anura Kumara Dissanayake as the Opposition Leader and Chief Opposition Whip, respectively, in a bid to deprive the JO of its rightful position in Parliament. MP Gunawardena said the JO had 51 members of Parliament whereas even the TNA-JVP combine had only 22 members.

Prof. Peiris and Gunawardena said that a three-day parliamentary debate in second week of January, 2017 would give the JO an opportunity to inform the electorate of the constitutional reforms process. MP Gunawardena said that there wouldn’t be a vote on the subject.

Prof. Peiris said that the UNP had repeatedly promised to bring in electoral reforms through the 20th Amendment to the Constitution. The SLFP’s support for the 19th Amendment had been subject to the subsequent passage of the 20th Amendment in accordance with all party consensus, Prof. Peiris said, alleging that the promise hadn’t been fulfilled.

No response from govt on JO’s proposals – Dinesh

December 22nd, 2016

The Government has turned a blind eye to the 14 proposals of the Joint Opposition with respect of the proposed new Constitution, the JO asserted on Wednesday.

Markham Signs Friendship Agreement with Mullaitivu, Northern Province, Sri Lanka

December 22nd, 2016

Nihal Perera Toronto

This is how Tamil Diaspora and their supporters are helping anti-Sinhala Tamil politicians like C.V. Wigneswaren in Sri Lanka to gain international recognition for their future homeland – Eelam..

While our Sinhala politicians (of all parties..), are busy with their petty politics and in-fighting for power, perks, etc., Tamils and their supporters are working relentlessly to advance their dream.  The Tamils to their credit, have exploited every opportunity, especially by the Tamil Diaspora communities in the West, to advance their cause by using their propaganda through main-stream media and social media, etc.

In the mean time, our diplomatic missions abroad (especially in Canada), seem utterly incapable of approaching the media, law makers, etc., to enlighten them with current positive steps taken by the GOSL to help ethnic minorities through on-going reconciliation efforts. One of the biggest weaknesses of any Sri Lankan government so far, has been its inability to use its foreign missions effectively to counter some of the very damaging and false propaganda carried out by the pro-LTTE forces, especially in the West.  Even the present regime which came to power promising to overhaul the missions and use it to counter Tamil propaganda effectively, has failed completely.  And, still keep sending their relatives and friends to the foreign missions – as nepotism and corruptions continue unabated – as usual.

Sadly, Sinhalese and their leaders seem so far removed from the reality, as they seem clueless, and ignorant of what’s happening, in or out of the country.  They have nobody to blame but themselves for their stupidity, and inherent inability to see the big picture, as the country rapidly marches towards its destruction, thanks to our selfish, corrupted, braindead leaders, and to their equally naïve and ignorant supporters.

Markham Signs Friendship Agreement with Mullaitivu, Northern Province, Sri Lanka
MARKHAM, ON – December 21, 2016 – On November 30, 2016, Markham City Council passed a motion to enter into an agreement of friendship with Mullaitivu, Northern Province, Sri Lanka. This is the Mullaitivu’s first friendship agreement with a Canadian municipality.

On Saturday, January 14, 2017, the Honourable Justice C.V. Wigneswaran, Chief Minister of the Northern Provincial Council Jaffna, and City of Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti, will formally sign the agreement in Council Chambers at the Markham Civic Centre.

Prior to the signing, the City of Markham’s Culture & Economic Development Department will host a business networking event. Approximately 80 to 100 Canadian Tamil business leaders will share information on how to do business in both Markham and in Mullaitivu, Northern Province, Sri Lanka.

Markham is the most diverse municipality in the country, and our Tamil community has played an important role in our continued growth and prosperity,” says Mayor Frank Scarpitti. Together, we have been developing strong economic and cultural connections with the greater Tamil community throughout Canada and South Asia. This agreement signals our continued commitment to the South Asian community and our shared economic growth and prosperity – in Canada and around the world.”

The friendship agreement ceremony will be part of the City’s annual Thai Pongal celebrations in 2017. Thai Pongal is a global Tamil celebration of the harvest and the new moon (New Year). This year’s Thai Pongal celebration is being organized by the Centre for Tamil Heritage and Culture and the City of Markham

There are more than 30,000 Markham residents of Tamil origin,” says Ward 7 Councillor Logan Kanapathi, the first Tamil-Canadian to be elected to any municipal council. For many years, they have been an integral part of every aspect of this community, from owning businesses to volunteering on boards to organizing cultural events. This friendship agreement strengthens the City’s ties with the Tamil community as well as helping build an even stronger Markham. ”

Mullaitivu is located in northeast Sri Lanka, and has a population of approximately 92,000.

Kidney disease and reverse osmosis to get clean water in the short term

December 22nd, 2016

Chandre Dharmawardana, Ottawa, Canada

The government,  some private sector groups, and NGOs have  spend a large amount of money on reverse osmosis (RO) machines for the purification of water as it was advocated  by a number of people who feared  that there are metal toxins (Arsenic, Cd, etc) in the water. The claim that metal toxins are found in the Rajarata environment was also politicized by a number  Keleaniya university activists who invoked the word of God Natha.

They  claim that the country is awash with agrochemical poisons (“wasa visha”),  and that the kidney disease in the Rajarata is due to agrochemicals. That is the public perception which is contrary to the main-stream scientific and medical opinion.  Ven. Rathana (JHU) is a  leader of the “Vasha-Visha Naethi Ratak” program which seeks to ban all fertilizers and pesticides.

