The Terrorist Investigation Division has commenced an investigation into Rs. 980 million in an account maintained by an extremist group at a bank in Trincomalee.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that several drug dealers in Sri Lanka too have made financial contributions to the extremist outfit.

This was revealed when a resident of Kehelwatta, Panadura, arrested in connection with drug dealing, said that he had donated money to an Islamic extremist organization, Police spokesman, DIG Ajith Rohana said yesterday. The suspect was arrested by the Peliyagoda Crimes Branch and during questioning he revealed that a part of his earnings went to the extremist group.

The bank account was opened in 2013. The suspect was handed over to the TID yesterday for further investigations.

New laws will be introduced to stop the felling of coconut trees without permission in the future, Plantation Industries and Export Agriculture Minister Ramesh Pathirana said.

While addressing a coordinating meeting at Gampaha District recently, the Minister pointed out that there is a huge demand for local coconut harvest in the international market and therefore, the coconut cultivation in the country should be increased.

“It is essential to increase coconut cultivation in the country. We need to restrict the allotment of coconut cultivation lands and we will be doing it in a very systematic manner,” he said.

“At present, permission is required for coconut land allotment in parts for more than 10 acres, but the Ministry is hoping to reduce it to 1 hectare in the future,” the Minister added. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

Former Governor of Western Province Azath Salley has been arrested this evening (March 16) by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

The arrest was made on the advice of the Attorney General, his coordinating officer State Counsel Nishara Jayaratne said.

Police Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana noted that Salley will be detained and interrogated under the provisions of the Prevention of Terrorism (PTA).

Convening a media briefing recently, Leader of the National Unity Front (NUF) Azath Salley made controversial statements with regard to the law of the country.

His disputed remarks came as a response to the plans by Justice Minister Ali Sabry to revise Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act by November.

Salley had stated that he will only respect the Quran, the Hadiths and Shariah but not the laws of the government.

This later triggered several complaints to the CID. Accordingly, a team of CID officers led by an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) was appointed to inquire into Salley’s statements.

The Attorney General instructed the CID to arrest the former governor as sufficient evidence has revealed that he had committed an offence under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) and violated the International Covenant on Civil and Political. Rights (ICCPR) Act, No. 56 of 2007.

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd. will work with Sri Lanka’s John Keells Holdings Plc to develop a port terminal in the island nation, Indian billionaire Gautam Adani’s first such standalone overseas project.

India’s biggest private port operator got a letter of intent from Sri Lankan authorities to build and operate the West Container Terminal of Colombo Port for 35 years, Adani Ports said in an exchange filing Monday. The project cost is estimated to be around $750 million, according to Daya Ratnayake, chairman of Sri Lanka Ports Authority.

This marks the latest addition in the expanding portfolio of the Indian firm that already operates a dozen ports in India, commands 30% market share locally and recently secured an investment from Warburg Pincus LLC. Its tie-up with John Keells — Sri Lanka’s largest listed conglomerate — also bolsters India’s engagement with its neighboring nation that has in recent years relied heavily on China for building its infrastructure.

Shares of Adani Ports rose as much as 2.3% in Mumbai on Tuesday, pushing this year’s climb to almost 50%. John Keells’s shares advanced as much as 1.4% in Colombo.

The overseas project is part of tycoon Adani’s rapidly diversifying empire as he adds assets from ports to airports, coal mines and data centers, underscoring the rising heft of this first-generation entrepreneur.

The port terminal will have a quay length of 1,400 meters and depth of 20 meters, making it a prime trans-shipment cargo destination to handle ultra large container carriers, according to the filing from Adani Ports.

It will be the first ever Indian port operator in Sri Lanka and hold 51% in the joint venture.

Myanmar coup and Western impotence; Death of freedom and justice

March 15th, 2021

By Raj Gonsalkorale

The UN deputy human rights chief and the independent expert on Myanmar have called for targeted sanctions against the leaders of what they both described as the coup that took place in the country last week, as the Human Rights Council met in special session on Friday to discuss the ongoing crisis

While the US and its allies gang against Sri Lanka, which incidentally is run by a President, a Prime Minister and a cabinet of ministers, elected by the people, a Parliament elected by the people,  overwhelmingly one might add in all the elections, and a Parliamentary Opposition elected by the people, these countries led by the US, and the UN Security Council, are uttering meaningless words without backing their so called condemnation of the brazen Military Coup in Myanmar with something tangible than empty words. It clearly demonstrates their impotence and sense of priorities.

More than 80 people have been killed so far in riots against the Military and scores of people have been detained for taking a stand on democracy, freedom and liberty. The human rights champion, the UNHRC is yet to say anything about the deprivations imposed on a free people, and the human right taken away from them by the Military.

A freely elected political party, an election supervised by the Military no doubt, was ousted because the Military claimed the election was not fair and was rigged. If this were true, then it is the Military that failed because they controlled the conduct of the election. It is a reflection on them that they did not do their job.

The ardent and vociferous democratic citadels led by the US are all aware why the Military did what they did. It is because their own plan to rig the election in favour of the puppet political party they created to win enough seats to form the next government along with the 25% of the seats that are allocated to the Military anyway, failed and backfired on them. The puppets only needed another 25% of the seats, and the Military was banking on fraud and rigging to get them past that point.

