We all know that all right thinking and sane Tamils and Muslims accept that this is the land of the Sinhala people (Sinhaladveepa or Lankadveepa) as it had been known for the past 2500 years or more.  I don’t think there is any debate over that non-negotiable fact by any sensible Tamil or Muslim or any other sane man on earth. They also know that Sinhala Kings and people in the yore have provided safety and security to all ethnic and religious minorities in times of their distress; of course other than in instances where they have openly challenge the formers sovereignty over their motherland. This is what they did to Cholas and Maghas when they invaded northern Lanka from the 2^nd century up to the 13^th C. When Muslims rushed to King Senarath of Kandy in distress, when they were massacred by the Portuguese in the south western littorals, they were settled in Panamapttuwa and provided safety   by King Senarath on Sinhale land. Muslims were also given lands and accommodated in different parts of the country by all Sinhala Kings to carry on their business safely. They were also given permission to marry Sinhala women. Ungrateful and shameless jihadists like Hakeem who have forgotten history and jump from this party to that party, I am sure will never be pardoned by Allah for the disgraceful manner they behave and betray the Sinhala people who gave them protection accommodation.

Even the South Indian Tamils who were left behind by the invaders in the past or those who came here subsequently for trade or brought by the Dutch and British as labourers to work on their tobacco farms in Jaffna and other menial jobs were absorbed as an integral part of the Sinhala society without any discrimination. But unfortunately all these ungrateful remnants have forgotten their past. Unfortunately they forgot that they were on somebody else’s land and they adopted the proverbial ‘itteye geta Vedunu Kaballeya’s attitude  (Kaballeya-Pangolin) that got in to the den of porcupine and now trying to ousted the porcupine) and now trying to ousted the native Sinhalese and own their country. This in sum is the crust of the present ethnic problem in Sri Lanka. That is why crazy and power hungry Tamil politicians create problems for the Government by asking for self determination and federal status for this bunch of remnants of South Indian invaders. I have no problem in understanding the attitude of savage murderer like Pirabaharan but it is impossible to fathom the behaviour of people like Sambandan and Vignesvaran who are supposed to be educated and cultured.

Looking back to history we find prominent Tamil leaders like Ponnambalam Ramanadanan and Arunachalam in the early 20^th C fought side by side with the Sinhala leaders to liberate this country from the British. They never claim for a separate Kingdom at that time. They all stood as one nation, Ceylonese (which simply meant the people of the Sinhale which they accepted), as we were named by the colonial powers as it was the name of this country that was handed over to the British under the Kandyan Convention in 1815. Obviously people of Sinahale were naturally Sinhalese. Ethnically they could be Tamils, Muslims or any other. But none of them could claim to be an Indian or Arab. The country up to 1815 was known as Sinhale or Lanka the world over and no one can contest this fact.   Only on 2^nd March 1815 the English named it as Ceylon which again simply means the land of the Sinhalese. As such there was no disagreement between anybody on that issue in the early days. That is why they all together formed the Ceylon National Congress to fight for independence (that is National Congress of Sinhale). The word EELAM, invented by Tigers to call this country also simply meant Sinhale and nothing else. The common South Indian adage ‘EELAM kandavar illam kanukka illei” (A malayali man who sees Lanka or the Sinhale will never come home; word EELAM here means Sinhale) clearly proves the unquenched thirst and greed South Indian hungry Tamils had to conquer this Land throughout history.

The turning point for the split of the Nation began in 1921 when Arunachalam broke away from the Ceylon National Congress to form the Ceylon Tamil Congress thereby dividing the Sinahala nation in to two antagonistic groups as Sinhalese and Tamils for the first time in the history of this country. This was followed by the famous 50, 50 demand by G. G. Ponnambalam in early 1930s and brought to a climax by Chelvanayagam with the formation of Ilankai Tamil Arasukachchi (Lanka Tamil Party), which he dubbed as Federal Party, in 1947. This crazy Tamil communal trend reached its climax with the formation of the separatist militant group LTTE in 1980s adopting the Cholan totem tiger, who waged a barbaric an d savage war against the Sri Lankan Government and peaceful Sinhalese, seeking a separate State called EELAM, paradoxically which also means the Land of the Sinhala people. The initial EELAM Kingdom they conceived as a coastal land covering 1/3 the area of the Island extending from Puttalam in the west to Kataragama in the south eastern end, with 2/3 the coastal belt claiming as the Traditional Homeland of Tamils who constitute less than 5% of the total population of this Island nation. There has never been a historical Tamil Homeland anywhere in this country, other than temporary rule of Sankili the usurper in the Jaffna Peninsula in the early 16^th century.

Had the Ceylon National Congress, where all Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim leaders worked together continued until 1948 and the name of the country Sinhale restored at Independence and Tamils had not started their wild communal cry, definitely this country with its enormous resources would have been a paradise on earth by now. Squarely I attribute all the devastations and setbacks since independence to the aforesaid communal and racist approach adopted by Tamil politicians who were brainwashed by the Colonial British. British planted the seeds of communal hatred on this Island to keep the nation divided. Adding further complication to this issue now the Muslims, who were given shelter and security, also claim a distinct nationality and a separate territory as a bunch of ungrateful intruders also have started to add additional fuel to this communal fire. This was started by Ashroff and now continued by people like Hakeem, Rishard Badurdeen and Asad Sali. These idiots always talk of ‘our people’ meaning Muslims. This clearly proves that they serve only Muslim interest.

Added to this the Estate sector Tamils leaders also have started to follow suit by trying to establish a separate identity and  a separate territory -Malayanadu right at the centre of this country. Tamils and Muslims have now joined hands, though they are sworn enemies, in theory, as Tamil speaking people to make things even worse. Adding fuel to the burning fire former colonial power England now led by America and Sri Lanka’s traditional and eternal enemy India have thrown their full weight to destroy the Sinhala Buddhist civilization in this country. This trend is clearly seen with the direct intervention by the Ambassadors of these countries in all the country’s internal matters highlighted by the recent Presidential Election.

The tragedy is that none of the Tamil and Muslim politicians are prepared to accept this country as the land of the Sinhalese. The so-called Sinhala leaders also have miserably failed to assert and get the world to accept that this is the Land of the Sinhalese as it had been for 2500 years. Over the past several years the minorities, particularly the Tamils have been busy inventing new histories to prove their claims to the land. Both Tamils and Muslims want to have separate kingdoms within Lanka. Tamil politicians wants to have an EELAM here and Muslims like Hakeem, Badurdeen and Asad Sali wants to make this an Arabia and push the Sinhalese in to the Indian Ocean. They never understand the futility of this day dream. Indian invaders starting from Sena Guttika in the 2^nd century BC and ending up with Cholian Kalinga Maga in the 12^th century and the latest Pirapaharan the LTTE leader have failed to do this thanks to our Great Kings like Dutugemunu and Vijaya bahu and the patriotic men in the past and to our beloved leader Mahinda Rajapaksa, the Secretary to the Ministry of Defense and the members of three forces and the patriotic people in modern history 2009.

Therefore at least now these communal Tamil and Muslim politicians must realize that theirs is only a pipe dream that could never be realized as long as a single Sinhala man or women is alive in this country. They were the people who invented settlements in this country :they were the people  who made nearly 15,000 irrigation tanks all over the country culminating in Parakrama samudraya (sea of Parakrama 6000 acres in extent) in Polonnaruwa and canals and paddy fields they were the people who made temples and massive Stupas and colossal Buddhist religious structure carved living monumental statues like samadhhi statue in Anuradhapura, Avukana and Polonnaruwa Galviharaya; they were the people who made world wonders like famous Sigiriya frescoes and in short they were the architects of the ‘Wonder that is Sri Lankan civilization’ an ancient heritage to the whole world from the 3^rd Century BC to date. I challenge any Tamil or Muslim politician or an academic historian to show me a single archaeological edifice of this magnitude constructed by their so-called Kings who were supposed to have ruled this country. It was the Sinhalese who had sacrificed the lives in millions over the centuries to defend this country against firstly, from South India and from the West thereafter. There wasn’t a single Tamil or a Muslim to my knowledge who had fought or died in defense of this country.

You will recall how Sinhala people have been shifting from place to place like gypsies in desperation to save this civilization from the ruthless south Indian invaders throughout history starting from Anuradhapura onwards. Then Polonnaruwa, Yapahuwa, Dambadeniya, Kurunegala. Gampola, Dambadeniya, Kotte and finally Senkadagala. Even at present the ruins of the burned down Palace of King Parakramabahu in Polonnaruwa bares witness to the kind of vandalism these barbarous South Indian invaders have inflicted on this great civilization. All this is part of our true history. And no one should expect the Sinhalese to forget such savages and barbaric vandalism in the name of reconciliation

Therefore if they and their followers want to live here as Sri Lankan citizens

1 They must immediately give up all their claims for separate Kingdoms and separate identity

2they must accept this country as the de facto and de jure land of the Sinhala Buddhist people

3 Agree to live as brothers and sisters of the Sinhalese without trying to be the owners of the land and ousted them from their motherland

4 give up all attachment to India and Arabia and resolve to live as countrymen of the Sinhale or Sri Lanka.

5 If this is not possible then they have to find their own countries and vanish from this Lanka of the Sinhalese without creating problems for us and themselves as well.

On the other hand the best advice I can give to those rootless cosmopolitan Singalese people like Ranil, Mangala, Wijedasa Rajapaksa and Wickramabahu and all others of the same genre is please immediately stop betraying the Motherland and the Sinhala people any more.  If you can’t do so please keep out of politics and mind some other business that keeps you people going.

Meanwhile the Sinhala politicians who run after Tamils and Muslims begging for their votes should also immediately stop this dirty game. Division of the Sinhala vote as UNP, SLFP is the main reason behind the increased bargaining power of the minorities. This situation can never be overcome until either the main Sinhala parties get together or the Tamil and Muslim politicians change their stance and give up their communal politics and concede to the reality  that they are only minor ethnic groups living in a country where the Sinhala people forms the majority. I am sure you all know what happened to the frog that tried to be as big as a water buffaloa?

                             My Appeal to the nation!    

All Sinhalese must unite under one banner, under an unassailable Sinhala leadership like of a man like Mahinda Rajapaksa who saved this nation from its virtual subjugation to Tamil terrorists in 2009.

1. I am afraid the way things are currently shaping up in the political scenario in this country it appears as if we are heading for disaster. The main cause for this tragic trend is the lack of a common bondage firstly, among the Sinhalese and then among all ethnic groups as a nation. Until and unless the three main communities such as the Sinhalese, Tamils and Muslims stands under one banner as one nation this problem will never be resolved. Even if you fight as long as the sun and moon shall last this problem will remain unsolved and intractable. The irony is, it is the politicians of Tamil and Muslim communities who ignite communal hatred and fan the communal fires for political gain, though the common people of all three communities are ever ready to live together as one nation.
2. If you can  live together, work and do business together, till the land together, eat together, dress alike, go to the same temple together, worship the same gods, intermarry why the hell you people can’t think of the country and the posterity together and do politics together? You have already wasted nearly 68 years of your precious life fighting with the Sinhalese and having brought disaster to tens of thousands of innocent Sinhalese as well as Tamils, crippled the country’s economy with even darker clouds hanging over this beautiful Island. I want you to address your own conscience and find answers to these questions without indulging in vicious ethnic thinking any more. The day you do that you all will be hailed and worshiped as heroes and the saviours of this beautiful Island nation and its proud civilization and unique heritage by all citizens in this country.

I appeal to all Tamil and Muslim politicians to understand this reality, as I have outlined above, and give up communal politics at least now without making the mistake you did almost for 100 years. Wind up your communal political parties before the Government does it, give up selfish and narrow communal politics and rally round the major national parties to build up a peaceful and prosperous Sri Lanka without gambling with the destiny of a nation. Give up your day dream of Eelam and Khalistan. Let the legacy of communal hatred and suspicion your predecessors instilled in you be discarded and forgotten forever and let us together begin a new civilization and a new culture in the name of posterity and a new Sri Lanka.