Agricultural scientists are unanimous that the best approach is to use a mixture of organic and inorganic fertilizers designed to meet the needs of each type of soil (which is full of living organisms), and that simple minded knee-jerk solutions for complex processes (like agriculture) do not exist.

They have banned glyphosate which is a herbicide that is believed to be  safe by all  main-stream scientists. According to the WHO-FAO, a 60 kg person can drink up to 12 tea spoons a day and yet not get sick.

(the Wikipedia article on Glyphosate  claims that you can drink twice as much without getting sick! I think that is an error). No other country has banned it for agricultural use

although there are some misleading internet reports to the contrary.

No farmer drinks the stuff, even to commit suicide as it is hardly toxic and so it is not an efficient way of killing oneself!  Protective clothes are not necessary as the substance is very benign even though it contains a small percentage  of toxic adjuvents. Many field experiments show that when farmers use it without protective clothes, only  micro-gram quantities get ingested into the body and so it is  harmless because even the adjuvents are ingested at microgram quantities. There are modern formulations without toxic adjuvents.

RO machines are used mainly to clean sea water or in specialized applications. In Sri Lanka ordinary water is re-cleaned with Ro machines!;  a frightened public is a good market for the RO companies. In Colombo some private homes have also invested in RO machines. Some of the NGO- charities  may also be genuinely convinced that they are doing the “right thing”.

RO machines need imported parts and  membranes from, say,  Dow chemicals, and use electricity. A liter of water costs a farmer anything from 50 cts to one rupee. The impure part of the water from RO machines is thrown back into the environment.

When the Water Board Scientists (and also Japanese scientists, WHO-NSF scientists) analyzed the water, and water  input (from rivers, irrigation canals and tanks) to the RO machines, they were found to be quite good for drinking except for the need for a simple filtration and perhaps chlorination step! So RO  is not even needed in most cases.

The people with the Kidney disease live in poor “colonization villages” a bit further away from the rivers and canals; so they use their own backyard wells

(examples given in the attached pictures) which contain water that does not get adequately replenished as it is the dry zone; since the wells are away from the water table of the tanks and canals, fresh water cannot adequately reach the wells either (this was tested using isotopes added to the well water to check if the isotopes seep out to the water table). So this stagnant water dissolves a lot of geological salts, fluorides etc., and I think (and many scientists also think so), that it is this well water containing various salts of geological origin which is at fault.

So we need to give clean water to those farmers living in more remote areas, away from the good water available from the  weva and irrigation canals.

The cheapest and most effective solution is to give these villagers storage tanks for collecting rain water from their roofs. This has been tried for an year in the village known as Ginnoruwa, under the effort of the late Mr. Ranjith Mulleriyawa (an agronomist) and it seems to work (i.e., one can collect enough water to last the whole year). I visited that village during 12-13 Dec this year as well,  and some of the pictures provided  here  are from that visit.

It costs Rs. 75,000 (at most) to install a rainwater tank for a family of five, and from then on there are no costs except for minor repairs to taps etc (as the monkeys and “Rilawas”  come and break the taps to drink the water!). In contrast, setting up RO plants cost about 200 times and it has continual running expenses.

The attached pictures show:

  2. Another backyard well.
  3. Household rain-water tank fed from roof

the school in Ginnoruwa.

  1. Farmer in front of his house, drying paddy (Keeri samba)

But the government (and its “vasha-visha nathi ratak” campaign) seem to be  keen on RO machines, and now they have installed quite a lot of such machines and wasted a lot of money that could have been used to provide  rain water at a cost of less than one cent per liter, instead of 50cts- to one rupee per liter.

If you allow 50 liters per day for a family of 5,  they need 1500 liters per month, and RO water will cost the farmer upto Rs 1500 per month. Rain water will cost the farmer Rs15. This Rs 15 is obtained by amortizing the cost of the plastic tank (Rs 75,000) over its long life period.

One of the farmers stated that he believes that his CKDu is due to a snake bite, and attacks from hornets that he had suffered in 1986. “These things happen due to divine wrath and bad Karma”.  He said that  well water was “Kivul” but he had been drinking it until 2016 January when his family got a donation of a tank for rain water collection. His wife has diabetes.

I have been writing about this for several years, and pointing out that the problem is not the use agrochemicals but the lack of clean water. The Sinhala press does not even publish our articles, and accuse us to be “Vash Visha kompaeni valin salli gaththu Mahaacharya varu”).

PM attempts to divert the attention of the people – Peiris

December 22nd, 2016

By Binoy Suriyaarachchi Adaderana

December 22, 2016  05:03 pm

The Prime Minister did not show the same solicitude for the controversial treasury bond issue when compared to the manner in which he acted on the recent Seylan Bank foreign deal, former Foreign Minister G.L. Peiris says.

He expressed this view while speaking at a press conference held in Colombo on Thursday.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had earlier ordered a reversal and a probe into the 1.3 billion rupees ($8.7 million) Seylan Bank foreign deal as it failed to follow proper procedure. On Friday, 13 million shares or 7 percent stake in Seylan Bank owned by state-run Bank of Ceylon were sold to a foreign fund at 100 rupees each, a 17.6 percent premium to the stock’s closing price that day, through JB Securities.