Despite this fraud and rigging, the people of Myanmar saw through this and decided to increase the party position of the NLD led by Aung San Suu Kyi.

So, now the Military has coined together a Goebbellian version of their own, and promising the world they will have free and fair” elections within a year. If the world does not have the guts to call the military’s bluff now, would they ever have any power over the military to make sure there is a free and fair election”? One can bet all their wealth and take a safe punt on this. That is, the result of the free and fair election” will be the election of the military backed puppets, and them forming a government with the Military. That will be the outcome.

That will be the end of democracy and the short lived breath of fresh air Myanmar enjoyed for a brief period. Unfortunately for Myanmar and for Aung San Suu Kyi and her party, their treatment of the Rohingya’s will not help the cause of democracy in the country. The shabby and disgraceful treatment of human beings by human beings, all of whom did not have any identity at the time of their birth but acquired society’s labels, where, someone of the stature of Aung San Suu Kyi did not offer any sympathy or concern or empathy for a group of people so horribly being treated, sadly removed the glowing lustre that Aung San Suu Kyi had till then.

It is well known that it is the Military that forced her hand to comply with what they were doing to the Rohingya’s, and her own safety, and the security of her government may have been compromised had she said anything in empathy of the Rohingya’s.

Who are the Rohingya People?

In a well-researched commentary in the Wikipedia, it says the Rohingya people are a stateless Indo-Aryan ethnic group who predominantly follow Islam and reside in Rakhine StateMyanmar.  Before the displacement crisis in 2017, when over 740,000 fled to Bangladesh, an estimated 1.4 million Rohingya lived in Myanmar. Described by journalists and news outlets as one of the most persecuted minorities in the world, the Rohingya population is denied citizenship under the 1982 Myanmar nationality law. They are also restricted from freedom of movement, state education and civil service jobs. The legal conditions faced by the Rohingya in Myanmar have been compared to apartheid by some academics, analysts and political figures, including Nobel laureate Bishop Desmond Tutu. The most recent mass displacement of Rohingya in 2017 led the International Criminal Court investigating crimes against humanity, and led to the International Court of Justice investigating genocide.

The Rohingya maintain they are indigenous to western Myanmar with a heritage of over a millennium and influence from the ArabsMughals and Portuguese. The community claims it is descended from people in precolonial Arakan and colonial Arakan; historically, the region was an independent kingdom between Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent

The Myanmar government considers the Rohingya as colonial and postcolonial migrants from neighbouring Chittagong/East Bengal respectively Bangladesh. It argues that a distinct precolonial Muslim population is recognized as Kaman, and that the Rohingya conflate their history with the history of Arakan Muslims in general to advance a separatist agenda. In addition, Myanmar’s government does not recognise the term “Rohingya” and prefers to refer to the community as “Bangali“. This account in the Wikipedia outlines the sad state that history and interpretations of it have placed some half a million Rohingya people in abject poverty, stateless, and dehumanised by the Military in Myanmar.

What is the future of Myanmar?

The Buddhist establishment and a vast majority of Buddhists in Myanmar, have practiced anything but Buddhism in the way they treated the Rohingya people. There was no Metta, Karuna, Muditha nor Upeksha extended to the Rohingya people, and sadly Aung San Suu Kyi did not either.

Now, unfortunately, she is no longer on the high pedestal she was in when she became the defacto leader of Myanmar in 2016. She cannot rally the world to come to the defence of democracy and freedom in her country as she would have been able to if not for the Rohingya crisis.

However, it is not Aung San Suu Kyi who is an issue here. It is what she represented, the future of Myanmar, its democracy and its freedom. It is bigger than her and it is bigger than the unfortunate blotch on her arising from the Rohingya people crisis. If for a moment, one gives some thought to who benefited most from that crisis, it is impossible to say Aung San Suu Kyi did. In fact, the reality is the opposite.

Who then did? If one extends this thought to the possibility that the entity that benefited most orchestrated the crisis to trap her and lesson her influence internationally, then that entity certainly achieved that.

If hypothetically, the Military was indeed that entity and they achieved the latter, the next step would have been to form the next government with their puppet party. But, knowing the popularity of Aung San Suu Kyi, they would have had to plan to win it in whatever way, including by rigging the election in their favour and not in a genuinely free and fair election.

What probably disrupted such a plan would have been their inability to have rigged the election sufficiently and the overwhelming vote of confidence that Aung San Suu Kyi got from the people who not only voted for her and her party, but also safeguarded the voting process.

The option planned by the Military, not their preferred option, as that would have been to form a government with their puppet party, would have been to stage a Coup on the pretext of the election not being free and fair” and that they would conduct such an election. That is what has happened and the jig saw is complete now. It’s no longer a puzzle.

Of course they have to eliminate Aung San Suu Kyi from the electoral process as a diminished standing internationally, has had a reverse effect in Myanmar with her popularity going up even further. Trumped up charges against her are unfolding before the world, and her personal safety is at serious risk. The Military is capable of doing anything to make sure their plan succeeds and they take formal, democratic” control after the planned free and fair” election.