In the event they don’t listen I strongly urge the Government to ban all communal political parties like the TNA and SLMC forth with as they pose a serious threat to territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of this Island nation.

The inquisitorial type proceedings we are witnessing today at the UNHRC in Geneva in the name of Human Rights are nothing but a sham. In a nutshell  the UNHRC sessions are full of hypocrisy and humbug.

An abuse of process in the most shameful manner.  It reminds us of the crazy times of the Christian Inquisition in Europe which lasted for over 600 years where people who simply questioned religious dogma or did not agree with the prevailing orthodoxy were dragged to a fake trial where the accused were presumed guilty until proven innocent which was almost impossible. A mere accusation was sufficient to establish guilt.

The accused was neither given a list of the charges nor allowed to defend themselves nor allowed to retain a lawyer. The process of natural justice was honoured in the breach. There were both procedural flaws as well as substantive law bias against the accused. Punishment was unduly harsh usually a sentence of death in an abominable cruel way i.e. being thrown to the fire or burnt at the stake.

No civilization is lily white in terms of inhumanity towards others. But in the race to find the dubious winner of planned inhumanity or deliberate destruction of other civilizations spread around the world or holocausts or mass murder of entire races the western civilization takes the cake. It has been brutal towards both man and animal because its fundamental orientation is based on the totally wrong notion ‘the world exists to serve us’. Therefore everyone else that stands in the way whether he be the black man, brown man or yellow man or nature ( including all other living creatures) must yield to the superimposing will and ‘justice’ of the white man.

Gandhi’s views on Western Civilization

When Mahatma Gandhi was asked by a reporter, what he thought of western civilization? Gandhi gave an acerbic answer. He said that ‘ it would be a good idea’.

This is one of Gandhi’s most famous, and perhaps most clichéd, quotations. There is a lot of sarcasm in Gandhi’s retort. The reporter aims to get a good quote. Gandhi basically dupes him with a tongue in cheek answer.

Gandhi makes his opinion of Western Civilization perfectly clear by implying that it doesn’t exist—the current model of Western Civilization cannot, in Gandhi’s opinion, be viewed as civilized at all.

Gandhi often referred to Western Civilization in his writings and speeches. He was reluctant to hold it in high regard and was never restrained in holding industrialized civilization to be a curse, a disease because of its materialistic, consumer-oriented goals.

Gandhi given his sustained legal training in South Africa as a Barrister in his younger days was never at a loss for words. In another one of his speeches, he made critical remarks of Western materialism, saying, I wholeheartedly detest this mad desire to destroy distance and time, to increase animal appetites, and go to the ends of the earth in search of their satisfaction. If modern civilization stands for all this, and I have understood it to do so, I call it satanic.”

Gandhi went further and we find quotations of his comparing Europe to the spirit of Satan.  Gandhi had an innate love for his beloved India and he had a lingering fear that India might one day become a ‘westernized’ nation. In another one of his speeches, Gandhi expounds on this theme:

India’s destiny lies not along the bloody way of the West, of which she shows signs of tiredness, but along the bloodless way of peace that comes from a simple and godly life. India is in danger of losing her soul. She cannot lose it and live. She must not therefore lazily and helplessly say, ‘I cannot escape the onrush from the West.’ She must be strong enough to resist it for her own sake and that of the world. European civilization is no doubt suited for the Europeans, but it will mean ruin for India, if we endeavor to copy it.”

The likes of Gandhi or the type of moral leadership that Gandhi gave not only to India but the whole of Asia is no more.  Instead of the independence of spirit and defiance that Indian leaders of the type of Gandhi, Nehru, Subhas Chandra Bose or even Sardar Vallabhai Patel (man of steel) showed in their heyday we see in today’s leadership of India a poor substitute in crass crawling and servility to imperial western powers unbefitting a great Asian nation.

Re-kindle the Spirit of Asia

We must re- kindle the spirit of Asia. Sri Lanka belongs to Asia. We are part of the great civilizations of Asia. An insult to one is an insult to all – all of Asia who are united by a shared past and still retain pride in our beautiful and elegant cultures and common destiny. The Human Rights discourse of the West is nothing but a farce: a shallow game of the white man for the entertainment of the white race to mock at other races black, brown and yellow on a moral premise where the biggest violators in history have been the very white race now pointing the finger at others.

The challenge before the non – European races is to break away from this trap. Not to put or allow someone else to put a noose around our neck. UNHRC represents that trap. There is no justice there. It has been converted into pure theatre to make fun of the weak, meek and the defiant small nations. The same old colonial game of White Man’s Burden but in a new manifestation of protecting human rights.

In a sense the charade at UNHRC is a blessing in disguise. It has awoken us all – Sinhalese, Tamil and Muslim and all others who call Sri Lanka their home.

We must remain bold and defiant. Even if we get one vote in Geneva let us accept defeat with our heads high. The world applauds the defiant – those who stand their ground against overwhelming and superior forces. Moral cowardice is a trait of the failure. It is clear to anyone except the sinister who visits the North of Sri Lanka today and witness the great efforts being made to develop, resettle and spread economic benefits without discrimination. The people in Sri Lanka wish to leave in peace. Let outsiders not interfere or disturb the prevailing peace in the country.

Much of the conflict in the world comes from the colonial mindset of those who want to re-colonise this world. These are the real war mongers. It is time that the rest of the world stand up, join hands and call spade a spade.

European Union – Double Standards

It is unfortunate but it must be asserted that the European Union (EU) is part of the witch hunt directed against Sri Lanka at the UNHRC.  EU never fails to engage in moralising or preach on human rights and the like to poor third world countries whose continuing deprivation is largely due to the long years of colonial rule under members of the EU.

A number of EU members are former Colonial countries e.g. Spain, Portugal, Belgium, France, Britain and Netherlands among others, that had vast empires and built their prosperity on the backs of resource rich third world countries, but which have never been brought to justice or called to account for crimes against humanity during the period of colonial rule.

EU which is quick to finger point at other nations e.g. Sri Lanka, about human rights abuses has never properly examined or debated the unpleasant history of its EU member experience in the colonial wars all around the world. These European countries suffer from collective amnesia when it comes to the self – examination of the criminal behaviour of their own citizens in other countries both past and present.

Experiment with ideas from the East as basis of conflict resolution

It is time that the civilized world begin to experiment with ideas emanating from the three main Eastern Civilizations namely Japanese, Chinese and Indian as the basis of conflict resolution.

We have friends in Asia that we can tap into through historical bonds in Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Maldives, Malaysia, China, Laos, Japan, Korea, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal, Philippines etc. This is quite formidable.

We must never forget that the founding charter of UNESCO lays down a cherished goal influenced heavily by the spirit of Buddhism Since wars begin in the minds of men, it is in the minds of men that the defences of peace must be constructed.”

The persecution mania of the UNHRC stands in total contradiction to the peace ideals that UNESCO is trying to promote.

As the centre of gravity of global power shifts to the East, the leaders of Asia must not shirk their most important challenge and responsibility  – to give moral leadership to the world at a time when the West is struggling to maintain even a pretense of morality  in their interaction with other countries as we see in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria, Sudan, Venezuela, and now Ukraine.

An International Conference on the theme of Global Moral Leadership on the initiative of Asian nations would be most opportune at this time.

ඉංගිරිසියෙන් කතා කර කර චණ්ඩින්ව බේරන්න ආවා. තාත්තාට විරුද්ධව නඩු දානවා කියල බය කලා. තාත්තා
කිවුවා එල්ලුම් ගස් යැවුවත් ඒ ගමන නවත්තන්නේ නැහැ කියල. එදා එහෙම කරපු නිසා තමයි දුවේ අද ඔයා
ලස්සනට ඇඳගෙන, හොඳට ඉගෙනගෙන නිදහස් ලස්සන ජීවිතයක් ගතකරන්නෙ.

ඒක හරි වැඩක්නෙ. මට නම් හිතෙන හැටියට අපිව බේරා ගත්ත කැප වීමත් එක්ක බැලුවහම තාත්තා අතින්
වෙලා තියෙන්නෙ සුළු වැරදි. අපි ඒ වැරදි වලට සමාව දිය යුතුයි. ඇරත් ඒ වැරදි හදන්න පුළුවන් දේවල්.
මට පෙන්නේ මේ හැමෝම සරුව පිත්තල දේවල් පෙන්නල අයියලව නොසෑහෙන්න රවට්ටලා වගෙයි. අයියල දැන්
හැමෝම කොළ මාමල, මුදලාලිලා සහ චන්ඩිලා එක්ක කරන වැඩෙන් අපි හැමෝගෙම අනාගතය අඳුරේ. ඒක
ආපහු හරවන්නත් බැහැ.

මගෙ දුවේ ඒක තේරෙන්නෙ ඔයාටයි, මටයි, තාත්තටයි, උඩ ඉන්න දෙවියන්ටයි විතරයි. මට ඔයා ගැන දුකයි.

දිස්ත්‍රික්ක 15කින් අහඹු ලෙස තෝරාගත් පුද්ගලයින් 1400ක් දෙනා වෙත යොමු කරන ලද ප්‍රශ්න මාලාවක් ඇසුරෙන් සකස්කරන ලද සමීක්ෂණ ප්‍රතිපලයට අනුව එක්සත් ජනතා නිදහස් සන්ධානයට සියයට 63.6ක ඡන්දය භාවිතාකරන බවට අනාවරණය වි තිබේ.

සුදු වෑන් කතා අතනින් මෙතනින් ඇසෙයි. මහින්ද රාජපක්‍ෂ මහතා යෑමට නියමිත මාර්ගවල බෝම්බ තිබී හමුවේ. අකුරැස්සේ දී බීමත් ව සිටි යා යැයි කියන අයකු මහින්ද රාජපක්‍ෂ මහතාගේ අත මිරීකු බවට ප්‍රවෘත්ති හා ඡායාරූප පළවෙයි. එහි දී මහින්ද රාජපක්‍ෂ මහතා අදාළ පුද්ගලයාට පහර දුන් බව දේශදේශාන්තරවල පැතිර ගොස් ඇතැයි ආණ්ඩුවේ ජනමාධ්‍ය හෙළිදරවු කරයි. එය තවත් සිරිකොත හෙළිදරවුවක් බව පැහැදිලි ය. එහෙත් මේ හෙළිදරවුව සඳහා භික්‍ෂූන් වහන්සේ ද සහභාගි වෙති. මේ රටේ ඇතැම් භික්‍ෂූන්  වහන්සේ ගැමුණු රජුට ද විරුද්ධව ක්‍රියා  කර ඇති බැවින් මෙහි පුදුම වීමට දෙයක් නැත. මෙවැනි භික්‍ෂූන් වහන්සේගෙන් පන්සිල් සමාදන්වන ගිහියන්ට දෙවියන්ගේ ම පිහිට ය. 

ඒ අතර නැපෝලියන් බොනපාට් ගැන නවතම මතයක් පළ කර ඇති මෙරට අධ්‍යාපන ඇමති අකිල විරාජ් කාරියවසම් මහතා මහින්ද රාජපක්‍ෂ මහතාට විශේෂ ආරක්‍ෂාවක් දීම ගැන උරණ වී ඇත. අපි කුඩා කල මත්පැනින් සප්පායම් වී වෙරි මරගතේ නොයෙකුත් කතා කීමට පුරුදු වී  සිටි අයට බොනේපාට් (බොනපාට් නොව) යැයි කීවෙමු. අකිල විරාජ් කාරියවසම්  මහතා නැපෝලියන් බොනපාට් පළමු ලෝක මහා යුද්ධය යැයි හැඳින්වෙන්නෙහි දී දැක ඇත්තේ බොනේපාට් කෙනකු ලෙස දැයි නො දනිමු. ඒ කෙසේ වෙතත් ඉතිහාසයට නොබෙල් තෑගි දෙන්නේ නම් අකිල විරාජ්ට 2015 සඳහා ඒ තෑග්ග දීමට තිබිණි. එහෙත් ඔහුගේ නිහතමානීත්වය නිසා ම ඔහු ඒ ත්‍යාගය ප්‍රතික්‍ෂෙප කර ඉතිහාසගත වීමට තිබිණි. 