In the first place, the Prime Minister turned a blind to the bond issue. Unlike this deal,” he said.

Peiris also went on to say Wickremesinghe attempts to divert the attention of the people away from the bond scam.

Meanwhile, the former Minister also said the Facebook page of his party Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna was launched today. They have forgotten the role of Facebook during the election period. Facebook was one of the main driving forces which backed President Sirisena’s campaign,” he added.

SAVE OUR HIGH COMMISSION AND SRI LANKA’S REPUTATION

December 22nd, 2016

By A Concerned Group of Sri Lankans

Farewell to Alms

We are a group of persons of different ethnic groups and religious faiths several of whom have lived in the UK for 30 years or more. Some of us have had close contacts with high commissioners and other Sri Lanka diplomats over these years and have observed how this mission has functioned during those years.

Though we have become citizens of the United Kingdom for reasons that cannot be explained here, we are still sentimentally attached to the country of our birth and so we try to follow wherever possible how effectively our High Commission represents the country of our origin and how it responds to the community’s needs.

We collectively are sad to say that never has our High Commission sunk so low. The Buddhists among us are embarrassed to hear even some of the respected monks in the UK whose opinion we value, publicly ask regular dayakayas attending their temples why it is that Sri Lanka cannot send a high commissioner to the London mission who is capable and could do a job of work without sending their relatives and persons who do not want to associate with those of Sri Lankan origin.

The Buddhists among us were delighted when we read in the Sri Lanka newspapers that a person who they claimed was a devout Buddhist and who patronized several temples in Sri Lanka was to come here as high commissioner.

But the manner in which the new High Commissioner Amari Wijewardene has conducted herself since coming to London some months ago makes us feel ashamed to call ourselves Buddhists and of Sri Lankan lineage, some with dual citizenship.

We list below a few instances where Amari Wijewardene has brought disgrace to our country up to the point that Sri Lankans are wondering what her qualifications are to be appointed the High Commissioner in the UK except that she is said to be Ranil Wickremesinghe’s cousin and has developed the same arrogance that appears to run in the family.

  1. Those of us who have lived here for many decades or have read about former high commissioners and their meritorious and responsible acts on behalf of our country and its people know that one of well-known high commissioner was Dr G.P.Malalasekera, an oriental scholar and devout Buddhist. He began the practice of providing dana to the monks of the London Vihara which was in its early stages, on the first day of each month.

Every high commissioner carried on this practice faithfully and so at the beginning of each month dana from the high commissioner was sent to the temple. Even high commissioners of other ethnic communities or religious faiths continued this practice without fail. Some of us remember that from the early 1980s the UK mission had Tamil, Sinhala, Muslim high commissioners. Some of them were Buddhists, Christians, Muslims and Catholics. Despite these ethnic and religious differences they continued this tradition of providing the monks of the London Vihara the dana. Those who had read the publicity given to Amari Wijewardene before she came as being a devout Buddhist expected her to be faithful to that tradition and act like the true Buddhist it was claimed she was. Instead our group which includes non Sinhala and non Buddhist persons were shocked and saddened to hear that she has stopped this tradition started in the early 1960s by Dr Malalasekera. Instead she has divided the high commission staff into three groups and forced each group to provide dana to the London Vihara once in three months. On December 1, it was the group the high commissioner is in, that provided the dana. While other high commission staff in that group be they drivers, diplomats, messengers or whoever cooked the curries and transported them to the high commission and from there to the Vihara, what did our devout Buddhist high commissioner provide? Just some cooked rice. Thereby she saved the money she would have had to spend each month and forcing the staff to cook dishes at home whether this was a burden to them or not. So Buddhists or non-Buddhists, whether they want to or not are made to acquire merit by force. On December 1st she is supposed to have gone to the London Vihara thus misleading the venerable monks into believing that the tradition that even Faisz Musthapha, a muslim, and Dr Chris Nonis, a catholic, continued is being practiced by her.

  1. But what is happening is reaching the Sri Lanka community at large because she is deliberately keeping away from functions she is invited to. It is said that she will visit and participate in activities only of the Siam Nikaya temples and viharas, bringing caste into her activities when the Buddha himself rejected the division of society on the basis of caste.
  2. The Sri Lankan community is beginning to realize that she is deliberately keeping away from events and activities organized by the community because she believes it is below her dignity to associate with those Sri Lankans who organize them. It is said that she is now delegating a diplomat called Yogadasan who has become her lapdog carrying tales daily, to attend events on her behalf.
  3. Sri Lankans who attended the Katina Pinkama at the London Vihara say that though Amari Wijewardene was present she sat aside not speaking to anyone because she seemed to consider these people too low for her to climb down a step or two from her pedestal to talk to them. Some of them are highly qualified professionals unlike her. Even at the lunch of the Friends of Sri Lanka” to which she was invited she kept aloof as though some of the former British high commissioners to Sri Lanka and other professionals were below her class.
  4. We have come to understand that it is not only because she comes from the different social class as she keeps reminding her staff, that she remains so silent. She does not have the education and the knowledge to engage in political, international affairs and diplomatic discussion or even normal social intercourse. She does not even read a newspaper. So her knowledge is non= existent. She is said to be spending here time looking at attendance registers and writing notes to staff just as it happens in some small time private sector operations run as family business.
  5. These few months have shown the Sri Lanka community that Wijewardene is the worst high commissioner that has been sent here purely because of family connections and she does not have the basic qualifications to be in charge of one of the country’s biggest diplomatic missions. So she keeps away letting mediocre career diplomats and promoted clerks to lead her up the garden path.
  6. Even more curious and shameful is the reception she held after presenting credentials. It is the normal practice followed by other high commissioners and our ambassadors in other capitals that the person who presented credentials hosts the reception with the allowance and if necessary private money. Even Justice Nihal Jayasinghe who is not accustomed to hosting large receptions having been a Supreme Court judge invited Sri Lankans for his credentials party and paid for it. But Amari Wijewardene did a disgraceful thing. She paid only about 1/4th the cost of the reception which was only for foreigners and got other diplomats in the mission to pay the rest of the money from their allowances when it had nothing to do with them. Can you think of a more disgraceful act, trying to save her allowances and got others to pay. This only proved that she does not want to spend money even for official matters.