Unfortunately, the Military might still prevail as there is no kudos to be gained for the US and its allies by restoring Aung San Suu Kyi’s weakened international position. The democratic citadels playing just lip service and showing feigned outrage at the Military and taking token positions rather than any decisive action to make the Military back down will not happen. They will not send any strong messages to China, urging them to get the Military to restore democracy without pre conditions. Instead, they will work towards the free and fair” election that the Military has promised, and they will then announce they will accept the people’s verdict at that free and fair” election in which the Military puppets will win the election by means anything but free and fair.

Democracy and freedom will be extinguished in Myanmar until the next Aung San Suu Kyi emerges at some distant date. The US, and its allies perhaps do not realise that their impotence would have delivered Myanmar lock, stock and barrel to China.

We categorically deplore and condemn Interference by the Indian Ambassador in Sri Lanka’s internal matters

March 15th, 2021

 Dr. Sudath Gunasekara Mahanuwara.

While we categorically deplore and condemn Interference by the Indian Ambassador in Sri Lanka’s internal matters we call upon the Government to take stern action against all ambassadors who behave in this manner and deport them as soon as possible (as Premadasa once did to British Ambassador) and discontinue diplomatic relations with all such enemy countries

Dear Patriots,

Please seriously look at the following news item.

Indian Envoy tours North, East to meet political heads & assess India-funded projects

11 March 2021 08:17 pm – 0     – 983

Indian High Commissioner Gopal Baglay has undertaken a four-day tour of the Northern and Eastern Provinces to interact with a cross section of society there including political leaders and inspect the projects  funded by India which are in various stages of implementation, sources said.

The High Commissioner also would visit the places of religious worship. This is his first such visit to the two provinces after he was appointed Indian High Commissioner in Sri Lanka.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi renewed his country’s call for the implementation of 13th Amendment in full. It was repeated by India even during the ongoing session of the UNHRC.

Moreover, the Jaffna cultural centre and the Palali airport development are the two key projects financed by India. (Kelum Bandara)”

After reading this news item it gives me the Impression that the North and East of this country have already ceased to be a part of Sri Lanka.

Otherwise why the Government keep silent on this type of undiplomatic, undemocratic and highhanded action by the Indian High Commissioner Gopal Baglay. Has he already ceased to be the High Com of India to Sri Lanka and openly assumed the role of the Indian viceroy reigning over the Indian suzerainty in that part of our country. Otherwise why should he makes a 4 day tour to meet Tamil political Heads in that part of the country and interact with the Tamil people there. What business he has to inspect development projects in that part of this country funded by India. We categorically deplore this  high handed undiplomatic interference with the internal affairs of this country by Indian High Commissioner. This in my opinion amounts to a violation of all accepted international diplomatic covenants as if he has completely forgotten that he is only another Ambassador representing his country in this country and neither he nor his country has any legitimate authority to behave and act in this manner. This is naked interference in another sovereign country’s self -respect and dignity. I think he is acting on the assumption that the defunct Rajive/JR Accor of July 29th 1987 has already accorded North and Eastern Provinces of Sri Lanka as the Traditional Tamil homeland. For his information, I must categorically state the Tamil Homeland is in South India although the Indian Government has denied it to them at Home in spite of the fact 70 million Tamils live there. They have not even recognized Tamil as a national language or an official Language in India. Not only Ambassador Gopal but also the entire Indian Government should be ashamed of this hypocrisy and duplicity.

It is common sense that India adopts the same attitude with regard to the Tamils in the plantation sector as well. It is high time that India should understand these Tamils living in Sri Lanka are no longer Indian citizens. True they may be of Indian Origin. But looking after them is our business as long as they accept this country as their country. Why are these Indian politicians and bureaucrats concerned so much about the welfare of Tamils in Sri Lanka, when millions are suffering at home even without a lavatory in their own country?

While deploring his unethical, undiplomatic and high handed action, the Government should I think, call upon this arrogant ambassador to explain for interfering with our domestic affairs this country. In the event he fails to do so he should be deported immediately for violating International diplomatic covenants and this should, I think, apply to all other Ambassadors as well who interfere with our internal matters and violate diplomatic norms and act against our interests. We want only friends and not enemies who stab from behind.

Isn’t it a big tragedy that some of these Diplomats are more concerned about minorities living in this country than the native Sinhalese to whom this country belong and who have shaped its civilization for two and half millennia, discriminating the natives as their enemies.

Looking at the way how our own politicians discriminate against the Sinhala majority by curry favouring the Muslims and Tamils, traitorously at the expense of their own nation, in a way it is not surprising that these foreign diplomats also behave in this manner.

Video evidence of ‘massacre’ by UK special forces in Afghanistan mysteriously VANISHES – report

Video allegedly showing a rogue” SAS unit committing war crimes in Afghanistan has supposedly disappeared, as an investigation into the squad’s alleged massacres” has been plagued by missing evidence and silence from witnesses.

Saifullah Yar was just 19 when his family were shot dead in an SAS raid on their Afghan village in 2011. When British military investigators flew to Kabul in 2017 to investigate the raid, he told them he was handcuffed and led away from his father, brother and two male cousins. He heard two sustained bursts of gunfire, and when the Brits departed, his relatives were dead, their bodies riddled with bullets.ALSO ON RT.COM‘Psychos’ fueled by ‘blood lust,’ Australian special forces tortured and executed prisoners in Afghanistan – report

Video footage of the raid was apparently captured by US air support overhead, but according to a new Sunday Times report, American authorities mysteriously lost the footage, and were unable to provide it to a British court, where Saifullah has brought a judicial review into the fatal raid.