අකිල විරාජ් කාරියවසම් මහතාට අනුව ඔහු කුරුණෑගල දිස්ත්‍රික්කයේ එ ජා ප කණ්ඩායමේ නායකයා ය. මහින්ද රාජපක්‍ෂ මහතා ඒ දිස්ත්‍රික්කයේ ම සංධාන කණ්ඩායමේ නායකයා ය. අකිල බොනේපාට්ට අනුව දෙදෙනාටම ලැබිය යුත්තේ එක සමාන ආරක්‍ෂාවකි. දෙදෙනාම නායකයෝ ය. ඔහු ඉන් නොනැවති මහින්ද රාජපක්‍ෂට වාදයකට අභියෝග කරයි. පෙර කල රා බී මියකු ද මෙවැනි දේ කළ බවට එකල ජනමාධ්‍යවල වාර්තා වෙයි. 

අකිලගේ නායකයා රනිල් ය. මහින්ද ද රනිල් ද අගමැති අපේක්‍ෂකයෝ වෙති. මෛත්‍රිපාල සිරිසේන මහතා බටහිරයන්ගේ හා එ ජා පක්‍ෂයේ අවශ්‍යතා පරිදි මොන තරම් උත්සාහ කළත් මහින්ද රාජපක්‍ෂ මහතාට අගමැති අපේක්‍ෂකත්වය ලැබීම වැළැක්වීමට  නොහැකි විය. එහෙත් ඒ අපේක්‍ෂකත්වය දුන්නේ ඔහු නොව ශ්‍රී ල නි ප හා සංධාන නායකයන් ය. එයින් පැහැදිලි වන කරුණක් වෙයි. නීතිය අනුව ශ්‍රී ල නි පක්‍ෂයේ ද සංධානයේ ද නායකයා මෛත්‍රිපාල සිරිසේන වුවත් පාක්‍ෂිකයන්ට අනුව ඔහු නායකයා නොවන බව ය. එසේ වුවත් ඔහු ජනාධිපති ය. මහජනයාට ඔහුගේ ජනාධිපතිකම ද හිස් ධුරයක් බවට පත්කිරමේ අවස්ථාවක් අගොස්තු 17 වැනි දා උදාවෙයි. 

මෛත්‍රිපාල සිරිසේන මහතා බටහිරයන් හා ඉන්දීයයන් සමග එකඟ වී ඇත්තේ මැතිවරණයෙන් පසුව ද අකිලගේ ස්වාමියා වූ රනිල් අගමැති කිරීමට ය. මම මෛත්‍රිපාල සිරිසේන සතපහකට විශ්වාස නො කරමි. ඔහු මහින්ද රාජපක්‍ෂ මහතා අගමැති පදවියට පත්කරනු ඇත්තේ වෙන කිසිවක් කිරීමට නොහැකි නම් පමණකි. මෛත්‍රිපාල සිරිසේන මහතා කොටුකිරීමට හැකියාව ඇත්තේ මහජනයාට ය. ඒ මහින්ද රාජපක්‍ෂ මහතාට ඉස්තරම් ලෙස පක්‍ෂපාති (වැනෙන අය නොව) මන්ත්‍රිවරුන් 115 දෙනකු හෝ වැඩි දෙනකු හෝ පාර්ලිමේන්තුවට තෝරා පත්කර එවීමෙනි. එසේ නොවුවහොත් ඩොලර් ඇමතිකම් විසිකෙරෙන රටක කුමක් වේ ද යන්න සිතා ගැනීම අපහසු නැත. අප ක්‍රියා කළ යුත්තේ මෛත්‍රිපාල සිරිසේන මහතා යනු විශ්වාස නොකට යුතු පුද්ගලයකු යන උපකල්පනය පෙරදැරි කර ගෙන ය. 

මෛත්‍රිපාල සිරිසේන රනිල් වික්‍රමසිංහ දුස්සංයෝගය මහින්ද රාජපක්‍ෂට ලබාදිය යුතු උපරිම ආරක්‍ෂාව ලබා නො දෙනු ඇත. ඔවුන් ලබා දෙන  ආරක්‍ෂාව හිස් පත්‍රිකාවලට පමණක් සීමාවනු ඇත. සුදුවෑන් ගැන වරද මහින්ද පිට පැටෙව්ව ද චම්පකලා ද වෙල් විදානේලා ද සුදු වෑන් ගැන දනිති. මහින්ද ඒ ගැන පමණක් නොව බටලන්ද ගැන ද නියම පරීක්‍ෂණ නොපැවැත්වීම ගැන වෑරදි කරුවෙයි. මෙවර බලයට පැමිණීමෙන් පසු එක්නැලිගොඩලා ලසන්තලා අතුරුදහන්වූයේ කෙසේ ද යන්න පිළිබඳ ව  විධිමත් පරීක්‍ෂණ පැවැත්විය යුත්තේ බටලන්ද සහ තවත් දුෂණ හා භීෂණ ගැන පවත්වන අතර ය. අද ආණ්ඩුවේ ආධාරයෙන් බෝසතුන් මෙන් පෙනී සිටින ජ වි පෙ නායකයන් එදා මිනිමැරුවේ කෙසේ ද යන්න ද සොයා බැලි ය යුතු ය. 

අකුරැස්සේදී මහින්ද රාජපක්‍ෂගේ අත මිරිකූ තැනැත්තා එසේ කෙළේ ඔහු ද බොනේපාට් කෙනකු නිසා දැයි නො දනිමි. එහෙත් මේ හොඳ පෙරනිමිත්තක් නො වේ. අද ලංකාවේ වඩාත්ම තර්ජනය ඇත්තේ අකිලටවත්, රනිල්ටවත්, මෛත්‍රිපාලටවත් නොව මහින්දට ය. ඔහුට කිහිප පැත්තකින් තර්ජන වෙයි. කොටි සංවිධානය බටහිරයන්ගේ සම්බන්ධන්ලාගේ හා වෙනත් අයගේ ආධාරයෙන් නැවතත් හිස එසවීමට මාන බලයි. බටහිරයෝ තම ලංකා වසන්තය සාක්‍ෂාත් කර ගැනීම සඳහා මහින්ද ජීවිතයෙන් ම අතුගා දැමීමට උත්සාහ කරති. ඉන්දීයයයෝ ඔවුන්ට ආධාර කරති. රනිල් ද අද කතාකරන්නේ මහින්ද රෙජිමය පරාජය කිරීමට නොව රාජපක්‍ෂලා අතුගා දැමීමට ය. ඔහු බටලන්ද ගැන පමණක් නොව මහා බැංකු කොල්ලය ගැන ද නරක සිහින දකිමින් සිටියි. චම්පක හා සුදු වෑන් අතර සම්බන්ධය, වෙල් විදානේලාගේ කියුම්  කෙරුම් අනුව මහින්ද බලයට පත්වීමට පෙර ම ඔහු අතුගා දැමීමට හැකිනම් එසේ කිරීමට ඔවුන් සිහින දකිනු වැළැක්විය නො හැකි ය. මේ සියල්ලන්ම අද එකතු වී සිටින්නේ රටට ඇති අදරයක් නිසා නො වේ.       

පසුගිය දා වික්‍රමබාහු කරුණාරත්න මහතාගේ පක්‍ෂය ද අනුර දිසානායක මහතාගේ පක්‍ෂයද මහින්දට අරාක්‍ෂාව දීමට විරුද්ධව මානව හිමිකම් කොම්සමට හා අධිකරණයට ගියහ. ඔවුහු ද අකිල විරාජ් කාරියවසම් මහතා කියන දෙයට සමාන දෙයක් කියති. මහින්ද රාජපක්‍ෂ මහතා මැතිවරණයට ඉදිරිපත් වූ සැණින් ඔහුට ඇති තර්ජනය නැති නො වේ. මැතිවරණයට ඉදිරිපත් වීම එකකි. කොටි ත්‍රස්තවාදය පරාජය කිරීම නිසා ඇතිවන තර්ජන තවත් එකකි. මහින්ද රාජපක්‍ෂ මහතා කොටි ත්‍රස්තවාදය පරාජය කෙළේ ජනාධිපති ලෙස ය. ජනාධිපති ලෙස ඒ මහතාට හිමිවිය යුතු ආරක්‍ෂාව අබමල් රේණුවකින් වුවත් අඩුකිරීමට කතා කරන්නෝ ඒ මහතාගේ ඝාතකයන් විය හැකි අයගේ ද සිංහල විරෝධීන්ගේ ද ආධාර කරුවෝ පමණක් වෙති.

දහනවවැනි ව්‍යවස්ථා සංශෝධනයෙන් පසු විධායක ජනාධිපති බලතල කැපී පාර්ලිමේන්තුවට බලය ලැබීණි යැයි සෝභිත හිමි ඇතුළු සාධාරණ සමාජයීය සාමාජිකයෝ රට දෙවනත් කළහ. එහෙත් තවමත් අගමැති පත්කරන්නේ ජනාධිපති මතය පරිදි ය. මෛත්‍රිපාලගේ කුප්‍රසිද්ධ ජඩ ජූලි ප්‍රකාශනයෙන් කියැවුණේ ඔහු කිසි දිනෙක මහින්ද රාජපක්‍ෂ අගමැති ලෙස පත් නොකරන බව ය. වෙනත් වචනවලින් කියන්නේ නම් ඔහු මැතිවරණයට ද පෙර පාර්ලිමේන්තුවේ වැඩි බලය ඇත්තේ කාහට ද යන්න පිළිබඳ තම මතය සකස් කර අවසන් ය. 

අගමැති පත් කිරීමේ දී බලපාන්නේ ජනාධිපතිගේ මතය බව පැහැදිලි ය. එහෙත් පෘථග්ජනයකු මන්ත්‍රිවරුන් තෝරා පත්කර ගැනීමටත් පෙර වැඩි දෙනාගේ කැමැත්ත ඇත්තේ (නැත්තේ) කාහට දැයි දැන ගත්තේ කෙසේ ද යන්න පැහැදිලි නැත. එය බම්බු ප්‍රජාතන්ත්‍රවාදයටවත් එකඟ නො වේ. පැහැදිලි ව ම මෛත්‍රීපාලගේ මතයට අනුව මහින්දට නව පාර්ලිමේන්තුවේ මන්ත්‍රීවරුන්ගේ වැඩි කැමැත්තක් නැත. 

මෙයින් කියැවෙන්නේ මෛත්‍රිපාල වෙනත් අය (තමන් පොදු අපේක්‍ෂකයා බවට පත්කළ බටහිරයන් ඉන්දීයයන් ආදීන්) සමග මහින්ද අගමැති ලෙස පත් නොකිරීමට එකඟතාවකට දැනටමත් පැමිණ ඇති බව ය. මේ එකඟතාව දේව කැමැත්තක් ලෙස සැලකීමට රනිල් හා චම්පක අපට කියයි. ඔවුන් කියන්නේ මහින්දට ඡන්දය දීමෙන් පළක් නොවන බව ය. ඔවුන් නොකියා කියන්නේ මෛත්‍රිපාල රනිල් අගමැති ලෙස පත්කරන බවත් එබැවින් සංධානයට ඡන්දය දීම ඵල රහිත බවත් ය. 

මෙරට අගමැති කවුද යන්න අවසාන වශයෙන් තීරණය කරන්නේ මෙරට ජනතාව මිස මෛත්‍රිපාලවත්, රනිල්වත්, විදේශීය රටවල ඔත්තු සේවාවල නිලධාරීන්වත් නො වේ. මෛත්‍රිපාල සත පහකට විශ්වාස නැති පුද්ගලයකු බව අපි මුල සිට ම කීවෙමු. මෛත්‍රිපාලගේ හා මහින්දගේ ඊනියා සම්මුතිය ජයග්‍රහණයක් ලෙස සංධානයේ ඇතැම් නායකයන් පෙන්වද්දී අප කියා සිටියේ එයින් මුළා නොවිය යුතු බව ය. මෛත්‍රිපාල අද එන්නේ මොකාටද යන්න දැනගැනීමට ඊනියා දේශපාලන විචාරකයකු වීම අවශ්‍ය නො වේ. 