There is much more to say but we will stop here for now. As and when we receive information on how she avoided attending a Sri Lankan function to which she has been invited such as the Jana Handa event in Hounslow or the Maathrubhumi Vandana at a church premises in Kingsbury, we will keep the community, relevant authorities and media informed of the unfortunate mess made by the Ranil Wickremesinghe government that promised to end nepotism and family rule. What can the community and the country expect from a person who is unable to make a speech, avoids doing so because she is

ignorant and cannot even read clearly the written words as happened at the Deepavali celebrations held at the high commission according one of our Tamil colleagues.

HAMBANTOTA .GALLE AND TRINCO DEVELOPMENT PLANS ……..

December 22nd, 2016

 Dr Sarath Obeysekera

I watched  various TV presentations ,read daily news items in national papers about accelerated plans with all three above ports as the nucleus of growth

I also note that agency with a CEO  with authoritarian powers under the New  super minister will spearhead planning and kicking off  under the Guidance of the Prime Minister .

Do we have an Executing Agency with Super Powers to follow up  the development plans with line agencies  such as Tourist Board ,SLPA Ministry of Fisheries .Provicial Councils and Development  boards as detailed in the draft gazette ?

Having experience in working in plethora of projects like LNG plants.Refineries ,Dockayrds and Sea Reclamation etc ,and knowing the difficulties to get things done by UDA ,CEA etc  I  guarantee you that there is no one in Sri Lanka who can act as the Executor” of the projects

I suggest that H E President leaves the planning and financing to the Super Minister and the agency and take over the execution upon himself .

HE The President shall appoint a string ruthless super secretary /executor under his command to order /instruct/advise and give deadlines to support agencies to execute the project .

Unless this exercise is implemented with a touch of authoritarianism”  with a democratic Face we will never achieve these ambitious plans as detailed by the Hon Minister of Strategic Development.

It will be like the tallest Christmas tree which need completion by X mas eve but a Vardah  Cyclone may shake the foundation if you do not execute it properly !

Abusing Democracy…? An unnecessary Constitution

December 22nd, 2016

By Ananda Ariyarathne Courtesy Ceylon Today

“A Constitution is expected to consolidate all the imaginable ‘safeguards’ to protect and preserve human rights, incorporating all the practical facilitations to make all those rights achievable.

It has to be the best framework to feel the pulse of the people and capable of guaranteeing aspirations of the people. The moment it is changed to have features copied from other environments it becomes alienated from being based on the realities of a place where it is going to be applied, it ceases to be functional as aspired but instead shall end up purely ornamental.”
All the problems we have are centred on our rate of economic development and the absence of a National Master Plan to develop our resources to be shared by the whole nation. The lapses and inefficiencies in the ‘Economic Development Sector’ have nothing to do with any weaknesses in the ‘Constitution’. The blame should go to all the Governments that ruled this country from the time of our so-called independence. If we were an affluent nation, the picture would have been different.

Absence of uniformity

It was the uneven distribution of benefits that affected the citizens of this country. The Political parties and their leadership should take the blame for the blunders caused with the help of clueless bureaucracy. All those blunders, together, affected the basic needs of the people. Housing, health facilities, education, transport and the general net income of the people complicated by the ever increasing cost of living have made what our country is now. We are in a bottomless pit and still falling. All those deficiencies are not due to a ‘Bad Constitution’ but due to the ‘Bad Management’ by the custodians, who came to power, when those in power were rejected. Fiery and witty speeches in Parliament and in public would not have altered our situation. Our elections had always been not to select right policies and elect capable and efficient political leaders but to reject those who failed. We do not realize that except for some isolated few, it will be the repetition of the same story.

Urgency for a Constitution

The main and the most immediate factor is the undue pressure from International Sources, the United Nations and some of the Western Democracies which have been misled by the Global Tamil Extremists who are bent on establishing a nation of their own. There is nothing wrong in their establishing a country of their own in a justifiable manner. It is really funny, when it is not done where the real Tamil Civilisation started and where the largest concentration of Tamil people can be found.

The Tamil community in Sri Lanka is a result of continuous exposure to Tamil forces from South India in early history, resulting in an identifiable community. The specialty in Sri Lanka is the fact that the Sinhalese and Sri Lankan Tamil people have the same origins and remained more as an integrated part of this island nation. The presence of such a large number of archaeological sites, is now considered as predominantly Tamil areas, prove the fact that the Tamil Culture got established in those regions, later. However, it is a fact that there is an easily identifiable Tamil community in those regions now and that they should be citizens of Sri Lanka with equal rights.