The mysterious disappearance isn’t the first time that key evidence from the raid has gone missing, or been intentionally hidden. The Royal MIlitary Police (RMP) investigators’ 2017 visit to Kabul was one of their last tasks in a three-and-a-half year probe into allegations of war crimes against the SAS unit, during which they found that the British operators doctored mission reports to implicate Afghan special forces in similar killings, dozens of which took place between 2011 and 2013.

The investigators interviewed 42 soldiers who said they were unable to remember the mission. Court documents reported on by the Times stated that a judge termed this a case of collective amnesia.” The weapons used in the raid on Saifullah’s village were destroyed the same year the RMP opened its investigation.ALSO ON RT.COMBoris Johnson wants to make British Armed Forces untouchable by offering them immunity for war crimes

However, evidence against the SAS troops has piled up. Investigators found that British 5.56mm bullets, rather than the 7.62mm rounds used by the Afghan commandos, were used to kill the victims. Additionally, they examined reports that weapons were planted on the bodies of these victims, in order to justify the killings later.

The reports that followed the 2011 raid on Saifullah’s village stated that his family were killed when they reached for weapons as the SAS searched their property. These reports were met with skepticism by senior commanders, who in a chain of emails seen by the British court, described the raid as the latest massacre,” and expressed disbelief at the idea of four overpowered prisoners reaching for hidden grenades and rifles during the raid.

And finally they shot a guy who was hiding in a bush who had a grenade in his hands. You couldn’t MAKE IT UP!,” one senior noncommissioned officer wrote.ALSO ON RT.COMBritish soldiers ‘got away with murder’ in Iraq, as government sent unqualified officers to investigate war crimes – report

The British government closed down the investigation in late 2017 without prosecuting a single case. The same year, another wide-ranging investigation into alleged war crimes, the Iraq Historic Allegations Team (IHAT), was shut down, also without prosecuting a case.

With the SAS typically exempt from parliamentary oversight, the courts are now Saifullah’s best hope of finding justice. Our client is seeking a fresh investigation into the deaths of his loved ones and he wants to find out whether their deaths were part of a pattern of unlawful killings of Afghan civilians,” his lawyer, Tessa Gregory, told the Sunday Times.

Lankan President says Special Forces camps will be reopened in Eastern Province

March 15th, 2021

By P.K.Balachandran Courtesy NewsIn.Asia

Colombo, March 15 (newsin.asia): Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has said that security will be beefed up in the Eastern Province to stem separatist terrorism and Islamic extremism.

Tamils and Muslims together outnumber the Sinhalese in the Eastern Province. The province had been the base of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and also Jehadists who staged the April 21, 2019 suicide bombings in Colombo and other places.

Speaking at the 14 th. Discussion with the Village” program in Galagoda East in Galle District on March 13, the President said: There were about 50 camps in the Eastern Province. They had been removed and only a handful of camps remain. I have advised that these camps be opened again, because separatist terrorism or Islamic extremism will not be allowed under our government.”

As per the full text issued by the President’s Media Division, the President said: I’m well versed in national security and gravely concerned about it too. Under President Mahinda Rajapaksa I was entrusted with this responsibility as the Secretary of Defense. We worked as a team to end the 30-year war. I know how hard and how dedicated they were in executing it. So I will never allow this victory to be spoiled.”

He went on to say: Those who neglected national security as a government are now trying to pin the Sunday Easter attacks on the former President alone. The Report of the Commission has clearly shown that the previous government did not give due importance to national security. All those who were part of the former government are responsible for this heinous attack.”

His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith has made a statement claiming that some politicians are involved in the attack and they were not mentioned in the report. We will investigate them as well. Those politicians are not with us. They did not help bring me or the government into power. They are with the opposition. We don’t want to protect anyone. We are not up for negotiation. We have 2/3rd majority (in parliament).”

We came to power without any help from them. So we don’t need to protect them. If they have done anything wrong, they will be exposed.”

After we came to power, in addition to those who were arrested by the CID, the police, the Terrorism Investigation Division, we have arrested others that had ties with foreign countries and several others who were engaged in them were also apprehended. Investigations are being carried out and they will continue until all the culprits are caught by the law.”

The President pointed out that the report of the Presidential Commission on Easter Sunday attack repeatedly stated that the previous government did not pay any attention to national security and it was the reason for this attack.

True, we told the same thing back then. Not only did we win the war but we also placed required security measures to prevent a war from happening again, especially in the Northern and Eastern Provinces. However, during the previous government everything was neglected. Intelligence officers were imprisoned, and complaints were leveled against them. The security arrangements in those areas were completely dismantled. Even if a simple poster had been pasted, we would catch them. If you can remember, anyone who were even involved in minor incidents were apprehended. That is how we ensured national security. However, the Report clearly concludes that the previous government did not pay any attention to it and national security was ignored.”