මෛත්‍රිපාල හැකි කමක් ඇත්නම් ජනවාරි 9 වැනි දා කළ දේ අගොස්තු 18/19 වැනි දා ද කරනු ඇත. ඔහු හැකිනම් රනිල් පික්පොකට් අගමැති කරනු ඇත. එසේ නොහැකි නම් ශ්‍රී ල නි පක්‍ෂයේ මහින්ද නොවන අයකු අගමැති කරනු ඇත. එහි දී මුදල් ලබාදීම්  ශ්‍රී ල නි පක්‍ෂයෙන්් මන්ත්‍රීන් බා ගැනීම්, ආදිය සැලසුම් කෙරෙන බව රහසක් විය නො හැකි ය. අදත් පික්පොකට් ආණ්ඩුවේ ඇමතිවරුන් ලෙස සේවය කරන ශ්‍රී ල නි පාක්‍ෂිකයෝ වෙති. ඔවුහු බොරු ප්‍රජාතන්ත්‍රවාදයක් ගැන කතා කරමින් ඔවුන් ඇමති තනතුරු අත්හරින්නේ ද නැද්ද යන වග ශ්‍රී ල නි ප මධ්‍යම කාරක සභාව ගත යුතු යැයි කියමින් කල් මරති. ඔවුන්ට අවශ්‍ය නම් කාගෙන්වත් නොඅසා තනතුරු අත්හැරිය හැකි ය. 

ජනතාවට මෛත්‍රිපාල පැරදවිය හැකි ය. පළමුවෙන් ම කළ යුත්තේ සංධානයට මන්ත්‍රීවරුන් 125 දෙනකුට වැඩි සංඛ්‍යාවක් ලබා දී මන්ත්‍රින් බා ගැනීමට ඇති ඉඩකඩ අවම කිරීම ය. එවිට බොහෝ විට මෛත්‍රිපාලට සංධානයෙන් අගමැති කෙනකු පත් නොකර සිටීමට නොහැකි වනු ඇත. දෙවනුව මනාප සටනේ දී මහින්ද සමග නොසැලී සිටින අයට පමණක් මනාප දීමට ඉටාගත යුතු ය. චන්ද්‍රිකා, මෛත්‍රිපාල ආදීන් සමග කටයුතු කරන සංධානයේ අපේක්‍ෂකයන්ට මනාපයක් නොදිය යුතු ය. ඔවුන්ට මනාප දී ඔවුන් මන්ත්‍රීවරුන් වුවහොත් ඔවුන් සමග ද එකතු වී මහින්ද අගමැති නොවන බවට මෛත්‍රිපාල වග බලා ගනු ඇත. අද බටහිරයන්ට හා ඉන්දීයයන්ට අප රට ලේ විලක් බවට පත්කිරීමේ අවශ්‍යතාව ඇත. රට අස්ථාවර කිරීම ඔවුන්ගේ අරමුණ වෙයි. එහෙත් අපට කරුණු තේරුම් ගෙන කටයුතු කිරීමෙන් ඔවුන් පරාජය කළ හැකි ය. 

මෙය ශ්‍රී ල නි පක්‍ෂය කැඩීමක් නො වේ. පක්‍ෂයට ද්‍රොහිකම් කර පක්‍ෂය ඝාතනය කළ සෝමාරාම පරදවා ශී්‍රී ල නි පක්‍ෂය ශක්තිමත්ව යළි බිහිකර ගැනීමකි. එහි දී පක්‍ෂය යළි ඉපදෙනු ඇත්තේ මහින්ද සමග මිස ඝාතකයන් සමග නො වේ.

Attorney Dharshan Weerasekera has written to the President of the United Nations General Assembly enumerating certain concerns he has with the UNHRC’s Sri Lanka investigation, and indicating that if these concerns are not addressed he will explore ways of gaining redress through domestic law.

REQUESTING YOUR HELP TO ADDRESS A GRAVE INJUSTICE BEING PERPETRATED AGAINST SRI LANKA BY THE HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL

I am a citizen of Sri Lanka.

Since 2012, the Human Rights Council has adopted three resolutions against Sri Lanka on the subject of accountability” for violations of humanitarian law and human rights law allegedly committed during the civil war that ended in May 2009.

The resolution in March 2014 authorized an investigation into the aforesaid alleged violations, to be carried out by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).

I have evidence to show that certain irregularities and/or illegalities were committed both in the manner the respective resolutions were pursued at the Council, as well as the way the investigation was finally authorized in March-2014.

The aforesaid evidence is contained in four essays, three of which were originally published in the well-respected online magazine, Foreign Policy Journal.  Two of those essays were subsequently posted on the website of the Peace Palace Library, the prestigious library attached to The Hague.

I re-published the aforesaid four essays in two books, the first (The UN’s Relentless Pursuit of Sri Lanka, and the need for effective counter-measures) in 2013, and the second (The UN’s Subversion of International Law:  The Sri Lanka Story) in 2015.

(I have taken the liberty to forward two copies of the said books along with this letter, for your convenience.)

In the course of my research over the past three years, I found that, one, the call for an international investigation was based on the High Commissioner’s recommendation in a series of reports in 2013 and 2014, and two, the basis for the High Commissioner’s aforesaid recommendation was the recommendation for an international investigation made in the Report of the Secretary General’s Panel of Experts (POE) in 2011.

1 The POE was a document produced for the Secretary General’s personal use, and not to be submitted in any official capacity to the General Assembly, the Human Rights Council, or any other U.N. organ.

The POE, however, was submitted indirectly to the Human Rights Council, and went on to become the basis for the call for an international investigation by the Council, in 2012, 2013 and 2014.

The POE, since it was not an official document, was never placed on the record at the Human Rights Council, and Sri Lanka never had an opportunity to respond to it directly and officially before that body.

In the circumstances, the Council’s use of the POE as its principal basis for authorizing an international investigation against Sri Lanka is illegal.

If my surmises above are correct, the investigation is illegal, and Sri Lanka has been subjected—indeed continues to be subjected—to a grave injustice at the Human Rights Council.

Since the Human Rights Council is a creation of the U.N. General Assembly, the responsibility for the aforesaid injustice ultimately rests with the General Assembly itself. The basic problem I have at present is as follows:  given the grave injustice that I consider the UNHRC has committed against Sri Lanka as described herein-before, as a citizen of Sri Lanka, I have no venue at the U.N. where I can have my grievance heard.

In contrast, a country that considers itself wronged by the U.N. can take up the matter at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) by requesting an Advisory Opinion.

Meanwhile, to turn to the Human Rights Council, its Complaint Procedure facility under Resolution 5/1 allows persons and parties to bring to the attention of the Council grave violations of human rights taking place within a country.  But, this facility does not allow complaints to be brought that deal with wrongs the U.N. may have committed against a country.

Thus, to repeat, to the best of my knowledge, there is no forum or venue, within the U.N. where an individual citizen harmed in some way or other by U.N. action against his or her country, can have their complaints heard and legally adjudicated.

In my view, there is a lacuna in international law in respect to the above matter. I am willing to concede that the Founders of the U.N. did not envision a situation where the U.N. would have to answer to complaints by individual citizens of its member countries.

2 The U.N., as originally conceived, was primarily a mechanism to facilitate universal peace:  thus, it was intended as a forum where the Governments of countries (or other designated agencies) could be heard, and not individuals with personal complaints.

In my view, the fact that only Governments (or other designated agencies) can be heard at the U.N. does not mean that, where the U.N.’s actions touch the lives of individual citizens of particular countries adversely, those citizens ought not to have any means of redress.

I am a firm believer in the legal maxim:

Ubi jus, ibi remedium (Equity will not suffer a wrong without a remedy)  I also take as self-evident that, changes in circumstances often necessitate corresponding advances in the law.

Thus, I am now compelled to turn to you, to ask for your help in finding a venue or a forum where I can have my grievance heard within the U.N., or, in the event there is no such forum, your advice on how I can go about initiating changes in the relevant law, to make possible the creation of such a forum.

I must inform you further that, if I cannot find a suitable venue or forum as discussed above, I shall explore ways to gain redress from the U.N. through the domestic laws of my country.

I should like to tax your patience with regard to one final matter, to wit:  explain briefly why you should take an interest in what has happened to Sri Lanka at the UNHRC independently of the personal request I have made above.

In my view, the U.N., for all its faults, remains the best means through which the nations of the world can maintain a modicum of peace among themselves, and also protect and promote human rights.  For this reason, it is imperative that the U.N. not only continue as an institution, but be strengthened.

It is a fact, however, that no institution can remain viable for long, if the public loses faith in it.  Unfortunately, there is a growing perception among many people, particularly in the developing world, that the U.N. has become a tool of certain powerful nations, i.e. an institution that, advertently or inadvertently, allows itself to be used for purposes of furthering the national or geopolitical goals of those powerful nations.

The best example of the type of incident that fosters the above perception is the invasion of Iraq by the United States in 2003, under the pretext of implementing a Security Council resolution.  I shall not repeat here the sordid history of that unfortunate episode.

Suffice it to say almost all experts on the subject, including Americans, now admit that the case for war against Iraq, as presented by its advocates, particularly the United States and Great Britain, was based on obfuscations, fabrications, and outright lies.

3  I shall now turn to the investigation against Sri Lanka.  In my view, the case for the Sri Lanka investigation is also characterized by obfuscations, fabrications, and at times outright lies, though not in as grand a scale as in Iraq.

More ominous, high U.N. officials, including the Secretary General and the High Commissioner, have pushed the investigation in what appears to be a biased and partisan way.

I shall indicate just two instances of the above.

1. a) When the POE was being compiled, a number of newspapers in Sri Lanka reported that certain Tamil Diaspora elements had produced sample letters
2. containing various allegations against the Government, and got their supporters to submit those letters to the Panel via e-mail.  Some of the letters themselves were also published.  (See, How Moon Panel Gathered ‘War Crimes’ Info Revealed,” Shamindra Ferdinando, The Island, 20 April 2012)

To my knowledge, no attempt was made by the Panel, or the Secretary General, to pursue the above allegations.  Meanwhile, all materials related to the POE, including the evidence on which the Panel relied to come to its conclusions, have been sealed for 20 years (on the Secretary General’s orders).  So, no one can check whether in fact the evidence the Panel considered includes sample letters of the type described above.

1. b) When the OHCHR investigation was launched in August 2014, OHCHR announced that the public had till 30 October 2014 to make submissions.  In November, the Government alleged that it had arrested a person who had in his possession 6 complaint forms signed in blank, to be completed later with fabricated eye witness” reports and submitted to OHCHR.

The Government also alleged that the aforesaid suspect had revealed he was working under the supervision of an individual with close connections to a conglomerate of Tamil Political Parties, which conglomerate was one of the most vociferous local advocates of the investigation.

The Government alleged further, that the suspect had revealed he was told by his handlers to inform potential ‘witnesses’ they would receive monetary compensation from the U.N. for their testimony.  (See, Media Statement by the Ministry of External Affairs, 5 November 2014, www.mea.gov.lk)

To my knowledge, the OHCHR made no attempt to follow-up the Government’s allegations.  Instead, the High Commissioner issued a vehement statement accusing the Government of an insidious” attempt to subvert the investigation. The High Commissioner said, inter alia:

4 Since the end of the conflict in 2009, Sri Lanka has continued to obstruct any independent investigation despite the persistent, compelling and widespread allegations that possible serious international crimes were committed by both sides during the conflict in Sri Lanka.”  (See, Zeid condemns persistent disinformation designed to discredit UN investigation on Sri Lanka,” 7 November 2014, www.ohchr.org)

I wish to draw your attention to two points.  First, nowhere in the High Commissioner’s statement does he explicitly deny that the OHCHR, either directly or indirectly, offered money for testimony.

Second, the High Commissioner seems to have made up his mind that the allegations against the Government have merit.  Note, he uses the word compelling” in relation to the allegations against the Government and the LTTE.