Then, where did it go wrong? It was with the rise of the community based nationalism. It is an undeniable fact that the post independence governments were controlled by ‘representatives’ of the Sinhala voters and the wrong kind of ‘nationalism’ gave reasons for Tamil politicians to become openly suspicious about the Sinhalese, resulting in behaviours that prompted Sinhalese to become more communal minded. That started the vicious cycle which caused the ‘gap’ to widen. Such an environment never facilitated ‘conciliation’ but prompted ‘segregation’. Continued absence of corrective measures allowed the gaps to become widened and remain. That resulted in the unavoidable growth of a different kind of ‘nationalism’ which had more ‘communal’ features than a united nation of diverse cultures bonded by mutual respect based harmony. Instead, the political leaders of both communities contributed more towards the segregation than towards unity.

That ended up leaving the ‘Tamil Community Politics’ polarizing more in the lines of some kind of an effective solution. Although, it may sound bad from the Sinhalese point of view, Tamil politicians identifying the political situation described as ‘Sinhalese hegemony’, it became a reasonably valid expression. The best way for a Sinhalese to feel and understand the ‘psychology’ and the temperament, is to forget for a moment, that he is a Tamil and try to look around. In the eyes of Tamil leaders, the system looked like a ‘one horse race’. That was how the separatist sentiments became consolidated. It was due to no fault of the ‘Constitutions’ which were in place.

A careful analysis would show that the gap was created first as only a crack due to adventurous Sinhala leaders of the government. Unimportant changes like making Sinhala the State language made life difficult for an ordinary Tamil citizen in a remote village in Jaffna. A silly change like introducing the Sinhala letter ‘Shri’ for vehicle number plates gave enough reasons for extremists to react. How beautifully logical if the ‘Tri’ lingual education was introduced instead? If such a thing happened, would there be a need for ‘Proficiency Bar Examinations’? It was then, a far thinking socialist politician who said “One language two nations and two Languages one nation”. Now we are looking for solutions through ‘Constitutions’.

A Unitary Nation

In reality, what was left behind was the gap that kept the two politicians drifting apart. That caused the Tamil Community to suffer mainly due to the personal attitudes and visions of some political leaders of both communities. They became instrumental in causing the background for such while the leaders of Tamil people who had wrong visions that aggravated instead of bridging the gaps. How can such a position be rectified by a New Constitution?

We had existed in this land, together for over two thousand years. And now we are in a wide new world where co-existence is the answer. That will be the New World Order. It is a time ‘Independent Nations’ form ‘Unions’ to share resources. Here, we try to see ways to go separately. Why cannot we exist together? It is logically more beneficial for both the ‘communities’ as the resources of the whole land can only be available then. But that is an already existing condition, as a Tamil Citizen does not have any barriers to prevent them from being, employed, doing business, and owning property in any part of the country. The so far unforeseen factors shall be many. The present dependency on the Sinhala dominated economy is a must for the Tamil people.

Rivers and irrigation systems shall become new problems. It is easy to say ‘separation is the best’. It will be a continuous case of frictions and problems, especially after such a decision which can make even the very passive Sinhala people to become very communal minded. Why all such unnecessary problems? If the Global Tamil Extremists want a State of their own, let them do that where Tamil Civilisation started and where the largest concentration of Tamil people can be found. Just leave the helpless innocent Sri Lankan Tamils alone. With sincere thinking, Sri Lankan Tamils can solve their problems.

Whatever that happened in the past were connected to weaknesses or the absence in having meaningfully effective Laws and their sincere enforcement. For example, if there was a ‘Trilingual’ education extended to all parts of the country and the same facility standards were maintained, we would have had a beautifully bonded nation for the future rather than promoting boundaries and fences. At present, it is only a few more adjustments that have to be made. If all the crucial government departments consist of citizens from all the communities, what more should have been needed? All the actions of this country would have become more transparent. It was the extremist feelings propagated among Tamil youth that prevented them from joining the government services to a certain extent.

Encouraging separation

Nationalism in Sinhalese dominated politics led by short-sighted politicians committed blunders that added on to the grievances of the Tamil people. Grievances led to frustrations, loss of trust continuing in a vicious cycle making the gaps wider. In every direction were problems and hardships. The Tamil leaders who had been reduced to a set of ‘Ceremonial Politicians’ who became the only link with the outside world, who did not have any say in matters, but the people kept on sending them to Parliament in Colombo.

The turning point came closer and the Tamil youth who started thinking radically had no reasons to promote ‘conciliation’ with some people who had no care for them. Militancy became the medium that could attract attention. Killing of Alfred Duraiappah became a necessity and that began the era of armed conflicts.

The Tamil youth became ‘criminals’ in the eyes of the government, and they always had the ‘sanctuary’ across the sea where, the Sri Lankan government had no jurisdiction. Tamil extremist organizations and the powerful Tamil Nadu politicians gave their help and we know how the Tamil youth from the North and East got trained there.

