Shenali D Waduge
Was US using Ukraine for a bigger goal than to draw Russia into a proxy war? Did US use the Ukraine war to destabilize & weaken EU? Shouldn’t EU leaders & Europeans wake up to this unpalatable reality. While many Europeans are asking why America does not fight its own wars & why European leaders are choosing to fight America’s war at the expense of their own, no one appears to be providing the answers. US did the same to Europe during the War on Terror and Arab Spring. How many non-Europeans... -Full Story-

When it comes to fire hoses and falsehoods, the USA would be tough to beat. Chung and Biden ought to know. US Ambassador Julie Chung was spot on. A few days ago, she pointed out, correctly, that ‘fake news - and fake tweets - are a real problem.’ She urged one and all, ‘don’t be misled.’ This particular tweet, apparently, was a response of sorts to ‘fake tweets mimicking [her] account’ which ‘have been spreading on social media’.  Indeed, I have seen some ‘Julie Chung tweets’ which, at... -Full Story-

Sri Lanka: Aragalaya has a message. Don’t shoot the messengers
By Raj Gonsalkorale
One needs to question whether strengthening of Sinhala Buddhist hegemony has been a consequence of other religious denominations veering more towards orthodoxy and fundamentalism or whether it has been the other way about. There is confusion as to where the Egg is and where the Chicken is. During a meeting in Anuradhapura recently, President Wickremasinghe, deliberately, or inadvertently and/or innocently touched on a core issue that is at the heart of the dissatisfaction people have with the political system and what it has produced over the years. Ananda College established in 1886 played a pivotal role in the Buddhist Revival. It was the hub of Buddhist resistance to the spread of missionary education, denationalization of Buddhist children, and Christian conversion. Sri Lanka: Hope May Be A Firefly But It Has Replaced Darkness Of Last Couple Of Months
Sam Peres Courtesy Outlook
This is in Colombo where I live, and the situation in the interior must be more difficult. However, there is general agreement that the QR system introduced for the distribution of fuel is a success. Life is not perfect in Sri Lanka, but it is definitely better than it was when the "Go Gota Go" protests began in April. The financial crisis continues but the government is better positioned to handle it. Or perhaps people have reconciled themselves to chronic shortages and understand that the economy cannot stabilise overnight. They are  willing to... -Full Story-

Sri Lanka’s former president Gotabaya Rajapaksa may return home in about two weeks after fleeing a popular uprising in July, two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters on Tuesday, depending in part on arrangements to secure his safety. One of the sources said his return was partly linked to the costs of his stay in Thailand. Rajapaksa fled Sri Lanka in the early hours of July 13 after massive protests engulfed Colombo and demonstrators angry with the country’s economic devastation stormed his official residence and office. Sri Lanka’s 2023 budget would aim to reduce the fiscal deficit to 6.8 per cent in 2023 from the projected 9.9 per cent in 2022, a senior Cabinet Minister said on Tuesday, ahead of the visit by the IMF delegation for a bailout package to the crisis-hit island nation. A nationwide experiment is abandoned after producing only misery.
Faced with a deepening economic and humanitarian crisis, Sri Lanka called off an ill-conceived national experiment in organic agriculture this winter. Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa promised in his 2019 election campaign to transition the country’s farmers to organic agriculture over a period of 10 years. Last April, Rajapaksa’s government made good on that promise, imposing a nationwide ban on the importation and use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides... -Full Story-

It is said that freedom is never given but grabbed. Grabbing was possible in many parts of Asia because the Japanese had given hell for leather to the Imperial Western colonial countries occupying a vast swathe of Asian territory before 1939. In his address to the Advocata Institute in Colombo, earlier this month, President Ranil Wickremesinghe said:“I think we need to seriously consider getting a report on using nuclear energy in Sri Lanka.”In the current context of national penury, any plan to go for nuclear energy will seem far-fetched, even impossible. But considering the expansion of Sri Lanka’s energy needs in the years to come, and also considering the need to meet the challenges posed by climate change, working on the nuclear energy option is worth ‘serious’ consideration, as the President put it.  ... -Full Story-