On the steps his government has taken to ensure security, the President said: We have re-activated the program we carried out by deploying competent personnel to ensure national security. But when something like this collapses, it is difficult to rebuild. It will take some time. The existing intelligence services need to be re-launched. Officers need to be reinstated in those areas. The Special Forces, especially the police.”

  • APSEZ will partner with John Keells Holdings PLC, Sri Lanka’s largest diversified conglomerate, and with the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) as a part of the consortium awarded this mandate

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zones Ltd (APSEZ), a key subsidiary of the diversified Adani Group, has received a Letter of Intent (LOI) from Sri Lankan authorities for development and operations of

(WCT) in Colombo.MORE FROM THIS SECTION

APSEZ will partner with John Keells Holdings PLC, Sri Lanka’s largest diversified conglomerate, and with the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) as a part of the consortium awarded this mandate. The WCT will be developed on a Build, Operate and Transfer basis for a period of 35 years as a public-private partnership. WCT will have a quay length of 1400 meters and alongside depth of 20 meters, thereby making it a prime transhipment cargo destination to handle Ultra Large Container Carriers.

The project is expected to boost WCT’s container handling capacity and further consolidate Sri Lanka’s locational advantage as one of the world’s top strategic nodes along the busiest global transhipment route. The Colombo Port is already the most preferred regional hub for transhipment of Indian containers and mainline ship operators with 45% of Colombo’s transhipment volumes either originating from or destined to an Adani port terminal in India.

The network impact of this partnership is significant and expected to be mutually benefitted from the string of 7 container terminals across its 12 ports that Adani operates along the Indian coastline handling an annual volume of over 6 million TEUs.

This partnership will multiply and accelerate the transhipment options that will become available to serve various shipping lines and other potential port customers across the South Asian waters, benefiting both, India and Sri Lanka in multiple ways.

Karan Adani, CEO and Whole Time Director of APSEZ said, Any port partnership is a validation of the mutual trust between two nations and in this context the WCT partnership is significant on several fronts. It is a continuation of the deep and mutually beneficial strategic relationship between two neighbouring nations whose history is deeply intertwined, and I am grateful to the Leaders of the Government of India, Leaders of the Government of Sri Lanka and our Sri Lankan partners for the deep trust they have endowed on us.

The combination of the strategic location of the Port of Colombo as a launching point for transshipment across the entire subcontinent, the deep domestic strength of SLPA and John Keells Holdings PLC, and the Adani Group’s unmatched network of container terminals across the Indian coastline opens up several dimensions of growth possibilities for years to come, not just within our two countries but also to the east as well as the west of our two nations”.TRENDING STORIESSee All

Krishan Balendra, Chairman of JKH, said We are excited about this opportunity to invest in the much-needed capacity expansion of the Colombo Port and to partner the Adani Group, the leading port operator in India.”

He went on to say that the Public Private Partnership development of the West Container Terminal would bring to bear the synergies, expertise and experience of the Adani Group, the John Keells Group and the Sri Lanka Ports Authority, which would ensure a world class deep-water offering in the Port of Colombo, catering to the largest container ships afloat.

The Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka has asked concerned authorities in Beijing to “investigate” inappropriate advertising of Sri Lanka’s national flag on Amazon.

The reaction came after Colombo raised concerns with Beijing over the sale of Chinese-made doormats featuring the island nation’s flag on the American retail platform and sought an inquiry.

“It is China’s consistent stand that the national flag is a country’s symbol, which must be fully respected. The Embassy is aware of some concern about inappropriate advertising of Sri Lanka flag on Amazon, which has been conveyed to related Chinese authorities for investigation and necessary measures accordingly,” the Chinese embassy said in a statement on Friday.

The Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry had earlier said it had brought the matter to the notice of the Chinese embassy in Colombo and also asked its own mission in Beijing to track down the manufacturer.

“The company which marketed the product on Amazon was requested by letter from the embassy to immediately cease selling the doormats and any such products, misusing the Sri Lanka flag,” the Sri Lankan embassy in China said in a statement on Sunday.

Sri Lanka on Sunday also lodged a formal protest with Amazon asking the retail giant to take down bikinis, briefs and doormats featuring the nation’s lion flag from its site.

Colombo’s embassy in Washington has, meanwhile, complained to the U.S. government over what it called a “violation of Sri Lanka’s intellectual property rights.”

However, a quick search on Amazon on Monday showed many retailers were still selling doormats that had the national flags of not only Sri Lanka but several other countries including China, the U.S. and the UK as a theme, a point also highlighted in the Chinese embassy statement.

“It is also learned that thousands of similar products with flags of various nations, manufactured by sellers from different countries, are available on this global online retailer,” the statement said.

The Government has instructed to implement the orders issued regarding Madrasa schools in the country, says Minister of Education Prof. G. L. Peiris.

Speaking at the press conference held today (15), the Minister stated that there are 1,565 Madrasa schools in Sri Lanka.

However, the ‘Yahapalana’ government did not make any attempt to look into the education process, syllabi, or the lecturers at these institutions or take action to regulate them, he said.

Prof. Peiris responding to a statement of a parliamentarian of the Opposition added that regulating such institutions is in no way illegal.

If these Madrasa schools propagate conflict and hate or operate in a way that is threatening the country’s harmony and peace, the government has not only a right to intervene, but it is also a duty, he said.