(Let’s forget about the LTTE for a moment, because, even if it is eventually found that they committed war crimes, there is no longer anyone to punish, since all the main LTTE leaders were killed during the war.  So, the High Commissioner’s statement actually applies only to the Government.)

The point is that the word compelling” entails a subjective and normative judgment.  How can the High Commissioner decide that the allegations against the Government are compelling” before the investigation is complete?

Presumably, it is the task of the investigation to decide if the allegations are compelling or not.

One should also recall that the High Commissioner’s office is tasked with overseeing the investigation, which means, among other things, the evidence that the Investigating Panel reviews is collected by persons hand-picked by the High Commissioner.

If the High Commissioner, at the very out-set of the investigation, has decided the allegations against the Government are compelling, what are the chances the Panel will conclude anything different, even if we presume the Panel is completely independent?

When one considers matters such as the above, in the context of what is known about the goings-on in the run-up to the Iraq war, it is difficult to avoid the suspicion that something untoward has been done to Sri Lanka at the UNHRC.

(It does not help, meanwhile, that the United States and Great Britain, the two countries—the same two ‘suspects’ if you will—behind the Iraq war, are behind the call for the Sri Lanka investigation also!)

5.In short, to the extent that members of the general public, especially outside Sri Lanka, learn the facts about the Sri Lanka investigation, it puts the spotlight, once again, on the credibility of the United Nations.

Sri Lanka is just one country.  How many other countries are being subjected to similar treatment, or will be in the future?  How many blows to its credibility can the U.N. take before people lose faith in the Organization completely?  And when that happens, as I mentioned earlier, is there any reason for the U.N. to continue in existence at all?

Therefore, I believe it is incumbent on you to take an interest in what has happened to Sri Lanka at the UNHRC, quite independently of my personal request for help in finding a venue or forum within the U.N. where I can have my particular grievances about the investigation heard.

I shall thank you in advance for your kind attention to this matter.

Maithripala succeeded as SLFP President after Mahinda Rajapaksa.  The position was either given to Maithripala or it was taken.   People raised their voices in support of Mahinda. The issue of nominations came up but that obstacle too was overcome. Although NGOs protested and the President made a special statement after nominations were given it did not change the direction in which the political winds were blowing.

This time there were no cutouts of Mahinda anywhere in the country. There were no processions and posters.   Intellectuals and academics, who remained silent up to now, are being drawn towards the Mahinda campaign.

What the incident proves is the shortcomings in the security given to the former President.  Since Mahinda ended a 30-year armed conflict by totally defeating the Tiger terrorists he faces a far greater threat to his life than other previous Presidents.  When former National Security Minister Lalith Athulathmudali – one of the three most powerful cabinet ministers in the J.R. Jayewardene Government – signed the Impeachment Motion President Premadasa reduced the minister’s special security.  Thereafter he had only normal security.

The LTTE took advantage of it and assassinated him on April 23, 1993 at 8.10 p.m.  The body of Ragunathan, the assassin who fired six shots into Athulathmudali was later found at Mugalan Road. But the people did not accept the story. Australia’s Frontline magazine in its June 1993 issue reported that Ragunathan’s body was displayed to divert attention from the real assassin.  Athulathmudali was killed when he was campaigning as Western Province Chief Ministerial Candidate during that year’s Provincial Council Election.

UNP’s Presidential Candidate Gamini Dissanayake was assassinated during a party propaganda meeting at Grandpass on October 24, 1994.  Altogether 61 persons, including Dissanayake, Ministers M.G. Premachandra and Weerasinghe Mallimarachchi, Ossie Abeygunasekera and Dr. Gamini Wijesekera were killed by the LTTE suicide bomber. Chandrika Kumatunga lost an eye in another Tiger bomb blast at Colombo Town Hall grounds on December 18, 1999 during the final propaganda rally held in connection with that month’s Presidential Election. A total of 16 persons died in that explosion.

Eight years earlier, on May 21, 1991a Sri Lankan Tamil female terrorist blew herself up killing Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and many others in Tamil Nadu.

More and more voters are expressing support for the UPFA which includes the SLFP. Cracks have appeared in the vote base that pushed the present government to power under the Swan symbol.   No one will be able to avoid dealing with a parliamentary majority under Mahinda Rajapaksa’s leadership.

The UNP throughout its history was never inclined towards nationalism. Similarly when Chandrika Kumaratunga became the SLFP leader those who helped her to come to power were the pro-separatist Sinhala faction. Under her regime NGOs like Sudu Nelum and Thawalama backed by Government funds tried to brainwash Sinhala people towards supporting separatism. It is this group which is now trying to defeat Mahinda Rajapaksa hook or by crook. Although some of them pretend to be nationalists their roots are in the UNP. It is not surprising they are trying to serve their dubious agenda under the cover of Yahapalanaya (Good Governance).

Mahinda Rajapaksa has come forward to safeguard the country which has been liberated from separatist terrorism and to revive the battered nation. Hence he is caught between Tamil separatists and Islamic extremists.   After the military victory it was the Northern and Eastern Provinces which saw the highest level of development.  During the last Presidential Election the people of North and East helped Maitripala Sirisena – who had TNA and SLMC support – to win by a majority of 654,961 votes. Accordingly, he received on a district basis 179,300 votes from Jaffna, 107,040 votes from the Wanni, 167,791 from Batticaloa, 112,333 from Digamadulla and 88,227 from Trincomalee. The total number of majority votes by which Maitripala Sirisena defeated Mahinda Rajapaksa was 449,072.

The so-called Yahapalana Government is asking what the Mahinda Rajapaksa Government did during the past nine years. The fact is the first four years – from 2005 to May 2009 – were spent on ending the 30-year brutal terrorism which claimed 60,000 lives.  The balance five years were spent on restoring normalcy in the North where people suffered immensely during two decades.

Massive development projects were undertaken to rehabilitate thousands of families displaced by the war. Admittedly there were some shortcomings in this work.  But on the whole it was many steps ahead of what happened during the 17-year UNP rule (1977-1994).

Groups, parties and individuals supportive of Tamil separatism and the ‘Yahapalana’ regime are arguing that politicians who grew up in the old political environment should now retire from politics.  They have forgotten that J.R. Jayawardene who became a Colombo Municipal Councilor at the age of 34 became Executive President only at the age of 72.  When he retired from politics in 1989 he was 83. Sirimavo Bandaranaike, who became Prime Minister for the third time, under the PA Government, remained so until she passed away at the age of 84.  She was in a wheel chair during her last days.

Hence there is no reason why the leader who came into politics at the age of 24 should retire from politics at the age of 69.   The country needs a real leader for a few more years to defend the nation.  After D.S. Senanayake it is only Mahinda Rajapaksa who has had a vision for Sri Lanka.  A UPFA victory at the next General Election means not only defeating a rival political party or alliance but also a defeat of anti-national forces.  Separatist ideas still remain as sparks which can at any moment burst into flames.

According to CAFÉ (Campaign for Free & Fair Election) there have been 372 complaints of violations of election laws up to July 21. The number of complaints on misuse of public property and public sector employees, appointments and transfers is 181. The National Election Monitoring Centre has received 218 complaints.

UNP Ratnapura District Candidate Sarachchandra Ramanayake has been released on Rs. 500,000 personal bail by Ratnapura Additional Magistrate following a charge of forcibly releasing a suspect who was the custody of the Kalawana Police on the night of July 14.  On the night of July 20 the Avissawella police took into custody four persons along with their van when they were violating election laws by screening a propaganda video in support of Colombo District UNP Candidate Justice Minister Wijedasa Rajapaksa in Avissawella Town.  On July 21 a UNP supporter was produced before the Thambuttegama Magistrate for assaulting a grade 7 student of a school in Rajangana accusing him of drawing moustache on Minister Harrison’s photo on an election poster. There have been many such complaints from all over the country

The People’s choice will remain a secret until August 17. Until then we’ll be seeing these nonsensical and comical incidents. Instead of placing before the people party manifestoes and policies what these parties are doing is to attack and insult their rivals. The seven month-performance of the ‘Yahapalana’ Government proves the country needs Mahinda Rajapaksa’s contribution now more than at any time in the past.(The writer is a senior journalist who could be reached at ejournalists@gmail.com)

At the first political campaign of the Tamil National Allaiance, held yesterday at Maruthanarmadam, almost all the TNA speakers mentioned the name of Prabhakaran repeatedly, told Prabhakaran was their leader and the people in the crowd- a handful of thousands, started chanting Prabhakaran .. Prabhakaran,” clapped their hands, whistled and danced in frenzied mood the scene was seen highly emotional.Prabhakaran – What happened to him? was his killing a design?

The meeting which commenced yesterday around 4 PM went on till 10 PM and was presided over by the TNA Leader R.Sampanthan.

Leaders and candidates of the constituent political parties of the TNA – Ilankai Thamil Arasu Kadchchi – ITAK, Tamil Eelam Liberation Organization – TELO, Eelam People Revolutionary Liberation Front – EPRLF, and People Liberation Organization of Tamil Eelam – PLOTE, participated in the political campaign and also addressed in the the meeting.

Candidates of the ITAK – Sivangnam Sritharan, Kandiah Arunthavabalan, Mathini Nelson and few others who addressed, started their speech by announcing Our undisputed leader Prabhakaran, and continued singing hosanna to Prabhakaran, reverberating with emotion.

They said that the struggle for their rights was taken forward on an armed struggle by Velupillai Prabhakaran and now it has been abruptly brought to end adopting despicable measures in the war.

However we continue with our political journey and it was Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam who were responsible for us to bring our struggle to the notice of the international community”, the ITAK speakers pointed out.

Whenever speakers pronounced the name of ‘Prabhakaran’, the crowd started chanting in chorus in mad frenzy and responded their emotion by clapping their hands, whistling and dancing.

Speakers who addressed the meeting said it was you who all used your votes, the powerful tool and brought down the former President Mahinda Rajapaksa from power – the man who was responsible for killing the Tamils in a battle and defeating us the Tamils in an unjust war.

A few election monitors, mainly from the European Union was seen covering the TNA meeting and it was noted that whenever some speakers mentioned the name of Prabhakaran, the crowd resonated and the election monitors were seen making note of it.

When I mentioned indoor air pollution I meant the air inside in general the whole house. Most of the times the air pollution comes from the kitchen due to cooking but there are other things that contribute to air pollution. People burn various kinds of substances such as natural gas, coconut oil lamps, and incenses, many kinds of wood, shells including coconut shells, cashew nuts and even pea nuts. When they burn they give out gases that add to the indoor air pollution. How about kerosene lamps and natural gas in the gas cooker? The vehicle exhaust fumes give a whole trail of pollution.

Some people smoke cigarettes and cigars at home while watching the TV. It has been found out there are 3,800 different chemicals in tobacco that adds to the indoor air pollution.

Radon gas an odourless, colourless radioactive gas that comes from the natural breakdown of uranium in rock and soil. It can seep into homes through cracks in the foundation, floors, and walls. I have witnessed some people in rural areas sleep on the floor without cement or tiles that is just on dry clay floors. Also they use cow droppings on the floor instead of cement. I think this is still found only in very remote villagers in Sri Lanka.

We cannot live without moulds, they are everywhere including on the stale bread even if we kept them for too long. Moulds require moisture to grow and tend to be found in damp basements, refrigerators, air conditioners, humidifiers, mattresses, carpeting, under ceiling panels, or behind walls (if there are chronic water leaks). If you leave a slice bread outside for a few days then you will see a range different coloured moulds growing on it.

Solvents

Household cleaners, degreasers, arts and craft supplies, glues, off-gassing” from newly installed carpets, flooring, particle board, and furniture. People use various detergents to clean the toilets such as bleach. Far too many to mention here but once you go to a shop they get tempted to buy at least one such product. We cannot wash the cups, plates and spoons without some liquid soap or you put them into a dishwasher to clean. Then how about the different kinds of hand washing liquids.