Main aspects that make the ‘New Constitution’ suspicious and ‘dishonest’
Arbitrary demarcation of Northern and Eastern Provinces as ‘Traditional Homelands of Tamil people in Sri Lanka’ does not hold for two reasons. One is that Sinhalese people were there and got pushed away from time to time by invading Tamil armies shall not qualify such a demarcation. Moreover, it was a demarcation done by the British for administrative conveniences. The archaeological findings prove that Sinhalese people were present in all those areas and they became actually the ancestors of the present Tamil community. Therefore such a demand clearly indicates the motive behind. That is what the Global Tamil Extremists want. Not because they care for the Tamil Community in those regions. The Sri Lankan Tamils in those areas are just an expendable convenience. Like they used Prabhakaran, they are using the people now.
Considering an eventuality like a Federal Arrangement, why is it necessary to have Police Powers reporting to the Chief Minister ? That is to ensure Police Protection that can quietly move in later.

The Central Government cannot touch any violators. All the activities can recommence in a larger scale. The declarations by the present politicians prove their intentions. If they sincerely wish an Independent Police Force to be there, what is stopping them even now? It is a matter of adjusting reporting system and ensuring transparency. Here it is a ‘cloak and dagger’ drama.

Dreams with V8 engines

December 22nd, 2016

What most people, crushed under a massive economic burden, wish for is a square meal. But, well-nourished political endomorphs have no such worries. Every day is Christmas for them. For, Santa is apparently resident in Parliament and takes care of all their needs. Now, they get pocket money to the tune of Rs. 100,000 each a month!

Power is highly addictive and fuels greed and ambitions. Elvis Presley it was who famously likened ambition to a dream with a V8 engine. Many politicians are adept at camouflaging their ambitions; they remind us of Macbeth, who says in an aside, ‘Stars, hide your fires; let not light see my black and deep desires.’ There are, however, times when some of them happen to betray their innermost feelings unwittingly.

Health Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne has said at a public function recently a scholar told him that he is fit to rule the country because of his struggle against the mighty tobacco industry to save the public. He, no doubt, deserves praise for having hit the tobacco giant where it hurts most; he has become a marked target in the process. He has also undertaken to tame Big Pharma and make drug prices affordable. Let him be given the credit for that too; he deserves encouragement and assistance from the public.

We, however, choose to remain non-committal about the eligibility or otherwise of the Health Minister to rule the country.

Many are the politicians and civil society activists who claim the credit for last year’s regime change. Senaratne is one of them. Victory is said to have a thousand fathers while defeat is an orphan. It is not surprising that the ruling coalition is full of born-to-rule types or presidential aspirants. The dental surgeon turned Health Minister’s claim at issue may have prompted the wannabe presidents in the ruling coalition say, “Hell’s teeth, we have another contender!”

There is a little known political party, whose name is a classical example of paradox, Okkoma Wasiyo Okkoma Rajavaru or ‘All are subjects and all are kings’. This kind of egalitarianism is possible only in a utopian society as far as the ordinary people are concerned, but the ruling politicians with king-sized egos and intoxicated with power seem to think they are all kings or okkoma rajavaru.

Dreams powered by V8 engines have made the ruling grandees renege on their promise to campaign for abolishing the executive presidency, which they are now eyeing. It was a bunch of sour grapes for them while they were in the political wilderness. Now that they think it is within their reach, they want to retain it. They are salivating at the prospect of securing the much coveted post. They must be in the same dilemma as Macbeth, who in the aforesaid aside considers the Prince of Cumberland an obstacle in his path: ‘That is a step on which I must fall down or else o’erleap.’

If music is the food of love, then Sri Lankans may agree that the food of treachery is hoppers. It is likely that Dr. Senaratne may be served anything at his bosses’ dinners but hoppers, which the incumbent President is said to have had with his former boss President Rajapaksa on the eve of his defection to challenge the latter in the last presidential race.

Here is some gratuitous advice for the presidential or prime ministerial aspirants in the two main parties. They had better refrain from making public their dreams lest they should put themselves in the cross hairs of their political masters and other ruthless ambitious elements. We have witnessed political versions of the Night of the Long Knives on several occasions in the SLFP, the UNP and the JVP.

Had President Maithripala Sirisena made his presidential ambitions known prematurely as a member of the Rajapaksa Cabinet he would not have been able to contest last year’s presidential election; he would have been either reduced to a political nonentity overnight or even framed and thrown behind bars perhaps into the cell which had become vacant upon the release of the then Gen. Sarath Fonseka a couple of years back. The price he had to pay for staking a claim to premiership is only too well known. Ironically, the boot is now on the other foot.

Let Dr. Senaratne be wished good luck!

Tortoise feathers and incredulity

December 22nd, 2016

Hats off (by those who still wear them), in applause to TULF leader, Mr. V. Anandasangaree (VA) for his forthright condemnation of the recent hikes in salaries, perks and allowances of MPs. As reported in The Island of 2nd of December, he expresses so cogently “It is not morally right for MPs to shower such benefits on themselves while the people are suffering.” He sounds a salutary warning that “This kind of extravagance and disregard for the public, mark the beginning of the end of government.” It would not be easy to express these truths more tellingly. Unfortunately, his appeal to “the moral conscience” of politicians is likely to be as futile as the quest for tortoise feathers. Hence the title for this piece!

The frustration and hopelessness of the public could hardly have been expressed better. It was reported that some cynical bigwig in Government declared that if any MP wished to disagree, he was free to not avail himself of the benefits! Predictably, there will be no takers! It has been said that when rulers are tyrants by choice, subjects become rebels by compunction.