CLIMACTERIC OF GOVERNMENT ENTERPRISES MANAGEMENT IN SRI LANKA
BY EDWARD THEOPHILUS
Public sector investments from 1956 to 1977 had a tremendous growth, the major reason for the increasing trend was the political pressure towards the elected governments from public and trade unions while restrictions for private investment have been decreed by the government. Investment role and ownership patterns have been misinterpreted by Marxist political parties stressing more government investments in the country. After 1956, the government nationalized several private investments emphasising and giving a public feeling that the role of investment was the job of the government.   Left political parties and associated trade... -Full Story-

Should Sri Lanka privatize Central Bank & Institute of Policy Studies too?
Shenali D Waduge
There are some people who sit on cushy taxpayer paid platforms & promote privatization while others also mandated to function as a government body accepts foreign funds compromising their ‘advice’ to the state. If entities are not working for the state, do the tax payers require to pay for them? Are these entities not better off being privatized first? In the name of development Sri Lanka has seen enormous changes. How far development was not planned considering the environment is seen by many environment-related catastrophes across the island. The geopolitical position of Sri Lanka impacts every issue Sri Lanka faces be it local or international. The efforts to control Sri Lanka by any other means & the modus operandi used has to be considered by the government – policy advisors especially the general public. There are other opportunists riding the wave of discontentment, who should wear the hat of a Pariah before Gotabhaya. Gotabhaya Rajapaksa made mistakes as the President of the country, and grave ones at that too. Some of his decisions were ill timed and ill informed. I read content in many publications that Sri Lanka has an economic crisis (2022) that is unimaginable to the government’s economic advisors what should do to get out of the problem. If the government economic advisors knew about this situation before 2022, why didn’t they educate the policymaking process of the country?   Sri Lanka had various economic plans and the most successful plan that contained the best policies was the Six Years Program of Investments (1954-1960) by the Planning Secretariat of the government of Mr Sir John Katalawela. It was probably two decades back, when a group of journalists and Guwahati-based patriots marched on a street of Guwahati to celebrate the Independence Day. By P.K.Balachandran Courtesy NewsIn.Asia
Colombo, August 10 (Counterpoint): The current disturbance in India-Sri Lanka relations caused by the proposed docking of the sophisticated Chinese military survey vessel Yuan Wang 5 at Hambantota port is but the latest in a long series of hiccups in Indo-Lankan strategic relations. The relationship has been seeing ups and downs since the two countries became independent in the 1940s. A factor characterizing the relationship is the difference in the strategic vision of the two countries. India has consistently believed that Sri Lanka is vital for its security in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR),... -Full Story-

All About Climate Change: Heat, Temperature and Humidity Levels
Deye.com
Even though many people think about rising temperatures and extreme heat when we talk about climate change, the reality is that climate change involves much more than that. Researchers have argued that temperature on its own is not the most effective way to measure climate change. They suggest that the energy produced by extreme weather is linked to the amount of water in the air, which subsequently affects comfort. This means that our attempts to define climate change and deal with its effects should not just be concentrated on high temperatures and air-conditioning but... -Full Story-

The system of Sri Lanka has three institutions a legislature, the executive and the judiciary, the major criticism about the three institutions is they are subject to corruption and they are not functioning for the needs of... -Full Story-

But there were criticisms as to how the darling JVP was treated. In 1971, Senator S Nadesan drew attention to the Emergency Regulations enacted at the time, particularly Regulations 19 and 20 which dealt with arrest, detention, cremation and burial. These Regulations say that any police officer may arrest without a warrant a person suspected of an offence under the Emergency Regulations.  The earlier safeguards that such a person must be produced before a magistrate within 24 hours and also that police must report to magistrate if they arrest a person without a warrant were removed.... -Full Story-

The two JVP insurgencies of 1971 and 1987 have not been looked at analytically. Commentators have focused on describing what the JVP did, not why they did it.  Commentators treat the JVP with great indulgence, calling the JVP an idealistic, romantic youth movement, which arose spontaneously.  It was nothing of the sort. It was an externally influenced movement intended to destabilize and break up the state. Analysts now trace JVP beginnings to the 1960s at the University of Ceylon, Peradeniya, where agitation started in the mid 1960s.   I was in the University at this... -Full Story-

Although the macroeconomy is a broader area like a jungle as stated by R.G.D.Allen in his famous title Macroeconomics, many countries have developed their macroeconomic framework,   considering the vital structural factors of the framework, people have no understanding of this framework and there is a question of whether the policymakers have a clear understanding of the macroeconomic framework.