I am sure the ladies know how many kinds of sprays and colognes are used in front of the mirror in the bedroom, they all have their especial odour. That is not the end, what about nail varnishes then lipsticks. Then comes hair sprays and they all have their unique smell spreading all over. Some ladies use hair sprays that long last and ultimate hold all day hold that brushes out easily, leaving hair soft to the touch and gorgeously shiny. They say they are weather protective and a UV filter provides a shield against humidity for 24 hours, preventing frizz and environmental damage. Oh and the best part… no sticky residue and fast drying! The growing up adults buy far too many of these to spray because they get the word to mouth advertising and TV, paper and internet advertising. How about lip sticks, I’m talking about rancid, nasty smells here because I know some of you think that cherry flavored and scented lip gloss is the devil’s work. Lipstick is sticky (that’s why it’s called lipstick, not cause of it’s shape and all lipsticks are made with at least some organic material. We also know that floating particles stick to sticky things and we know that all organic material rots.

Makeup doesn’t last forever. Find out the warning signs for makeup that is no longer good and guidelines for throwing out different types of cosmetics.

Keeping and using makeup beyond its expiry date is not only gross but it’s potentially dangerous. No matter how clean you may be, natural bacteria from your skin makes its way into your eyeshadow, mascara and foundation, which can mean that you’re reapplying that bacteria (after it has had a chance to multiply in your makeup) back onto your skin. Gross. This can lead to rashes and infections, which can be particularly dangerous for your eyes. The moral of the story: don’t hold on to old makeup, no matter how much you love it. How many of these things they use, far too many to mention here but let me say briefly. Thigs such as, MASCARA AND LIQUID EYELINER, liquid foundation, BLUSH, EYESHADOW AND OTHER FACE POWDERS, nail polishes, PENCIL EYELINER AND LIPLINER and many more. I am sure you all can understand that each and every one gives out some kind of smell. These have volatile chemicals dissolved in volatile chemicals that gives out from these substances.

Body smells

First of all, let’s be frank: sweat is not a sweet-smelling scent, um, ever. But there are certain areas of your body like your pubic hair and underarms – that naturally give off a stronger scent than your hair, chest, and back. So if you smell yourself in those “stronger” areas, don’t freak out right away – as long as things smell the way they normally do, you’re probably fine. That said, though, if you notice a strong, more foul, smell coming from those more subtle regions, pay attention. Scott Sullivan, MD, a professor of OBGYN at the Medical University at South Carolina, says a rancid scent could mean your body is struggling with digestion issues. “It’s rare, but it happens,” he says. It may just be a matter of changing up your diet and adding in more high-fibre foods, but your doctor can advise you on the best course of action.

Smelly socks

Smelly socks are socks that have acquired an unpleasant odour due to prolonged use. Their odour, which is complex and remains the object of study, is a mixture of ammonia, fatty acids (in particular, isovaleric acid), and lactic acid.

While odorous socks are repellent to most humans, they are a strong attractant for some animals, including dogs and mosquitos. They have proven useful in controlling the behaviour of these animals.

Although the odour of smelly socks is often associated with feet, it arises independently of contact with human feet in various foodstuffs such as dairy products, cheeses, sausages and fish sauce, and is naturally present in several plants. The smell has also been noted in building and automotive air treatment systems, where it is described as “jock socks odour” or “dirty socks syndrome”.

Just consider for a moment, all warm blooded male animals sniff the females to see if they smell nice enough to mate with. Humans are no exception other than that women smell nice and exciting all the time because women are receptive to men if they are treated with kindness and love and if they know the man and are either his partner or are attracted to him.
Dirty knickers smell of a woman

It is not a surprise that all body parts sweat that is why they wear socks and underwear both men and women. I saw somewhere it mentioned, some women sell their dirty knickers on the internet so there is a demand but most men will be reluctant to deal with unknown women who act in this way.

When I mentioned indoor air pollution, the pollution caused by cooking is a huge topic but however much the people know, they try and ignore those smells. How about the above mentioned smells? We need to aerate the houses to get rid of those smells otherwise the people breathe those smells even when they are sleeping. PRESS RELEASE AHMADIYYA  MUSLIM  JAMA’AT – SRI LANKA

Sinhala Translation with Arabic Text of the Holy Qur’an by Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at will be launched at Colombo National Education & Book Fair to be held at Public Library Premises, Colombo. It will be displayed as a main feature of the event. Stall No. 8 and 9.

This week-long book fair commences from July 28 will also have display of the copies of Holy Qura’an Translations by Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at in 73 languages of world over. The Sinhala Translation of the book Philosophy of Teachings of Islam is also one of the main displays in the event. This original book in Urdu was written by Ahmadiyya Founder Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad.

A Peace Message translated into Sinhala will also be for wider distribution at the event.

This year (2015) marks the centenary of the establishment of Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at – Sri Lanka.

The subject of Buddhist Monks and politics has been a bone of contention in this country since independence. Many a critique, both for and against, have been published among which Walpola Rahula’s  Bhiksuwakage Urumaya  is generally regarded as the most authentic and objective analysis on this subject.  This subject has again gained prominence with another noisy and fussy election around the corner.

The subject under discussion is extremely controversial. But the fact remains that they do get involved, some directly and others rather indirectly.  One has to enter this discussion objectively to understand the role of the Buddhist monk in Sri Lankan society san preconceived ideas, personal prejudices and ideologies based on wrong assumptions. Arguments advanced against monks getting involved in matters of statecraft in Sri Lanka and Buddhism practiced in this country, by people like Thambyiya (Buddhism Betrayed), Keperer, Steven Kemper and even my good friend H.L.Seneviratna as un-Buddhistic, therefore are not tenable in our national context. Their arguments are unreal and far from the truth. Though the Church plays the same role in the west, it’s rather ironical that none of the men like above criticize such traditions as unethical or irreligious.

From the birth of the Sri Lankan nation the King had been one with the religion and people. So much so active and direct interference of the monk in the affairs of the state had been accepted as a rule rather than an exception. Historically their influence on the affairs of the state has been far reaching and critical ever since Buddhism was formally introduced to this country in 307 BC during the time of King Devanampiyatissa. The King made Buddhism the State religion and he patronized the propagation and protection of the religion as well as the sustenance of the Mahasangha. The Community of Sangha on the other hand while attending to the spiritual and ritualistic aspects of the people also advised the King on the righteous rule of his Kingdom in accordance with the Ten Kingly Virtues of Righteous rule ( Dasaraja Dharma). The Monk played a key role not only in the selection and dethroning of the King but also advised the King on good governance for the good and welfare of the many.  So much so as the Mahawansa puts it in Sri Laka the ‘King was one with the people and the Religion’.  It was this age old tradition and the active role played my them in protecting the country that made the people to call the Mahasangha Jatiye muradevatavo. Thus both by tradition and practice the role of the Monk in our society acquired a unique role and Buddhism as a religion also came to be called Sinhala Buddhagama. This is not to deny that there were no people belonging to other ethnic groups like Tamil practicing Buddhism. This was a country specific characteristic evolved within the Sri Lankan social fabric. Within this social system the monk became supreme. Throughout history of this Island it was the monks who protected the king and the Kingdom.

Thus Theraputtabhaya, Wariyapolasumangala, Kadahapola set the role model of a Buddhist Monk in Sri Lankan society when it comes to matters of national interest. Their intervention when the nation was at crossroads or under threat was hailed by the people as heroic and patriotic. Had they been confine to hermitages  meditating in search of emancipation from sansara, I do not think their names would have entered history at all.

But today it has become a tragedy to note that most Monks have deviated from this traditional role and they have opted to join the main political parties. Not only they openly canvass for their parties but they also get on to the stage and now even go to Parliament enjoying all privileges of a laymen. The way they behave, the paid jobs they do and their life style have reduced them  to the level of laymen donning robes. Thereby they have brought disrepute to the Sasana, disunity to the Order and disaster to the Sinhala Buddhist culture. This attitude of monks is to be seen from top to bottom therefore I think this nonsense has to stop immediately if we want to save Sri Lanka. Even if legislation is not made banning monks seeking election to Parliament the respective Nikayas must ban monks from seeking such election and going after politicians seeking various favours. They must get back to their traditional role and protect the dignity of the robe; they must stand above all others; they must unite and rise in unison to protect the Country, the Nation and the Sasana. I would like to quote here Buddha’s  admonition to the Brethren as to how they should behave. I was alarmed when I saw the news that 36 Buddhist monks are contesting election this time. This I see as the beginning of the end of the Sinhala Buddhist nation.

Yatha sankara danasmin –Ujjutasming mahapate

Paduman tatta jayeta- suchi gandan manoraman

Eva sankara bhutesu- andhabute putujjane

Atirochati pannaya-samma sambuddha savako

(Just as a lotus sprung from the dirt on the highway spreads the sweet smell even so the sambuddha savaka stands above the ordinary people)

So in this context first of all the monks must clearly understand their real role in our society. The Mahanayaka Theras of the tun nikayas should get together and prepare a joint Kathikavatha laying down a strict code of ethics for the Sangha and expel those who violate it to restore discipline within the Order. If no action is taken immediately to do so, the place and respect for Sangha in our society will vanish very soon and the foundation of our society will disappear leading to a complete collapse of the nation.

Thereafter Sangha should rise in hundreds and thousands of Theraputtabhayas, Wariyapola Sumangalas, Kadahapolas, Megettuwatte Gunanandas and Soma Theras in keeping with and adhering to the tradition without getting indulged in mundane and dirty politics, the way it is being done now.  But at the same time we pray and appeal to Mahasangha in every village and every temple to come forward and awaken the whole nation for the final battle to save our Country, save our Nation and save our Religion! as one united mighty force to rescue the country, nation and the Sasana from anti Sinhala and anti Buddhist forces both at home and abroad rallying together. 

If you fail to act now, times will never come again for you to do your noble conventional duty by your Rata, Deya and samaya, the most sacred and noblest mission every Sri Lankan on earth, where ever he lives, is obliged and committed to do. If you fail to do this sacred duty, I strongly warn you to remember, posterity, will never forgive you for your sins.

Kalo ayan te Bhante!  Arabhata, Nikkhamata! Yunjayata Buddha sasana, Rakkhatha matu Bhumi! This is the time for you Ven, Sirs to begin, go forth and engage in protecting the Sasana and the Motherland!

A simple win is not enough. What the country needs is a massive win for Mahinda Rajapakse. Sinhala Buddhists  only can, do this, in the first place. It is they who can realize the clear and present danger to the unity and territorial integrity of Sri Lanka as well as for the security of the country in the immediate future and in the coming years.

For this reason all who are of voting age from youngsters to the elderly should make it a point to go to the polling stations and vote for Mahinda Rajapakse on 17 Aug.  This way  the voting percentage must increase from what it was on 8 Jan to much higher figure nearing one hundred percent if need be. It is a must for all those who voted against Mahinda Rajapakse believing in all the mud slinging, to compulsorily go and correct their mistake on 17 August by voting for Mahinda Rajapakse. They would do a favour if at least some could come on Mahinda platforms and make their confessions. This will encourage  others to emulate them and at least go to the polling station and do their confession in silent by voting for Mahinda Rajapakse.  Those who did not vote on 8 Jan and will not vote on 17 Aug will have to repent for the rest of their lives for not doing their duty by their motherland.

In the second place the minorities should realise that they will be able live and prosper in the island of Sri Lanka from Point Pedro in the North to the Dondra heads in the South only by coexisting with the Sinhalese. Sinhalese have not practiced the kind of Apartheid that is practiced in the North and in smaller enclaves dotted around the country where Sharia law is practiced. . Sinhalese have not declared a Bhoomi Putra doctrine to deprive rights to minorities. Therefore it is in their best interest to come and vote for a strong Sinhala Buddhist led stable government led by Mahinda Rajapakse than to a Christian led Western friendly government led by serial looser and mega fraudster – Ranil Wickramasinghe. This aspect was clearly stated by a far sighted Muslim gentlemen at the Mahinda Rajapakse rally held at Kurunegala.  I believe he has lived and prospered among the Sinhala Buddhists and understand the live and let live doctrine so profoundly enunciated by Lord Buddha.