Archbishop of Colombo Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith says that the final report of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry into the 2019 Easter Sunday terror attack is incomplete.

The Archbishop expressed these views speaking to the media today (March 15).

I have seen with my own eyes how my people’s bodies had been torn to pieces and strewn across these churches. I do not know if those politicians have seen it.

The Presidential Commission may have investigated as best they could, but it is not a complete document. There are some basic facts here and there, but the authors of these attacks or those who funded it have not been identified. Therefore, we cannot be satisfied with the report of this commission.”

A 33-year-old Sri Lankan woman being detained by immigration authorities in Japan died of emaciation on March 6, after requesting provisional release and expressing a desperate desire for food in notes and letters.

I truly want to eat now,” she wrote in hiragana in a note while under detention at a facility operated by the Immigration Services Agency of Japan’s Nagoya Regional Immigration Bureau.

The facility houses foreigners who have overstayed their visas.

According to a group supporting foreigners, START, the woman became unable to eat and walk due to the extreme stress and deteriorating health she suffered while under custody.

The woman’s health condition was so dire, she brought a bucket to vomit in if needing to do so when START members visited her at the facility, according to the group.

A copy of a document submitted to immigration authorities in December showed that she was requesting provisional release as immigration officials denied her access to medical care.

I want to go to a hospital to receive an intravenous drip, but immigration authorities would not take me,” she said in the document.

In response to the woman’s death, Justice Minister Yoko Kamikawa, who has oversight of the agency, said on March 9 that the ministry is investigating the case.

She reportedly saw doctors at an agency clinic and an outside hospital,” she said. We are trying to confirm the facts, including the cause of her death.”

Half a Million Jobs Lost?-Motor Trade. Is there a way out?

March 14th, 2021

By Garvin Karunaratne

500,000 jobs lost-Local Vehicle Industry(The Island 13/3/21)  sends my mind to many instances in my experience that offer an immediate solution.

Near my home on Old Kesbewa Road  Gangodawila Nugegoda there is  a man making oil filters. He  has been making those since the Sixties  and selling them some where. In the UK  and US where I have happened to have lived for years there are local makers of oil filters. It is very rare for a manufacturer’s oil filter to be obtained from as far as  France for a Peugeot or Germany for a BMW. Instead there are local oil filters, silencers,  radiators and many other car parts.

Once long ago in Bangladesh  in 1983 I decided on a motor trip from Dhaka to Khatmandu in Nepal. It was a four thousand mile trip in an old Toyota Publica and the travelers were my wife and two of my sons. It was a forbidding trip and many told me not to.  We set off and in two hundred miles at Jessore there was a big bang. I got out to find my silencer torn to bits. I was near Jessore where I stayed at the Circuit Bungalow. The next morning I  went to a local garage and waited till they opened the doors.  The owner entrusted the task to a welder. The car was jacked up. Out came the silencer in pieces. The welder made a note of the pieces and took measurements. He brought a sheet of metal and I saw him carefully measuring and cutting it to pieces. He commenced welding and in less than two hours emerged a silencer in looks very close to what was taken out. It was fixed in minutes and in two hours I was on the road with a bang. The beat of the engine was perfect and it was sound even for my full 4000 mile trip and also for another two years use till I sold my car.

Back in Colombo in 1997 when the silencer of my Peugeot 307 packed in it was Pathma Silencers that made a silencer .It took eight hours of stay at the garage and it was not a patch on the two hours work at Jessore.

My next instance travels back to when I was a Deputy Director of Small Industry. Kariyawasam the Member of Parliament for Elpitiya saw me with a strapper lad who brought a number of side mirrors of cars that he had made and wanted an  allocation of foreign exchange  to import mirrors. The side mirrors were of the correct shape and looked good. I sent an inspector to see his factory and report. In a few days time the inspector reported that it was a sham- the youth had no work place and could only produce a bag of tools. It was a firm rejection.. I phoned Kariawasam and gave him a piece of my mind for pulling my leg. No, that youth is not a sham, he is a good worker, he was adamant.. I told him to inform the youth that I will be at Elpitiya the next morning. He informed the youth. I was told to meet him at the Cooperative Society garage. I was there in time and the youth came in with a large heavy  bag full of tools and metal rods. I asked him where he made the side mirrors. He pointed out the garage where lorries were to be parked. He said he has to wait till a lorry comes in to obtain the lorry jack. I understood why my inspector rejected him. The youth did not have a semblance of a  factory. The manner the youth spoke was very convincing. He showed me his tools and he had many of different types and he showed me rods with bolts at each end  and he implored me to wait. We waited. In came a lorry and he borrowed the jack. He sat in a corner and within minutes  assembled the rods to make a jig. He placed the jack at the bottom, put in cut pieces of metal- cut by him in my presence and got them turned into various shapes. I carefully looked at it and some were close –exact replicas that matched the side mirrors of different makes of cars. I gave him a foreign exchange allocation on the spot. I thanked Kariyawasam.

What these three instances tell me is that our salesmen and our motor car sales people should embark on making all parts of cars.

We have to actively get going with industries to make motor spares.

Instead of import licences for importing car spares, the import allocations should be to import metal sheets and welding equipment.