It is probable that the Government is lulled into the belief that the recently enacted (by them) 19th Amendment to the Constitution provides an insurance against being unsettled any earlier than four years. The public are smugly reminded of this regularly. Let us hope, for the sake of our nation, that the road to this goal will be smooth and the ride will not be too bumpy. Recent events suggest this may not be so. Distant rumblings may be a foreboding of storms to come.

There is a widespread belief that these indefensible moves are motivated by a sense of sadism or deadly mischief, but they may besuicidal. The perks of MPs are murky and obscure. These surely cannot be unknown to officials on the staff, down to the clerical and even below. There is surprising, clam-like confidentiality – perhaps ensured by bribery or a fear of being penalized even to the extent of losing their incomparably lucrative employment. Except for the occasional incidental disclosures, mostly in answer to Members’ questions, the book remains firmly shut. We have been told that the cost of a day’s sittings alone of Parliament is Rupees six million, and that the former President cost twenty million Rupees per day! Perhaps, this is regarded as justifiable “to preserve the supremacy of the people and to guarantee the sovereignty and territorial integrity”, whatever these lofty words may mean. I am unaware whether our Parliamentary Staff are governed by an Oath of Secrecy in regard to “all matters” pertaining to Parliament, to justify their reticence. Such a rule is understandable, although indefensible, except where the Security of the State is at risk.

When confronted, our representatives are not slow to cite the Singapore Legislature. It is true that political office in Singapore is richly rewarded. It is also true that our legislature’s quality is in sharp contrast, not only in terms of reward. One has only to peruse the CVs of the Singapore Cabinet and its size. I blush to do so. I make bold to say that with a depressingly small number of exceptions, not one of ours would warrant a second scrutiny. In Sri Lanka, Cabinet Portfolios are recklessly created to satisfy the basest of political designs. If reform is honestly desired, a salutary step would be to include in the Constitution, that the maximum number of Cabinet and other Ministers be laid down in binding election manifestos ahead of the polls. I realize that this is a forlorn hope. To continue this act of day dreaming, dare one suggest also, that the list of duties of each should also be specified? This would be considered an indispensable provision in any respectable organization. Not so, in the case of our Supreme Legislature, although this should be a mandatory provision. Else the current trend will deteriorate into a spectacle of fission of portfolios without limit. We already deserve to be derisively laughed at by anyone who surveys the present scene. To develop the Singapore situation, suffice it to mention that the high salary is all inclusive. If a legislator finds it expedient to occupy a luxury house or to own a fancy car, he would be at perfect liberty to do so – but at his own cost. I have heard it said that except for State Banquets, even the President of the United States pays for his meals and those of his family!

Nowhere is political inequity more manifest than in the matter of vehicle permits. There are several categories- judicial, medical, professional, and diplomatic entitled to “Import Duty Concessions” for vehicles. It would be instructive to compare the terms of their concessions relative to what applies to MPs. Almost all the restrictions imposed on others, are probably exempt in the case of politicos. As a case in point, some years ago, a returning Ambassador was entitled to the privilege of importing a car, but constrained by a number of conditions. It had to be of a c.i.f value not exceeding U.S. dollars 8,000. In comparison, at that time, an MP was entitled to U.S. dollars 37,500. Now the gap is probably wider, and the disparity even more so. Sale of the permit was unthinkable. The vehicle had to arrive within six months of return. The privilege was only once in a lifetime. Proof could be demanded of having a private car during the term of office abroad. The vehicle could not be transferred or sold for ten years. This was for a person grandly declared to represent the whole nation. Contrast this with a person who represents no more than an electorate, and if an appointed MP not even that. All men are equal, however, we are told!

Grant it to MPs and surely, it will not be long before local government panjandrums will seek and be bestowed the same privileges. After all, they too have to attend weddings, funerals, birthdays, and “comings of age” of their constituents- more so being physically closer to their voters! That the adults in political office can offer such puerile and idiotic justifications for these privileges that are already unreasonable, is beyond belief, and does no credit to those in whom the public have reposed such hopeful trust.

Is our nation doomed beyond rescue? Is it merely sufficient to throw away rubbish at periodic elections and have them only replaced by worse?

Will the expressed hope of VA for a “moral conscience” continue to be hopeless – until tortoises evolve to being feathered?

Sri Lankan Sailor Who Once Attacked Rajiv Gandhi Predicts President Sirisena’s Death

A former Sri Lankan sailor, who had attacked visiting Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi with a rifle butt in 1987, was today accused by the government of making an astrological prediction about the death of President Maithripala Sirisena by January 26 next year.

Nimal Bopage, Secretary to the Ministry of Media and Parliamentary Affairs, said he had lodged a complaint with the police for an investigation.

He said Vijitha Rohana Wijemuni, who was jailed for attacking Gandhi, had made an astrological prediction on Facebook about the death of Sirisena.

“This man claims to be an astrologer and he is predicting that the president will be killed by January 26,” Bopage told reporters here.

“We see a conspiracy behind this and have asked the police to investigate because we suspect this to be part of a wider plot to assassinate the president,” he said.

“We had previously complained to cyber crime agencies on this but that was of no avail,” he said.

Wijemuni was part of a naval guard of honour in July, 1987 when Gandhi was visiting Colombo to sign the Indo-Lanka Peace Accord which led to the Indian Peace Keeping Force being stationed in Sri Lanka’s north and east provinces as part of India’s efforts to mediate in Sri Lanka’s separatist civil war at the time.