A stable government will see that Sri Lanka prosper in the years ahead. There is much to be shared in the commonwealth of Sri Lanka. It is a win-win situation for all Sinhala, Tamils and Muslims, rather than for a few that favor enclaves feeding on the unsuspecting majority nation of the country. Those who favor division, dismemberment and balkanization of Sri Lanka will see that they will be the ultimate losers while taking Sri Lanka in the same direction that the country had been up to 2005 and later after 8 Jan 2015.  While all other countries in the South East Asia prospered, Sri Lanka was left in the doldrums mainly because of sabotage by the minorities who were intent of the division of the country for their selfish racist and religious interests. These manifestations are easily seen in the actions of Rishad Badiuddeen and Rauf Hakeem who are hell bent on carving out Jihadist enclaves in different parts of Sri Lanka.  On the other hand the Racist Tamils parties are intent on having their own patch of land as an ethnically cleansed area whilst retaining the right to live, work and prosper in the rest of the country.

No country can prosper when the majority is left as bystanders.  This was the lot of the Sinhala Buddhists since Independence from the British and even before going back to latter 19^th Century.  No country can prosper if the minorities become parasites feeding on the political and cultural space of the majority.

Mahinda Rajapakse has laid the foundation by initiating to lay the necessary infrastructure for the nation and he will continue to do so in the future.  He valiant attempts to open up the country with major roads, utility projects, country wide electrification are seen with jaundiced eyes by the separatists and jihadists. This can happen only if he is given a clear victory at the coming parliamentary elections on 17 August. This will enable him  run a trouble free administration. There is much to be done in the future.

In Sri Lanka there are no private enterprises capable of funding and carrying out mega infrastructure projects. This is the reason in Sri Lanka and in many other similar countries, this type of work that has long payback periods are only handled by Governments.  The electrical energy needs are almost complete and country electrification is nearing completion.

So far the UNP and former SLFP governments were only intent on feeding bellies and thus vote grabbing. It is commonly known that it is far better to teach someone to fish rather than give fish to consume. Once the necessary infrastructure has been laid it is up to the nation to pitch in and do the needful to make the country prosperous. Waiting for the government to spoon-feed should stop and people must become responsible citizens by themselves.

The hijacked government that was formed after 8 Jan had enough opportunities even as a ruse and to hoodwink the electorate, carry out a blameless and exemplary interim government. To begin with they failed by appointing a major Christian Administration. The likes of Christian Ranil, Catholic John Amaratunge as the Ministry of the Interior, Catholic Ravi Karunanayagm as the Finance Minister, Born Again Rosie Senanayake as the Minister in Charge of Children Affairs – (Jesu Pihitai Ape podi ewunta!) Evangelist Eran Wickramaratne showed how representative the new administration is? With this lot the Sinhala Buddhist nation is similar to a chicken coop protected by skulk of foxes.

They failed by being involved in the biggest financial fraud Sri Lanka has seen since Independence.  Their blatant attempts to hide the truth have convinced the intelligent electors of the guilt of Ranil Wickramasinghe in aiding and abetting of this fraud. They failed by stopping all the development activity and initiating kangaroo courts looking for ‘frauds’ , but could only find petite frauds or none at all. They failed by not allowing mega projects such as Major Road works, Port City project etc to go ahead while investigations for alleged malpractice are carried out. They failed by denying the financial viability of all minor contractors and subcontractors  and all those who depended on them for a living. They failed reduce the cost of living as promised ; most election promises remain unfulfilled and the intelligent electorate is now convinced that they are only ‘election promises’ – similar to rice from the moon.

Mahinda Rajapakse has learnt the lessons of 8 Jan and is now poised to run an effective administration with the able assistance of his brother – Gotabhaya Rajapakse. We hope and pray that the war hero Gotabhaya will once again come to lead the Defence Establishment and provide the necessary security for the nation that is a sine quoi non for future prosperity of our island nation.

I repeat:

ධර්මිෂ්ඨලාගේ ජේ ආර්ට පසුව අපට ලිච්ඡවිලාගේ රනිල් පහළ වී ඇත. පහළ වී ඇතැයි කිව ද ඔහු ද අනෙක් මිනිසුන් මෙන් ම උත්පත්තිය ලත් තැනැත්තෙකි. ජේ ආර්ට උපදෙස් දුන්නේ කවුදැයි නො දනිමි. රනිල්ට රතන හිමියන් උපදෙස් දුන්නත් ඔහු එ භාරගනී යැයි සිතිය නො හැකි ය. ලිච්ඡවිලාගේ රනිල්ට උපදෙස් දෙන්නේ ලිච්ඡවිලාගේ උදවියවත් කෞටිල්‍යලාගේ උදවියවත් නොව ඔබාමාලාගේ හා කැමරන්ලාගේ උදවිය ය. කෞටිල්‍යලාගේ උදවිය රතන හිමියන්ට නම්,උපදෙස් දෙනවා විය හැකි ය. ඒ උපදෙස් ද කැමරන්ලාගේ උපදෙස් අතර එතරම් වෙනසක් ඇතැයි නො සිතමි. ඒ සියල්ලන්ට අවශ්‍ය මැදමුළණ මහින්ද අතුගා දැමීමට ය, වළලා දැමීමට ය. 

බටහිරයන් දන්නා දෙයක් වේ. ඒ යම් සංස්කෘතියකට පහර ගැසීමට ඒ සංස්කෘතියෙහි ම සංකල්ප ආචාර ධර්ම ආදිය යොදා ගත යුතු බව ය. විශේ’ෂයෙන් ම එංගලන්තයේ සුද්දෝ ඒ බව දනිති. අවුරුදු දෙසියයකට පෙර ද කේම්බ්‍රිජ් උපධිධාරී ජෝන් ඩොයිලි ඒ බව දැන සිටියේ ය. අද ඔවුහු එදාටත් වඩා හොඳින් ඒ බව දනිති. ජේ ආර් ධර්මිෂ්ඨ සමාජයක් ඇති කරන බව සඳහන් කෙළේ මෙරට දශරාජ ධර්මයෙන් කරවීමට නො වේ. ඔහු ජනතාවගේ සංස්කෘතිය ගසා කා ජනතාව තමා දෙසට ආකර්ෂණය කර ගැනීමට එ සංකල්පය යොදා ගත්තේ ය. ධර්මිෂ්ඨ සමාජයක් බිහි කිරීමට යැයි කියමින් බලයට පැමිණි ජේ ආර් පරම පවිටු අධර්මිෂ්ට ඇමරිකන් ගැති ආණ්ඩුවක් පිහිටුවී ය. 

සිංහල බෞද්ධයෝ ලිච්ඡවින් ගැන දනිති. ලිච්ඡවි රාජ්‍යය රාජාණ්ඩුවක්වත් සමූහාණ්ඩුවක්වත් නො වී ය. ඇතැමුන් ඒ සමූහාණ්ඩුවක් ලෙස හඳුන්වන්නේ වෙනත් වචනයක් නැති කමට විය හැකි ය. ඒ ශාක්‍යයන්ගේ රාජ්‍යවලට වඩා ලිහිල් විය. ලිච්ඡවීහු නිතර රැස්වූහ. සාකච්ඡා කළහ. විසිර ගියහ. ඔවුන් බහුතර ඡන්දයෙන්වත් ඒකච්ඡන්දයෙන්වත් තීරණවලට පැමිණි බවක් නො කියැවෙයි. ඔවුහු සම්මුතියෙන් තීරණවලට පැමිණියහ. බුදුසසුනෙහි සංඝයා වහන්සේ ද සම්මුතියෙන් තීරණවලට පැමිණියහ. 

ලිච්ඡවින්ට සුළු කලක් වුවත් එලෙස සාකච්ඡාවෙන් සම්මුතියෙන් තීරණවලට පැමිණීමට හැකි වුයේ ඇයි? ඔවුන්ට පොදු රාෂ්ට්‍ර ප්‍රතිපත්ති විය. එසේත් නැත්නම් පොදු රාජ්‍ය ප්‍රතිපත්ති විය. ඔවුන් අතර වෙනස්කම් ඇතිවූයේ ඒ පොදු ප්‍රතිපත්තිවලට පටහැණීව යෑමෙන් නො වේ. 

අද මෙරට තත්ත්වය කුමක් ද? මෙරට දේශපාලන පක්‍ෂ අතර පොදු ප්‍රතිපත්ති නැත. ඊනියා ජාතික ප්‍රතිපත්ති ගැන කෙතෙක් කතා කළ ද අපට කිසිම දෙයක් ගැන පොදු රාජ්‍ය ප්‍රතිපත්ති නැත. අද සමහර පක්‍ෂවලට නම් ලංඩනයෙන් නියම කෙරෙන ඊනියා පොදුරාජ්‍ය මණ්ඩල ප්‍රතිපත්ති ඇත. මහින්ද රාජපක්‍ෂ අතුගා දැමීමට කතා කරන්නේ ඔහු මේ යටත්විජිතවාදී පොදු රාජ්‍ය මණ්ඩල ප්‍රතිපත්ති නො පිළිගන්නා බැවිනි. 

ලිච්ඡවිලාගේ රනිල්ට අවශ්‍ය වන්නේ දශරාජ ධර්මය ස්ථාපිත කිරීමට නො වේ. ඔහුට අවශ්‍ය ලංඩනයේ පොදු රාජ්‍ය මණ්ඩල ලොක්කන් සකස්කරන ප්‍රතිපත්ති දියවන්නාවේ දී බොරු සාකඡඡාවකට භාජනය කර ක්‍රියාත්මක කිරීම ය. ඉතා පැහැදිලිව ම සංධීය රාජ්‍යයක් පිහිටුවීම, මුස්ලිම් ඒකක බිහිකිරීම උතුරු හා නැගෙනහිර පළාත් එකතු කිරීම ආදිය එහි අඩංගු වෙයි. 

ප්‍රශ්නය වන්නේ ඒවාට එකඟ නොවන පක්‍ෂ පිලිබඳ ව ය. ලිච්ඡවින්ගේ නාමයෙන් රට පාවාදීමට ඔවුන් සූදානම් නැත. රනිල් ඔවුන්ට කුමක් කරන්නේ ද? ඔහු පැහැදිලිව ම ලන්ඩන් ලිච්ඡවිලා හා දිල්ලි ලිච්ඡවිලා සමග එකතු වී ඒ පක්‍ෂ මර්දනය කරනු ඇත. අප කළ යුත්තේ නූතන ව්‍යාජ ලිච්ඡවින් අගොස්තු 17 වැනි දා දියවන්නාවේ ගිල්ලවීම ය

Under instructions of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, a collective of lawyers had sent Letters of Demand to five persons including Minister Mangala Samaraweera, Deputy Minister Ranjan Ramanayaka and JVP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayaka for allegedly making defamatory comments about Mr. Rajapaksa.

Speaking at a press briefing held at Opposition Leader’s Office today, the lawyers said Singer Sunil Perera and former UNP MP Nalin Bandara had also been sent Letters of Demand.

According to Mr. Rajapaksa’s lawyers, Rupees one billion had been demanded from Deputy Minister Ramanayaka, JVP Leader Dissanayaka, Singer Sunil Perera and former UNP MP Nalin Bandara each, while Rs.500 million had been demanded from Minister Samaraweera.

Unless the demanded compensations were paid within 14 days from the day the letters received, former President’s lawyers said maximum legal action would be taken against them at court.

Lawyer Sagara Kariyawasam said the five persons had purposely engaged in an exercise to damage former President’s reputation by spreading false and baseless allegations via several TV political discussions and certain persons who conduct the programmes also tried to spread false allegations.

Our reliable sources have found that certain foreign countries including the United States of America are aiding those politicians to insult the savior of the country, Mahinda Rajapaksa. They are making hate speeches not to just a politician but to a great leader,” Mr. Karaiyawasam said.

The collective consisting 20 lawyers and Senior Presidential Counsels including Jayantha Weerasinghe and W.D. Dayarathne had been formed to take legal action against persons who make baseless statements criticising former President.

The collective is scrutinizing all public statement made regarding Mr. Rajapaksa,” Kariyawasam said.

Now, they will have to answer before the law instead of spreading false allegations,” he said.