It wont take long for our welders to make car spares.  I have seen many of them  at work in my eighteen years’ ramblings all over the island.

But there is a big but.

In Sri Lanka- the Governments have been hard on the private sector. Once the Government took away all estates over 50 acres and this ruined our plantation agriculture. One of my uncles died because of this take over that deprived his life’s savings- an estate of some 400 acres at Hayes- a loss he could not bear.. The rent laws that restrict rents and also forbid owners to get their rented properties back  forbid building homes. Naturally the rich get used to find avenues overseas to use their wealth.

The answer is simple- waiting for the Private Sector to take charge is wishful thinking. The FDI-Foreign Direct Investment which the IMF holds for us to follow  and which  Minister Cabral, our one and only economic specialist even now believes will happen is never going to be a reality.

The Government has to act  fast like in the NM-Sirimavo days when they created a seperate Ministry under the Prime Minister herself and head hunted the most eminent economist in the island Professor HAdeS Gunasekera and established a new programme to bring about employment to the youth. That was the DDCP- the Divisional Development  Councils Programme.

In Kotmale the Divisional Secretary  created a Paper Making Industry with waste paper collected from the Nuwara Eliya katcheri within months- the equal of which we have yet failed to establish. Since the Eighties the President Jayawardena industry was to collect waste paper and export to India –some 30,000 tons a month to earn a few coppers and to import paper paying for it in dollars.  We have yet failed to  understand the ‘economics’ of selling waste paper and buying paper. We are perhaps the only country that does not use waste paper to make paper. Find a consultant to get that done – give a call to the Ministry of Youth in Bangladesh and ask them to send one of my youths who collect wastepaper and make paper. There are a few of them.  We need to have our heads examined.

Then in Matara as the Government Agent when the Ministry of Plan Implementation was very happy with the Boat yard I established within 3 months and refused to approve any more industries , I took charge and did three months of experiments every night, locked up  at the Rahula College science lab  and unearthed the art of making crayons. The king pin scientist was my Planning Officer a chemistry grad from Colombo, helped by the science teachers. Then Sumanapala Dahanayake the Member of Parliament for Deniyaya in his capacity as the President of the Morawak Korale Coop Union took charge of establishing the factory- he did it working day and night in three weeks. In the third week when we had filled two large rooms of crayons,  Sumanapala and I took off to meet our Minister of  Industries Mr Subasinghe and he was surprised at the quality and he opened sales in the fourth week and Sumanapala developed the industry to have island wide sales. When we were refused a small allocation of forex to import dyes, by the Ministry of Industries we were lost. We then found that the Ministry of Imports was about to import crayons and we moved to Harry Guneratne the Controller of Imports. It did not take long to convince him that by giving us a small allocation of forex to import dyes from the funds earmarked for imports of   crayons,  he can make large saving in forex. This had never been done earlier. Minister Illangaratne was quick to approve it and  ordered the stoppage of all imports of crayons.

Can all this be done within the three more years of our President. The answer is Yes. It is a firm Yes. It can be done. I can speak with authority because I created the Youth Self Employment Programme in Bangladesh within eighteen months and trained the youth officers to carry it on and  thus was born the largest and most successful employment creation programme the world has known- a programme that has guided over three million to be self employed.  within three decades.  The ILO had failed in a similar task at Tangail, Bangladesh which increased my stature in Bangladesh.

I commenced the Youth Self Employment Programme in Bangladesh in April 1982. We did work fast. My  Youth Workers and Deputy Directors of Youth trained by me in economics and methods of guiding youths,  were training guiding some two thousand youths on a day to day basis goading and building up the abilities of youths, the drop out of the education system to establish  enterprises and in some eighteen months the youths built up farms and ventures of their own. Some even came to enter the taxing bracket. Of the  479 youths who commenced their enterprises in the first few months,  55 earned a net income over 1000Tk a month and 144 earned over 500 Tk a month, all achieved within  eighteen months. At that time Tk 500 was the income of a clerical officer in the public service. We were training 2000 youths and now(2021) we train 160,000 a year. By now(2021) this Programme has guided over 3 million youths to be self employed. It is easily the largest and most successful employment creation programme ever.

I met the Hon Minister for Labour and Manpower, Hon Aminul Islam, the third in command of the military junta only twice- the first was the day I had a two hours argument where I had to prove that I could establish the self employment programme in the face of the dismal failure of the ILO attempt to create such a programme,  when he approved my establishing the programme and on the last day I worked in Bangladesh, when I requested him to make an order that the youths on my programme who had earnings sufficient to be taxed   should be given a reprieve not to be taxed for a few years. He kindly agreed.

We have stopped all non food imports. Now through devious methods importers have cashed in. In Cargills I have seen for sale  Lorenz Natural Salted Potatoe Chips all the way from Germany mind you a packet of 500grams at Rs 520. We can easily make potatoes chips and banana chips at less than half that price.. This industry can easily be set up  in a week and we can look forward to three industries making potatoe crisps at Boralanda and two banana crisp factories at Rambukkana and Godakawela. My Divisional Secretary at Rambukkana Sarath Indatissa would have established a banana crisp factory in  two to three days. He would work for 48 hours non stop,  He was that smart and very fast. In those Premier Dudley days we were not authorized to establish new industries. That was also how we established the Crayon Factory at Morawaka when all of us broke rest for three weeks- a 24 hour a day operation. Mind you Sumanapala Dahanayake developed it to have islandwide sales. It was President Jayawardena that ordered the stoppage of all three industries; Paper, Boat Making and Crayon Making to please the IMF  in 1978.