As Gandhi walked past inspecting the guard of honour, Wijemuni raised his rifle and attempted to attack the then prime minister who narrowly escaped.

Wijemuni was court-martialled and after his jail term, became an astrologer.

Here is the video clip of him attacking the then PM, Rajiv Gandhi:

Social media websites under Govt. threat: The joint opposition

The joint opposition today charged the news forecasting and social media websites including the Facebook were under threat of the government’s several bigwigs due to their necessity to ban those websites in Sri Lanka.

Addressing a media briefing, joint opposition member and MP Dullas Alahapperuma said it was evident from the recent incident where a journalist had being assaulted by the Navy Commander at the Hambantota Harbour.

The government has come to power with the support of these news forecasting and social media websites. But at present the government is trying to suppress the same media institutions,” he added.

He said the joint opposition has appreciated the Parliamentary Reforms and Mass Media Ministry’s Secretary Nimal Bopage’s refusal to sign the agreement to provide vehicles on lease terms to 58 MPs holding chairmanships in Divisional Coordinating Committees.

He has been told to sign or resign by the Prime Minister. Despite of such a condition he has strictly refused to put his signature on the agreement. We highly appreciate his decision to stand firm on his decision as a government worker even though we had issues with him before,” he added.

Meanwhile, joint opposition leader and MP Dinesh Gunewardena said the joint opposition would be prevailed as the force which would create the next government in future.

Throughout this year, we have stood for the people and have intervened in each and every significant incident as a responsible opposition party to the government,” he added. (Kalathma Jayawardhane)

DAY-DREAMING OF INDIAN POLITICIANS

December 21st, 2016

ALI SUKHANVER

Indian Home Minister Rajnath Singh said while speaking to a gathering in Indian-held Kashmir a few days back, Pakistan would soon be in ten pieces if cross-border terrorism does not come to an end.” According to the Times of India, he further said, Pakistan has been divided into 2 countries in 1971. If it does not stop cross-border terrorism, it will soon be in 10 pieces.” It is possible that this statement of Rajnath Singh might have elevated his political status within a limited circle but for Pakistan such foolish statements have no importance or value. It has been a very old tradition of the Indian politicians, particularly of those belonging to the BJP to blame, threat and to warn Pakistan because they are misguided by their misconception that by doing so they can win the hearts of the Indian people. It is a day-light fact that there is no hatred for Pakistan among the Indian people. Every year so many delegates from India come to visit Pakistan and so many go there from this side and no one ever complains of any misbehave or maltreatment in either country. Different businessmen from Pakistan have very close business relations with the Indian business community and there are so many who are engaged in joint trade ventures in other parts of the world too. India is a country of more than 138,188,240 Muslims according to India’s 2011census. This number equates to roughly 13.4 percent of the country’s population which at the time was over 1 billion people. Even today Islam is the second most popular religion in India. So it is almost next to impossible for the people of Pakistan to hate a country where their Muslim brothers are living in such a large number. It is also true that there is a small fraction of the Hindu extremists who are a continuous threat not only to the Muslims but also to the Christians, Sikhs and to the low-caste Hindus too. But in BJP, these Hindu extremists are in majority.

The present statement of Rajnath Singh has another reference too. Just three days ahead of the anniversary of Fall of Dacca, this statement was issued simply to claim the responsibility of the Bangladesh conspiracy but dear Rajnath Singh innocently forgot that Pakistan of today is not the Pakistan of 1971. Those were the days when Pakistan was still in its infancy; lack of resources, shortage of means and deficiency of the required reserves; Pakistan was facing a lot of problems and above all the biggest problem was the distance. The air travel (bird fly) shortest distance between Bangladesh and Pakistan is 2,208 km which is about 1,372 miles. If we travel by air on an airplane with average speed of 560 miles per hour it takes 2.45 hours to reach Bangladesh from Pakistan. Those days there was no direct route between East Pakistan and West Pakistan There were two indirect routes: the Sea Route via Colombo to Dhaka and the Air Corridor over India. Mr. Rajnath Singh might be remembering that in 1971 India suspended its Air Corridor for Pakistan. It was Pakistan’s old friend Srilanka who came forward to support Pakistan and provided aerial as well as sea route to Pakistan Air Force to reach West Pakistan though that route was too lengthy and costly as well. But today Pakistan is a nuclear power with its own ordinance and ammunition factories where from fighter planes to tanks and missiles, all war weapons of finest quality are manufactured. Pakistan was not need of the world those days, but now it is the focus of the whole world. Pakistan has become the game-changer with the marvelous China Pakistan Economic Corridor. So Mr. Rajnath Singh must come out of his world of oblivion and instead of dreaming of Pakistan’s dividing into ten parts, he must take care of his own country’s ‘indigenous’  separatist movements which are getting stronger and stronger day by day. Since he is the home-minister of India, officially it is his moral and political responsibility to concentrate upon the separatist movement in Assam, the Naxalite–Maoist insurgency, Dravida Nadu movement and the Khalistan movement and the ‘Atoot Ang’ Kashmir. There are issues regarding the uneasiness and restlessness of the low-caste Hindus, Christians and other minorities; there is a state of agitation over ban on currency notes; crime and corruption rate is rapidly increasing; Mr. Rajnath Singh must come out of his stupid day-dreaming and concentrate upon these serious issues.