Chandrapala Hitihamillage

In my previous article I highlighted the nature of the conspiracy. Post January 8 election results appear to have confirmed the observations made thereon without any doubt. As expected, Maithreepala Sirisena became the president by a slender majority with minority Tamil, Moslem and non-Buddhist votes. When Mahinda Rajapaksa retired to his Madamulana residence after his defeat, he gave up his presidency of SLFP as well to Maithreepala Sirisena.

At the outset, the President had to fulfill his obligations to his conspirators. Ignoring the Prime Minister who is already at the parliament with a majority vote, he appointed Ranil Widkremasinghe as the Prime Minister who did not command a majority vote. One of it’s kind in the entire political history of Sri Lanka. For this purpose he used his position as the president of the SLFP and persuaded some of the Ministers and MPs of the SLFP to join for a national government for hundred days under Ranil Wickremasingle as the prime minister. Most of the important ministries were given to the MPs of the UNP.

In spite of his repeated defeats, Western powers were able to keep him as the head of the UNP as he was their most trusted and effective representative. Immediately after assuming duties as the prime minster he announced his budgetary proposals to hood wink the public. These proposals included reduced fuel prices, higher guaranteed prices for some products including paddy and some financial benefits to government employees without considering in the least about their implications on government expenditure. In consequence they were forced to borrow an unprecedented amount from the domestic market by a treasury bond issue in a controversial manner. Now this bond issue is accused as a downright fraud. He also took measures to stop the activities of the Colombo Port City Project funded by the Chinese  overnment and Uma Oya project funded by Iran under the guise of environmental problems He used some of his stooges for this purpose who gave wide publicity to certain make shift environmental issues to mislead the public.

Some of the other projects in progress were also stopped. He unleashed his revenge on his political opponents by accusing Rajapaksa family and others on false charges of corruption and by dragging them on to the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) appointed particularly for this purpose. Sometimes they were led to other legal authorities such as the Criminal Investigation Department, Bribery Commission etc. Chief Justice was replaced even without allowing the existing CJ to resign.

A former CJ Shirani Bandaranayske who was found guilty on some charges was exonerated and reinstated with full honours and made her retire on the following day with full benefits of retirement. The President was given a Royal Welcome for what he did, by summoning his to the Buckingham Palace on the advise of the British prime minister. American Secretary of State John Kerry himself came to thank him personally after a long lapse. India arranged an immediate welcome ceremony. Several measures were taken to relax security arrangements in northern and eastern areas and by giving back some land held by the armed forces for security reasons to appease Tamils and Moslems..

With the help of Chandrika Bandaranayaka Kumaratunga, the President started to break the SLFP by appointing anti-Mahianda Rajapaksa MPs like Arujuna Ranatunga as organizers of Strong SLFP constituents like Attanagalla. But when Chandrika Kumaratunga started campaigning for them with an eye on becoming the president of the SLFP again she was booed out of the meetings by the people.

By this time people were beginning to realize that they were cheated and that all the accusations made against the Rajapaksa family and others were false as none of them were proved beyond any reasonable doubt. The conscience of people made them feel that they had been very unreasonable to the former president who had done so much to the country.

Hence, they started flocking in large numbers to pay courtesy calls on him. Other party leaders of the alliance Wimal Weerawansa, Udaya Gammanpila, Vasudeva Nanayakkara, Dinesh Gunawardena and some members of the SLFP Bandula Goonewardena, Prasanna Ranatunga, Kumara Welgama, Professor G.L.Pieris and several others startedcampaigning against the conspiracy and the dual role played by Maithreepala Sirisena in trying to destroy the party. They wanted Mahinda Rajapaksa back as their leader to contest the election for the post of Prime Minister.

When this was denied by Maithreepala Sirisena as the president of SLFP all the other MPs rallied against him except a few and he had no option but to oblige. The culmination of these events forced him to make a statement to the nation. This statement let the cat out of the bag and exposed his leading role in the conspiracy.

Flaunting of a counterfeit ‘ National flag’ during hysterical remonstrations organised by a ‘handful of frontline organisers of the  ‘ bring back Mahinda brigade’ prior to the nominations day managed to disturb the national hornet’s nest and triggered more damage to their own self image, merely by the denuding their hypocrisy.

However, later realising their folly and then coming back with open public apologies was akin to ‘murdering a person and then saying ‘sorry’ afterwards’ some critics put it at the time, for, the damage had already been done irreparably after attempting to brainwash and poison the mindset of the masses to fulfill their ulterior motives. By their own act they managed to a greater extent conveniently manage to convince the country’s intelligent people that they are nothing but a ‘hard up’ and ‘two- faced’ selfish group of charlatans who were ready to bring about racial cacophony for their personal political gain!

The National Flag

When Vijaya, the first King of Sri Lanka, arrived in Ceylon from India in 486 BC, he brought a flag with a symbol of a Lion on it. Since then, the Lion symbol has played a significant role in the history of Ceylon/ Sri Lanka.  The North Indian Prince who followed King Vijaya too used the flag extensively and finally it became a symbol of freedom and hope.

When King Dutugemunu confronted and defeated the South Indian invader Elara, the banner he carried portrayed a Lion carrying a sword on his right fore-paw along with two other symbols, the Sun and the Moon.

The flag was in use until 1815, until the supremacy of the Kandyan Kingdom of Sri Wickrama Rajasinha was evicted on 2 March by the Kandy Convention and proclaimed King George III as King of Ceylon thus replacing the Lion flag with the Union Jack as the national flag of Ceylon. The Lion Flag was taken to England and kept at the Royal Hospital, Chelsea.

In 1807 it is recorded that the sword was an indicator of Official Rank so that the more senior persons in what could be described as a colonial civil service would wear a more lavishly adorned weapon etc., and that was also the intent though perhaps to a lesser degree in the Portuguese and Dutch periods’.

The late E. W. Perera and the late D. R. Wijewardene, (Pioneer of Lake House Newspaper Group Ceylon Ltd), who played a major role in the Independence movement of Ceylon, in the 1940s, discovered the original Lion flag in Chelsea. The Lion flag then became the cynosure of all eyes since the fall of the Kandyan Kingdom.

On Friday January 16, 1948 when the question of the National flag became an issue among the political leaders of the day Mudliar, A. Sinnalebbe (Batticaloa) rose in Parliament and moved, “That this house is of opinion that the Royal Standards of King Sri Wickrama Raja Sinha depicting a yellow Lion passant holding a sword in its right paw on a red background, which was removed to England after the Convention of 1815, should once again be adopted as the official flag of free Lanka”.

Heritage

 The National Flag of this country has been designed with great care and purpose to represent Sri Lanka’s heritage. It consists of a Lion holding a Kastane sword in its right fore-paw; red background in front with four golden Bo leaves in every corner, two vertical coloured strips of equal size to its left, in orange and green. The yellow represents the majority of Buddhists, orange signifies Hindus and green indicates Muslims. Golden lion epitomises the Sinhala civilization and Kastane sword stands for the authority and bravery of the nation.

The four Bo leaves signify Buddhism and stands for the four virtues – Metta (loving kindness), Karuna (compassion), Upekksha  (equanimity) and Mudita (happiness); the eight hairs in the Lion’s tail suggests the noble eightfold path of Buddhism; handle of the sword characterises four elements of nature, earth, air, fire and water; the nose of the Lion exemplifies the intelligence and its beard signifies the purity of word.

Contemporary Flag

When Ceylon gained her independence from the British on 4^th of February 1948, the Lion flag was hoisted once again. The first Prime Minister Rt. Hon. D. S. Senanayake appointed a committee seeking advice on the design of the flag, and the Committee in return approved the retention of the symbol of Lion with the sword and the Bo leaves with two vertical green and orange colour stripes. The modern national flag with the significance of each symbol was hoisted for the first time on 3 March 1950.

It is very important to note that the Constitution of Sri Lanka carries a picture of the National flag with an explanation under Article 6, and in the 2nd Appendix indicates how the National flag should appear. Article 83 of the Constitution also instructs on the process to follow in the event of a change in the design if and when such a change is contemplated.

In such circumstances any distortion to the National Flag becomes a violation of the Constitution of the Democratic Republic of Sri Lanka and the Penal Code and it is highly illegal for anyone to either disrespect or disregard this national property according to any one’s whims and fancies. If at all, any changes have to be done through a motion in the Sri Lanka Parliament by its members approved only by a two-thirds majority and a referendum.

Distortion  & Demonstration.

 Displaying multiples of distorted National flags by the  ‘bring back Mahinda brigade’ with thousands of their supporters, were done recently at various public protest rallies held at Nugegoda, Kandy, Ratnapura, in front of the Dalada Maligawa, Kandy, at the Bribery Commission and at a protest held on the Parliament road etc., as a means of objecting to a government directive to summon the former president Mahinda Rajapaksa to the Briery Commission. During such rallies the green and orange colour stripes that represent minorities in the country had been conveniently omitted in the distorted flags distributed to the protesters which, the critics say, tantamount to creating disunity among different communities!

This goes to show the imprudence on the part of a few rash thinking politicians creating an unwarranted major legal issue where the Police had to on complaints received by them, direct the matter to a special police team to investigate, aiming at uncovering those responsible to institute legal action and subjecting them to maximum punishment under the penal code.

Colombo Chief Magistrate had already ordered CID to produce the suspects to courts before 13 July, in the case of ‘Distortion of National Flag’ while the former President Mahinda Rajapaksa was quoted as stating that ‘the distribution of altered national flags to participants of two anti-government demonstrations could be a conspiracy’!

Whatever the final outcome is going to be at the final decision taken by the Law Courts at the end of the trial (if it materialises at all, in the present environment of political storms in the country) it goes to show the immaturity and selfishness and the greed for power of some of the contemporary Sri Lankan politicians who have the guts to appear before people and say they are totally committed to the welfare of the people they represent and the whole nation.

It’s a shame that the Sri Lankan politics today have stooped to such low and cheap gimmicks in order to confuse the masses and to grab power by hook or by crook!  The time has come for the intelligent constituent to decide the type of representatives they nominate to represent them, either to the local government or as parliamentarians in the future.

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa can seek forgiveness from the public for not taking actions against the wrongdoers who have partially destroyed what Mahinda Rajapaksa has achieved and what any other leaders could not dream about. Some UFPA voters have been washed away by the media. Seeking forgiveness is not a bad thing. Former Indian Prime Minister Indra Ghandi had done it village to village once.

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa has been badly painted among Tamils even though their inner heart beats every second with gratitude for him. Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa can declare that he would appoint a popular Tamil as a deputy Prime Minister.

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa needs to create a situation in which opposition voters can turn their head to listen to him. The motherland is at the crossroad. Hope that righteousness will prevail.

The 35-year-old three wheeler driver, Hewa Narandeniyage Chaminda of Makandura Kalahagama, who was involved in the controversial Akuressa incident of grasping the hands of former President and Kurunegala UPFA candidate Mahinda Rajapaksa said he held his hand in admiration when he was moving towards the stage among the crowd but he couldn’t get his hand back due to the pressure exerted by the crowd gathered around him.

Describing the incident to the media at the Matara UPFA main office he said,”I have been an SLFP supporter for the past 18 years. From my first vote I voted for the SLFP at every election. Even after his defeat I went to Medamulana and Carlton house to see him. I have on several occasions greeted him by holding his hands”

“I had consumed some beer when I went to the Akuressa meeting. Mahinda Rajapaksa was proceeding to the meeting passing the spot where we were waiting. As usual I felt the urge to touch and hold his hand through the crowd. However, with a sudden surge of the people from behind it became much difficult for me to get my hand back which was squeezed among the crowd at the time. The rumours that I was trying to remove his gold rings were baseless. He didn’t attempt to assault me. I regret this happening as I had a high regard for the savior of the country,” he said.

Akuressa SLFP organizer Manoj Sirisena who arranged the media discussion said the UNP was exploiting the incident for political advantages trying to tarnish the image of the former president. I met Ayurwedic Specialist Physician Dr. S.S.Gunawardena at his Osu Uyana” at Anuradhapura.  The ten acre block of land is Dr.