That was not all.  Deputy Commissioner NT Ariyaratne.disclosed to me that President Jayawardena instructed him to proceed to Morawaka and inspect the Crayon Cooperative Factory and  to find something to hang Sumanapala Dahanayake.. Ariyaratne after three days of investigation, including – a forensic audit  had to report that the Cooperative Crayon Factory was in good health and its finances were in proper order. That was the FCID of the Jayawardena  days in action.

Then I also came across in Cargills,  Soyafresh Soya Milk- a litre pack made in Malaysia, sold at Rs. 660. . Kotmale or Ambewela could have easily done this without incurring any foreign exchange, at half this cost..

Our importers have hoodwinked our Government.

We have to get back to the pre 1977 days when all imports have to be vetted and approved only if we cannot make it. I was one of the sleuths that controlled small industry and unless this is done we will continue to waste our hard earned foreign exchange.

We have to open up two major industries a Metal Hardware Industry and a Woodwork Industry, which will make anything in metal or wood, liaise with the Private Sector and make everything that the Private Sector does not make. If there is anything that Sri Lanka cannot make, which the country requires  these two organizations will make or if they cannot make recommend an import. allocation.

These details are provided to prove that we can work fast and we have the ability to tackle the problems of unemployment and poverty if only our President will give the green light for import substitution type of industry to be commenced and set up the infrastructure to guide small industry.

This is nothing new. Once in 1970-1977 we did establish industries and created employment. The SUCCESS achieved in  Paper Making at Kotmale and the Boat Building and Crayon Making in Matara prove to the hilt that it will be a success. There are no FDIs- Foreignb Direct Investors  coming to help us. Creating employment and poverty alleviation  is a task that can be done by us. It is far easier to achieve this than defeating the Monster LTTE. I look forward to the days when the Gotabhaya-Mahinda juggernaut will actually get going in Sri Lanka. To my thinking that day is not far away. Let me live in hope.

What Matters is UN Security Council Where SL Enjoys StrongSupport; UNHRC Resolutions are Useless

March 14th, 2021

Dilrook Kannangara

Sri Lanka’s stand against UNHRC’s intrusive resolution against the island nation on war crimes matters is commendable. The government of President HE Gotabaya Rajapaksa has so far taken a bold stand on the matter forcing the Core Group to revise their resolution again and again trying to appease Sri Lanka. Yet, Sri Lanka must totally reject it not just for own sake but for the sake of other vulnerable UN members. Band together against colonial impositions.

This is excellent strategic thinking. At the heart of this move is the knowledge that it is only the UN Security Council that can make intrusive decisions against a sovereign nation. UN Human Rights Council has no such authority.

Sri Lanka must totally reject the UNHRC resolution and call upon its friends at the UNHRC to do same. This time it is Sri Lanka, the next time it will be them.

The only hope the resolutions against Sri Lanka have is the UN Security Council. But the UN Security Council works differently. Majority vote does not pass resolutions. If any UNSC permanent five members veto it, the resolution fails. They include USA, Russia, China, UK and France. China and Russia have proven many a time that they will not support any intrusive resolution against a target country. Therefore any move to force UNHRC resolutions through the UN Security Council (which is the only way unless Sri Lanka willingly commits hara-kiri by agreeing to UNHRC resolutions), fails.

That comes with it two more victories for Sri Lanka (which are two strategic defeats for the anti-Sri Lanka group). One is that the matter of war crimes dies a permanent death when it fails at the UN Security Council. Thereafter the UNHRC will not be making accusations of war crimes against Sri Lanka. This is the very reason why no one has taken the war crimes matter to the UN Security Council even 12 years after Sri Lanka won the war!

The second victory for Sri Lanka and the second defeat for the anti-Sri Lanka group is that it pushes the island nation further towards China. The world will come to know who the real friends and enemies of Sri Lanka are.

This is a game Sri Lanka is bound to win if the eagle approach is taken and not the ostrich approach. Defy the UNHRC and not give in. It is commendable that the government has truly understood the forces at play and has separated fake authority from real authority.

Knowing this well, the anti-Sri Lanka group tried to convince Sri Lanka in the past that serious compromises at the UNHRC would avoid defeat at the UNHRC vote. This is suicide fearing murder. This was the approach followed by Sri Lanka at the UNHRC in 2009 and 2015 by the agents of the anti-Sri Lanka group. Now their political alignment has become apparent. Why bother winning at the UNHRC! The ultimate battle can only take place at the UN Security Council and the big guns are all on Sri Lanka’s turf.

The ending of this article that was published in the Eurasia Review says it all.

[Quote] The stage is set for voting. And as far as Sri Lanka is unconcerned, it cares little for the consequences backed as it is by China and Russia, both with a veto in the UN Security Council. [Unquote]

All the best Sri Lanka! Never mind losing the petty UNHRC battle, win the war in style. Again.
